Total Classics 1984

By Jim825 & dennisjames71

The best teams of the 1984 baseball season had previously posed little threat of contention. The San Diego Padres, who closed the year as National League West winners, had just one winning season in their 15-year existence.

Neither the Cubs nor Mets, who duked it out in the National League East, had challenged for the pennant in over a decade. And the Tigers, who became 1984 World Series Champions, hadn't been to the playoffs since 1972.

The Tigers were the premier team of 1984, going 104-58. Their pitching was solid, with Jack Morris, Dan Petry, and Milt Wilcox all winning at least 17 games. Reliever Willie Hernandez won both the Cy Young and MVP Awards, posting 32 saves in his first 32 opportunities.

The Detroit offense, powered by Kirk Gibson, Lance Parrish, Alan Trammell, and Chet Lemon, led the league in homers and runs scored. Their up-the-middle defense, with Parrish, Trammell, Lemon, and Lou Whitaker, was the best in baseball. With this attack, the Tigers opened the season 35-5, easily capturing the division.

In the West, Kansas City edged out the Angels and Twins, despite winning only 84 games. The Royals' only standout player was Dan Quisenberry, who notched 44 saves.

The 1984 World Series was a formality, as Detroit rolled through the Padres' starting pitching and won the 1984 World Series four games to one. To show how dominant Detroit was in 1984, check out this stat: Including the postseason, the Tigers were 100-0 when leading after eight innings.

I want everyone to know that these two guys are geniuses in what they create and bring to this website. Consider looking at it like this in that you are in fact getting a brand new game as part of your Mvp collection for free just for being a member here. And all that you should do in return is give this mod a rating and say two little words that many people in here still would not say even if a gun was pointed at their head and that is thank you.

Each modder in here should be thanked for what they do but that is sadly not the case.

So thank you Jim825 and DennisJames71 for making this great game even better. And thank you to the rest of the modders who contributed to this mod. You are appreciated and valued.

I haven't had a chance to install this mod yet but I don't need to play it to know that it will be amazing. The Total Classics crew of Jim825 and DennisJames71 always deliver with outstanding work. I look forward to playing the 1984 season.

Incredible - my favorite Cubs team of all time gentlemen! Can't express how appreciative I am of this mod!

Go check out the game I played starting with this post. It was a wild game at windy Wrigley and I also used the Montreal Expos, who also had a solid team that year.

Great write-up Y4L, and I couldn't agree more with your thoughts. Firing this mod up took me back to that year. I spent that summer glued to the TV watching the Cubs, unless I was at Wrigley doing the same thing. Couple that with the fact that the Cubs ran onto the field with Jump, from VanHalen, and that is on the soundtrack - just an awesome, awesome mod!

I don't like it, my Padres were beaten that year-thanks for the reminder. Just kidding, of course, once again you guys have amazed us with the incredible authenticity of this effort. Great work.

Play a game in Wrigley with the wind blowing out. You'll go nuts. And remember, in 1984 there were NO NIGHT GAMES! Thank God for that.

What a comeback those guys had in the playoffs. I was at Pearl Harbor at the time and I thought some Cub fans were going to jump in the Pacific. Fortunately no one did. :)

LOL-yes they did. Steve Garvey had a great playoff, but only hit .200 in the WS. And 20 years later Cubs fans wanted to throw Steve Bartman in the Pacific.

To this day I still have a burning hatred for Steve Garvey -

And there are some people today who still wouldn't mind seeing that happen.

Great work guys. I started a Reds dynasty and was surprised by how few of those players I could remember. The game played well, everything looked great, and the only small problem was Dave Parker's face was some white dude. Do you happen to know what Parker's cyberface number should be?

Thanks for pointing this problem out. I made a separate thread with the corrected Dave Parker cyberface in place.

Jim (and Team classics), congratulations on this mod! I wonder how many will start a 35-5 record for the Tigers? If not they had the team to make up for a mediocre start (BTW those Blue Jays were also pretty decent that year - few remember this).

Cubs fans will enjoy this Mod as well!

Great Mod! Only played one game so far but noticed a few mistakes. Randy Johnson is playing 3b for the Braves and Joel Youngblood of the Giants is announced as Joe Biemel.

Thanks for this!!

For all of us that were following baseball during the 80's this is the coolest thing that I have ever seen! Awesome work by everyone involved and it brings back so many memories. Can't thank everyone enough for making this game STILL the best that is out there. I have said it before many times that this site is the most tightly knit group of baseball fans that I have ever been a part of. Everyone here makes a game that came out in 2005 feel so new everyday. No other game beats this one, and the modders just blow the current games away! I hope you guys know how much we appreciate all of your work and the joy that you bring to all of us.

God bless MVPMODS!!

3 MONTHS THIS HAS BEEN OUT FOR THREE MONTHS AND NO ONE TOLD ME!!!! you all fail, repeat this grade next year.

Jim, Thank you so much for this, when you told me you were working on this a couple years ago but to keep it under my hat, I was jittery with excitement. Right now, well, I'm emotionally erect.

Dennis, Im certain with your hand in, this mod will be beyond definition. So happy to see your name on it.

and as Y4K says, to all the modders here, thank you for keeping it alive.
