Lual
Game 2: Home vs Washington Nationals Mets Swat Nats! (Above: The Mets hussled and worked for every hit and extra base they could, to try and come out of their slump) The Mets turned things around, with an impressive display, as they saw off the Nationals in game 2 of their series, leaving the Shea faithful happy as they headed home on a warm night in New York. Things seemed to be going smoothly for the Mets, as they took a 4-0 lead into the 9th, on the back of 2 RBIs from pitcher Benson (Sac Fly & Walk). Looper should of had an easy inning ahead of him, thats until Johnson jacked in a 2 run homer with 0 outs, followed by Wilkerson driving in another run, leaving him on 2nd, with 2 outs. Thankfully he kept his composure forcing a pop up to get the final out, ensuring the Mets came out of their 5 game losing slump, to move to 8-10 for the year. Lual
Game 3: Home vs Washington Nationals Mets Shut Out Nats! (Above: Victor Zambrano clings on to a drive down his throat, & Right: DeJean celebrates as he clinches the save with a 1-2-3 inning) The Mets moved to 9-10, 3.5GB in the NL East, as they took Game 3 vs the Nationals, clinching the series win to turn Mets spirits around. Pitching proved to be decisive for the Mets today, as 4 pitchers held the Nationals to 3 hits and shut them out. Though things did look rough, as Zambrano drilled the ball at his own ankle, whilst hitting in the 4th inning. He was carried from the field, though he was cleared to return to action straight away. Floyd found his form today, drilling in both the Nationals runs, thanks to Reyes getting on base ahead of him in the order. 8 hits in total for the Mets, in a all-round good day. Lual
Upcoming Series - 3 Games at Home vs Atlanta Game 1: Home vs Atlanta Braves Mets Beat Battling Braves! (Above: Hernandez racks up a strikeout, as he keeps the Braves at bay, and Right: Hernandez celebrates his win, with Piazza) Atlanta battled bravely in their attempt to thwart the Mets, but fell in the 10th inning, after coming back from 4-1 down in the 3rd inning. The Mets appeared to be crusing to a 3rd straight win, until LaRoche came up with 2 homers, once in the 4th and then to tie it in the 6th, as the Mets appeared to have lost their bottle at a clutch time. Fortunately the pitching held firm, notably Hernandez who came into wrap up the 9th, and then shut down the Braves big hitters in the 10th. With just 1 run needed to win the match, the Mets piled on the pressure. They loaded the bases in the 10th, with 1 out, giving David Wright the chance to win it. He managed to hit a liner down the 1st baseline, which was ruled an error, after LaRoche mis gloved the ball, allowing Castro to reach home, to earn the Mets a 5-4 win. With 4 games left in the month, the Mets are .500, 10-10, 3GB of the NL East leading Phillies. Lual
Game 2: Home vs Atlanta Braves Waste Of Money! (Above: Beltran steals another bag, 4 in the game, 14 in the season, & Right: Floyd looks on, as the Mets crumble.) Thats what the Mets fans are starting to feel about their new ace Pedro Martinez. On the mound for his 5th start of the year, Pedro soon collapsed giving up a 2 out, homer to Chipper Jones in the 1st inning. Pedro eventually gave up 10 hits in 6 innings, as he allowed 5 runs, as the Mets slumped at home against the Braves. Beltran added to his reputation as a Steal Master, racking up 4 steals, as he put himself in position to nab the 2 consolation runs for the Mets. Wright also shone, going 2/4, as the Mets again struggled offensively, managing just 4 hits. Atlanta, added 2 late runs to seal a 7-2 win, on the back of 15 hits, leaving the fans bewildered with the performance of Ace Pitcher, Martinez. (Above: Mientkiewicz cant grab Piazzas wild throw, allowing the Braves to score, and Right: Glavine makes a play on the mound, in his complete game loss.) Game 3 of the series began and ended in the 1st inning, as Piazzas wild throw to first, allowed Jones to score, and set the tone for some lacklustre fielding, and weak hitting for the Mets. The Mets failed to take advantage of 4 errors from the Braves, and ended the game scoreless, in response to the Braves 2 runs. The 2nd was driven in off a triple by Estrada. Glavine managed to go the distance, and looked controlled on the mound, giving up 8 hits, in a game where the defence and offence both failed him. The Mets are now 10-12 for the month, and have just 2 games left against the Nationals, before April is in the books. Lual
Upcoming Series - 3 Games @ Washington Nationals Game 1: @ Washington Nationals Mets Survive Late Rally! (Above: Benson pitched a gem, lasting 8 innings, giving up just 3 hits & Right: Celebrations for the Mets, as they snap a 2 game losing streak.) After losing games 2 & 3 against the Braves, the Mets came into the Nationals series with a point to prove, and needing to win the first 2 games, to end the month 12-12. Game 1, did go the Mets way, as they put 3 runs on the board, going into the 9th. Benson had pitched 8 solid innings, but gave up 2 hits in the 9th, and allowed a run, to ruin his shut out. The Mets called on Roberts to finish things up, but he soon collapsed giving up 3 hits and loading the bases. Run 2 soon came home for the Nationals, and with the bases loaded, the Mets stared defeat head on. Fortunately, Roberts managed to turn 2 outs, to save the game, giving the Mets are hard earned win in Washington. Lual
Game 2: @ Washington Nationals Almost, Barely! (Above: Cairo bangs in 2 runs, and Right: Cameron makes the catch to get the final out in the 10th.) Game 2 was a stunning display of class, followed by ineptitude, followed by victory.... The Nationals did take a lead in the 1st, but the Mets went crazy in the 2nd, racking up 7 runs, blitzing Zach Day, who was pulled with just 1 out in the 2nd inning. Then the Mets went into freefall, well in the 9th inning... 7-1 up the game in the bag, the Nationals scored 2 runs with 0 outs, then Hernandez got his game together, and put 2 outs on the board. Ishii came in to get the final out, but he allowed 2 men on base, before giving up a run leaving things 7-4, with 2 men on. JOHNSON, BANG, 3 run shot, the Nationals tie it, with 2 outs in the 9th. Momentum had gone fully with the Nationals, as the game eventually headed to extra innings 7-7. The Mets luckily got Reyes and Beltran on, before Floyd drove home Reyes, giving the Mets an 8-7 lead to defend. This time Looper came in, and moped things up, with a nice 1-2-3 inning, something that should of happened in the 9th. April is now in the books, the Mets are 12-12, and nicely set for a real push through to the All-Star Break. (Above: Floyd cracks a double, that empties the bases, scoring 3 runs, and Right: Sweeping Feels Good!.) Sweep up. The Mets rolled to their 3rd straight win in the Capital, by racing into a 5 run lead within 2 innings, as the Nationals feel by the wayside. Cliff Floyd was the main instigator, as he put 4 RBIs on the board, including 3 off a Double in the 2nd. Trachsel pitched a solid game, going 7 innings giving up just 1 run. Before the Pen closed things down, allowing just 1 more run, as the Mets wrapped the series up with a 5-2 win, on the back of 6 hits. (Above: Mientkiewicz makes a tight play at 1st, and Right: Floyd ready to smack home the Mets only score.) The Phillies rolled into town, and took the Mets apart, as once again, Pedro Martinez collapsed at the mound, leaving him 0-5 in his 6 starts this season. Not good enough for a man earning over $13 million per year. Thome juiced a 3 run shot, as the Phillies steamed ahead 6-0 by the 3rd inning. Floyd then gave the Mets a glimmer of hope with a solo effort in the 4th. But Rollins soon added another run to the Phillies total, as they clinched an impressive 7-1 win, outhitting the Mets 15-7 on the night. Lual
Game 2: Home vs Philadelphia Phillies Extra Innings Prove Costly! (Above: Reyes was involved in 2 key plays, as he failed to grab a errant throw to 2nd, allowing the Phillies to take the decisive lead, and Right: He just fails to tie the game at home, as Lieberthal makes a big play.) The Mets slipped to their 4th defeat of the year against the Phillies, as they blew 2 leads, to eventually lose in the 10th inning, on the back of an error at 2nd. Cairo had given the Mets a good start, driving a double up the middle to set the Mets up 1-0. Then after Thome had tied it with a solo shot, Glavine pushed a sac bunt down the line, as he looked to have given the Mets the win in the 8th. Glavine, who pitched all 10 innings, failed to win the game, and come the 10th inning, he could only watch the comedy, as the Mets bungled a double play allowing the Phillies to score the decisive run. Reyes involved in that play, then had a chance to tie it at home, but failed to slide around Lieberthal, as the Mets missed the chance to end their losing streak against the Phillies. Lual
Game 3: Home vs Philadelphia Phillies Thrown Away! (Above: Cameron steals 2 bags early, as he crosses home to help the Mets go ahead early, and Right: Almonte makes a wild throw which evades the player at first, allowing the Phillies to take the lead.) Thrown Away in more ways than 1 for the Mets tonight, as they first blow a 5-1 lead in the 7th, then Almonte makes a wild throw to first, trying to get the final out in the 9th, but he was off target, allowing the Phillies to take a 6-5 lead. It started well for the Mets as Cameron stole 2 bags, as he crossed home, thanks to a Beltran single. Floyd then put 2 more runs on the board, as he singled to right, giving the Mets a 3-0 in the 3rd inning. The Mets had increased their lead to 5-1 by the 7th, but this was soon all to change. First the Phillies pulled things tight, thanks to a 3 run shot, by Michaels. Then in the 8th, DeJean came in to tide things over, but gave up the game tying run, thanks to a solo from Phillie Pitcher Lidle. Almonte's error allowed the Phillies to go 6-5 up, then Lofton drove in an insurance run, as the Mets couldnt get things going with their final 3 outs, and slumped to 3 straight in the series against the Phillies. Lual
Game 4: Home vs Philadelphia Phillies Sh'e'ameful! (Above: Reyes blasts into the catcher, but is called out as Lieberthal holds onto the ball, and Right: Reyes drops a simple catch, as the Phillies add another run.) 4 home games against the Phillies, you would of thought the Mets could at least take 1, if not split the series. Alas, the visitors wrapped up a 4 game sweep 5-1, as the Mets failed to take advantage of men in scoring position on numerous occasions. Beltran had singled to drive home Reyes, in the 3rd, to pull things back to 2-1, but Chase Utley cracked a 2 run shot in the 4th, to give the Phillies a 3 run cushion. Abreu then added another run, with his long double up the centre, in the 5th. The Mets did rack up 10 hits in the game, but just couldnt get men home, even if Reyes last ditch railroading of the catcher, proved their ambition. A 13-16 record is not what Mets fans had hoped for, as they now face, the Brewers, Cubs and Cards from the NL Central. Lual
Upcoming Series - 3 Games @ Milwaukee Game 1: @ Milwaukee Brewers Mets Blow Lead...Again! (Above: Mientkiewicz busts to get his 2nd Double of the game, and Right: Looper unhappy after he walks in the winning run.) The Mets rolled into Milwaukee needing a change in fortune after the 4 losses at home to the Phillies. Things started badly for the Mets, as Reyes dived in too steal 2nd, but collided with a knee, ending his day, as he left the field with concussion. After this, the Mets seemed to rally and piled on the pressure, especially Mientkiewicz who slammed 2 Doubles, and drove in 2 runs, as the Mets raced into a 4-1 lead. Trachsel left the mound, leaving Heredia to clean up the 8th inning. Unfortunately for him, he loaded the bases, and gave up the 3 runs to tie the match, leaving the Mets despondant. It only got worse for the Mets, as the game went into extra innings, Looper loaded the bases, and embarassingly walked in the winning run, leaving the Mets sour in defeat. Lual
Game 2: @ Milwaukee Brewers Rubbish! (Above: Floyd drives in 2 early runs, giving the Mets some hope, Right: Pedro is happy, as he sees the runs come home, his day would end in defeat again.) Woeful, one word sums up both the Mets who have now lost 6 straight, and their supposed Ace Pitcher, Pedro Martinez. He has now lost 6 of 7 starts, and is one of the biggest flops in baseball free agency history, after his big money move from the Red Sox. The Mets had given Pedro a nice base, taking a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning. And this seemed to inspire Pedro, as he chalked up the Brewers going into the 5th. Then, 2 home runs, and 6 hits later, the Mets had slumped to a 5-2 defecit, ensuring Pedro would leave the field without a win, yet again. One plus point for the Mets, is Beltrans presence on the bases, he stole his 22nd base on the year, and is a real threat, as soon as he gets on board. Nothing though, could mask the Mets disappointment with Pedro. Moves maybe made, to dump his salary, and rebuild the struggling club as early as May.
