Lual
Game 2: Home vs San Francisco Giants Feels Good! (Above: Crawford hits his 1st homer in a Mets jersey, Right: Would you believe it? Pedro has won again.) The Mets appear to have a new hero in town, the name Carl Crawford. Crawford stepped up to the plate in the 8th, with the game tied at 1-1, only to hit a 3run jack to give the Mets (and Pedro) a very important win, in game 2 versus the Giants. Pedro had pitched well all game, and infact went the whole 9 innings, giving up just 1 run and 7 hits, in a Pedro'esque' performance. But the headline stealer, was Crawford with his first homer in a Mets jersey. Beltran had tied things up for the Mets, as both sides put a run on the board in the 4th. And the game appeared to be heading for extra innings, until Crawford stepped up with his game winning shot. Shea Stadium will now hold its breath in expectation of a rare sweep for the Mets this season. Lual
Game 3: Home vs San Francisco Giants Sweeping Aint Easy! (Above: Reyes' late double eventually leads to him coming home for the winning run, Right: All about the sweep in the Apple.) Sweeping aint easy, but if feels good. At last the Mets could taste the sweet side of victory, as they cleaned up the series with San Francisco, by pinching the game in the 9th. The Mets relied on solid pitching from Glavine to keep them in the game, and come the 9th inning, the tight defence proved to be the key for the Mets. Reyes managed to get on base in the 9th with a long double to left. He then made a move to steal 3rd, the Giants catcher attempted to throw him out, but overthrew the ball. Reyes came bursting round third, to cross home for the win in an unlikely ending to the game. Neither side really played that well, Bonds was walked 4 times by Glavine, as the Mets edged on the cautious side. Fortunato, fortunately pitched a clean 9th, allowing him to get the win on the back of Reyes speed. The Sweep is in the bag, next up, Houston come to town as the Mets will hope to take their streak to 4 straight.... Lual
Upcoming Series - 3 Games Home vs Houston Game 1: Home vs Houston Astros Houston, We have a problem.....! (Above: Crawford goes long for his 2nd jack in 6 Mets games, Right: Huff and Puff, the Mets tried hard but came up short.) Call out for help all you want, the Astros wont hear you. Clemens and Co came to New York on a mission, and they made sure this one was a success. 2 Blasts accounted for 5 of the Astros runs, as they rocketed ahead, 8-0 over their hosts. Couple this with Clemens gunning hitters down at will, and you had the perfect game for the Astros to win. Crawford did manage to add to his homerun tally in a Mets jersey, by going yard in the 7th, but this did not hamper Houston, as they cruised to a comfortable win 8-1, ending the Mets 3 game winning streak. The Mets will hope they can bring Houston back to earth tomorrow night, to get back on track in this series. Lual
Game 2: Home vs Houston Astros Houston, You have a problem.....! (Above: Zambrano pitches and wins! Right: Piazzas 2 run shot gave the Mets the insurance runs needed.) Victor Zambrano had a long time to wait for this moment, but at last he managed to pitch for a win this year for the Mets. He actually pitch a solid 7 innings, giving up just 5 hits and shutting the Astros offence down. Adding to Victors solid performance, was a decent hitting game. Piazza hit a 2 run shot to add to runs driven in by Cameron and Mientkiewicz. The Mets actually took a 4-0 lead into the 8th inning. Things did get a bit hairy for the Mets, as Hernandez gave up a homer in the 8th, then Looper gave up a run, and left 2 men on base, before he finally finished off the game. The series will be decided tomorrow night, as the Mets hope to improve to 5-3 in the month of June. Lual
Game 3: Home vs Houston Astros Houston, BAH.....! (Above: Beltran robs a homer, its not enough for the Mets, Right: Trachsel gets hit on the knee, but is unhurt.) Houston finish off with a bang, as the Mets blow up mainly in part to the awful 9th inning pitched by Heredia, who gave up 8 hits and 6 runs, allowing the Astros to kill the game off. Before that, it was pretty tight, infact the Mets had led from the 4th inning, until the 7th, thanks to Mientkiewicz driving Beltran home on a Sac Fly. Trachsel had pitched well until the 7th, then he gave up the tying homer, then in the 8th he gave up 2 more runs as the Mets lead evapourated and dried into defeat. Heredias dismal showing capped off the day, as he showed nothing on the mound and ended up embarrasing himself and the team, as the Astros ended the game with a Ensberg Grand Slam to seal the 9-1 win, and the series. The Mets now head into Inter League play, with 3 games at home to the Angels, before a 12 game road trip. Lual
Upcoming Series - 3 Games Home vs Anaheim Game 1: Home vs Anaheim Angels Unlucky 13! (Above: Piazza and Right: Beltran, both hit solo home runs, in mere consolation for the beaten Mets.) The Angels turned up at Shea for their Inter League series, and showed the Mets why they are one of the best in the American League. Martinez gave up 6 runs in the 1st inning, including a 3 run shot by Vlad, as he collapsed under the weight of the Angels offence. Nothing the Mets did could stop the rot, as the Angels put another 7 runs on the board to crush the beaten Mets. Consolation came in the form of 2 solo homers, 1 each for Beltran and Piazza, but these couldnt paper over the cracks after a humiliating loss. Cairo also had a notable performance for the Mets, as he managed to generate 3 errors when fielding, leaving the Mets fans wishing Matsui wasnt injured. Games 2 and 3 should be fun....... Lual
Game 2: Home vs Anaheim Angels Dirty Dozen! (Above: A late rally couldnt turn things around for the Mets, as Reyes and Right: Cameron tried hard to generate the runs.) Game 2, and another double digit scoreline for the Angels, as they once again turn on the style, racking up 11 runs without reply within 6 innings. This time though, the Mets refused to give up, and outscored their guests 7-1 in the last 3 innings, as the unlikely comeback nearly became reality. Pitching is the flaw in the Mets armoury at the moment, Glavine lasted just 5 innings, and gave up a 3 run shot to the monster Vlad in the 1st inning. The Mets rally will give the fans some hope for the future, as the Angels used 4 pitchers to try and thwart any comeback attempt. Eventually Rodriguez stopped the Mets, but it gave the unhappy Shea something to cheer for. Can the Mets prevent an ugly sweep, or will this homestand end with yet another loss? Lual
Game 3: Home vs Anaheim Angels 13, 12 & Now 15! (Above: Piazza cant prevent the game winning run at home, Right: The bench are less than impressed.) After 2 offensive displays from the Angels, the Mets were able to shut things down and force the final game of the series into extra innings. In the 15th inning, it was the Angels who came up big, as they drove in the eventual game winning run, just avoiding the tag at home as Piazza missed a big play. The Mets then failed to tie things, as Crawford got to 3rd with no outs. Alas 3 batters later, and the Mets where walking off the field on the back of a 4th straight loss. Things really need to improve drastically now for the New Yorkers, a 12 game road trip must bear at least .500 baseball. Anything less, and it could prove fatal for the struggling Mets team. Lual
Upcoming Series - 3 Games @ Oakland Game 1: @ Oakland A's Mets Downed! (Above: Cameron drives the Mets ahead, Right: Piazza cant believe the Mets have lost.) Comebacks generally yield success, the Mets somehow cameback just to fail. Going 4-0 down in the 1st, the Mets seemed out of it and heading to their 5th straight loss. Then the Mets bats came to life. 7 Runs in 3 innings, put the Mets in control going into the 8th inning. Leading 7-5, and needing just 6 outs to win the game the Mets somehow conspire to shoot themselves in the foot. Hernandez came into see them through the 8th, but ended up loading the bases on 3 hits, and then to top things off, Nick Swisher went yard to send the A's fans wild, with a Grand Slam to put them 9-7 ahead. The Mets couldnt get things moving in the 9th, and slumped to a devastating loss after a huge effort to comeback into the game. The Play Offs are a distant hope now for this organisation, the Mets are looking at a bleak future. Lual
Game 2: @ Oakland A's Slammed! (Above: Crawford Triples to drive in the Mets only run, Right: 6 Straight, its a dirty habit.) The A's win their 2nd game straight against the Mets, thanks to another Grand Slam. This time Chavez cracked the A's winning runs, as the Mets continue to head down the pan, in a season they would rather flush away. Crawford tried to keep the Mets afloat, as he tripled to drive in Reyes. But the Mets pitching soon stepped into normal mode. Trachsel first gave up the Grand Slam. Then Heredia in as relief, let the A's put a 5th on the board. There was to be no comeback by the Mets, although 7 hits did arrive in the last 3 innings, no-one threatened home plate. 1 game away from 2 straight sweeps. The Mets forget how to celebrate!.) Crawford went nap, as he drove in 5 runs to march the Mets to victory in the rubber match against the A's in Oakland. Things looked bleak once again for the Mets, as they trailed 5-0 going into the 6th. Then Crawford started the comeback hitting a 3 run homer to right into the 2nd deck. Crawford then tied the game in the 8th, as he doubled to drive in 2 runs, eventually sending the match into extra innings. This time the Mets prevailed, on the back of an error and a Piazza RBI, as they took a 7-5 lead giving Looper something to defend for 3 outs. Looper gave up 1 hit, as he managed to save the lead for the Mets, giving Pedro his 3rd win of the year. Crawford stated after the game "Its a big day for us all, i came here to be part of the Mets push for the Play Offs, its about time we actually did something about it" The Mets now fly out to Seattle to try and continue their upturn in form. Lual
Upcoming Series - 3 Games @ Seattle Game 1: @ Seattle Mariners Familiar Story! (Above: Cairo gets on base, to eventually score. Right: Reyes turns a DP, although Ichiro slides hard at 2nd.) Seattle came out on top in the clash of 2 of the weaker sides in the MLB today. Both teams are over 10GB in their respective division, and both seem to be entering a rebuilding stage. The Mets do appear to have a never say die spirit at the moment, but their failure to stop runs against, is costing them. The Mariners hit 4 homers, as they strolled into a 5-0 lead early on. The Mets then rallied in the 8th, as Reyes drove in 2, then Cameron added another run to the tally, as the Mets clawed to within 2 runs of the hosts. The Mariners killed the game off with another run in the 8th, and then Guaradado pitched a clean 9th, to end the Mets hopes, and send them back into a losing spiral.
