i know i asked this question a while back, but now i need a diffrent soultion. i'm running down to my last gig of hard drive space, and can't buy another hard drive anytime soon, so does anyone know of a way to put my defaults outside of hard drives?

don't suggest cd burning, i tried it 5 times, all struck out.

don't worry, i think i have enough space to compensate for now, but i'm worried about later on....i may get another hard drive by then though.

another idea that i do. assuming you have a boatload of mods. delete all the opened mod files. meaning keep only the mod files that are zipped. do that for all your other files too, you'll free up a ton of space that way. anytime you download something unzip it, install it and make sure it works then delete the unzipped file. if something goes wrong later on and you have to reinstall something, unzip- install- delete unzipped file.

in other words- by keeping the zipped AND unzipped files on your hard drive(s) your using up TWICE the necessary space. add to that all the other programs/files you normally download, it adds up over time. i'm real anal about my hard drive so 80 gigs has lasted me forever, and i think i still have over 60% free space on it. if i install a program i don't use, it's gone in a few weeks. little things like that can free up a lot of space really quick.

i dumped the zipped files....mabye i should have deleted the unzipped files. i did some desktop cleaning, but i'm still down to my last gig of space and will have to buy a new hard drive sometime soon. but this will help out until then. thanks!!

just make some new folders- let's call one of them MVPmods and defaults, now just drag and drop all those opened folders into that new one. once you have them all in there just zip it up. to take it a step further you can zip each folder within the new one. then just delete the unzipped ones. also if you have a bunch of movies on your hard drive, save them to a disc(s) and delete them. they will eat up a hard drive real fast.

yes, i have a bunch of movies....and yes i tried moving them on a disc, but the files are so big i can't zap them off. besides, i was thinking about this anyway. i think i can manage for now with what i have until i can buy a new hard drive.

ouch yeah 20 gigs is a tad small. i would probably have to recommend at least a 60 to last you a good while. i always use seagate drives. personal preference i know, but i have always had really good luck with them. being on a student budget i know the feeling of being low on $$$ but here is some pricing info on some drives for reference:

it wasn't when i had my comupter built about three years ago. 20 gigs was pretty good. this time, i'm avoiding maxtor drives, they crash on you really fast.

i don't have too much money, so i'll see what i can do.
