Game 3: Cincinnati Reds (55-74) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (56-74)

Pirates Back On Top!

game132.jpg

Above: Blackley cant continue his early inning dominance, Right: Encarnacion steps up again, but it proves fruitless!

The Pirates take game 3 of the series with a 7-4 win, as the Reds pitching couldnt contain the Bucs' hitters, giving up 14 hits and allowing 7 runs.

Infact, the Reds also racked up 14 hits, but could only muster 4 runs as they left the bases loaded in 3 seperate innings. This lack of production with men in scoring position is a prime example of why the Reds are well below .500 this season.

Blackley had started well on the mound, but after 3 shutout innings, he gave up a 3 run jack to Bay, and then saw both the Wilsons drive in runs.

In contrast Oliver Perez went a strong 7 innings, and although he gave up 1 run and 8 hits, he left the mound with the Pirates 7-1 ahead.

A late rally wasnt enough to prevent Perez gaining his 14th win of the year, and the Reds will now rely on winning game 4 to split the series.

game133.jpg

Above: Griffey bangs in 2 runs, Right: Freel bursts home and scores!

The series was wrapped up by the Pirates as they overpowered the Reds with a 14-6 hit, and 6-3 run victory.

The game was opened up early, as the Pirates raced in 3 runs off the poor Robertson, as he left the game after just 4IP giving up 3 runs from 8 hits.

Reliever Dominguez barely settled into the game, before he gave up 3 more runs, as the Pirates charged into a 6 run lead. The Reds eventually stabalized their pitching, and managed to jot 3 runs on the board. But it proved too little too late, as the Buccos' held on to win 3 of 4 in this series.

Willy Mo Pena jacked the Reds to victory, as he went 4/4 with a 2 run shot in the 4th inning, to stretch the Reds lead to 4-1.

Eric Milton proved to be the rock on the mound, that the Reds had paid for. He gained his 14th win of the year, going 8 strong innings, as the Astros potent offence was shut down in their own backyard.

The Reds made sure of the win, with a single by Encarnacion in the 9th, which bought home 2 more runners, to ensure a 6-2 win.

Houstons Wildcard challenge is slipping away, as this defeat drops them closer to a .500 record.

Reds Talk:

August ends on a high note for the Reds, as they turnover the Astros 5-3 to end the month with a 14-14 record.

The Reds had always been in front, as they put 13 hits on the board, including 4 doubles. Brett Evert also contributed for the Reds as he went 5 shutout innings, clinching his 2nd win of the year.

Houston appeared to have a comeback going in the 9th, as Berkman homered off Urbina to pull things back to 5-3. Fortunately, Urbina maintained his composure to force a double play to end the inning, and give the Reds a series win.

Reds Talk:

Miley: "Winning tomorrow would be more than a sweep, it would mean a 14-14 month, the first time we avoid a losing month"

Urbina: "Im enjoying this role, next year i will adjust and make more of my chances"

Houston then turned things around, as they put the skids on Claussen, forcing 13 hits and 6 runs in 2 innings. Casey added a crucial 9th run for the Reds, as it proved to be the winning run with the score ending 9-8.

Yan and Urbina again combined to finish off the game as September starts with a Red win.

Game 1: Cincinnati Reds (58-76) @ Atlanta Braves (57-77)

Atlanta Dominance!

game137.jpg

Above: Pena pings another jack, his 32nd of the year, Right: Lopez strikes out, as the Reds are held to 4 hits!

The Braves made sure of a win at home, as they crushed the Reds 9-2 and held their visitors to just 4 hits as Hudson controlled the mound for 9 innings.

The game was over by the 6th inning, as 3 by 3 run innings shot the Braves into a 9 zip lead. Willy Mo Pena did hit a 2 run shot as consolation for the Reds, but there was no chance of a comeback with the Reds offence playing so badly.

Travis Blackley will be concerned after he recorded his 4th loss to slip to 1-4 with a ERA of 5.01. The signs are that he may be put back into AAA Louisville to gain some much needed experience.

Reds Talk:

Dunn: "Everyone has a slump, but its still tough to go through"
