Game 2: St. Louis Cardinals (16-14) @ Cincinnati Reds (20-9)

Cards In 10!

ga30.jpg

Above: Casey and Pena provided the little offence the Reds had today!

St. Louis nabbed the win in extra innings, as the Reds lost more than just this game on the night.

The big news, aside from the Eckstein 3 run bomb to win the game in the 10th, was the loss of Esteban Yan, who was carried off with a Hernia problem in the 9th inning.

Milton had given the Reds an almost perfect start, going 5.2 innings of a perfect game. Then with a couple of hits on the board, the Cards went ahead in the 8th on the back of an Eckstein single.

Willy Mo 'Who Else?' then tied it in the 9th, with a 2 out homer, to force the extra innings. The Cards where the team to come through in the clutch, with Ecksteins bomb sealing the win. Isringhausen went on to pick up the save.

The Reds now face a tough decision on the future of their Bullpen, as they are now without Yan and Julio from their Opening Day setup.

Reds Talk:

Miley: "Esteban is done for the season, and its a massive loss for us. Injuries can ruin a season, lets hope we can fight through this tough time"

Yan: "Its a bad injury, and in all honesty this could be a career ender. Im just going to hope the Op works, and then rehab for as long as it takes, as i want to play ball again"

Cincinnati Reds - Roster News:

The Reds have made a whole host of moves in the wake of Yan's injury. It proved to be a very busy day with trades, free agents and call-ups all taking place to be ready for the series finale vs the Cardinals.

First up, was a trade offered by the Atlanta Braves. The Braves made a 2 player offer to try and tempt the Reds into giving up SP Steve Kelly and 3B Encarnacion. The Reds immediately re-negotiated the deal as Encarnacion is a big part of their future, and instead added LF BJ Sysmanski and SS William Bergolla to the package.

The Braves accepted the offer, and sent their wantaway young pitcher Kyle Davies, and AA Reliever J. Foster to the Reds.

Breakdown:

Reds get:

SP - Kyle Davies (MLB 0-0(W/L) 2.60ERA 12K)

RP - Jon Foster (AA 1-1(W/L) 1.65ERA 27K)

Braves get:

SP - Steve Kelly (AAA 1-0(W/L) 3.14ERA 15K)

LF - BJ Syzmanski (AAA .237Avg 1HR 9RBI)

SS - William Bergolla (AAA .224Avg 2HR 7RBI)

The Reds then also announced a double free agent signing, as they completed the contracts for 2 pitchers to add to their MLB Bullpen.

Breakdown:

RP - Tim Spooneybarger - 2yr @ $500,000

RP - Matt Thornton - 1yr @ $800,000

Miley stated "These additions will give us more flexibility in our pitching. Matt will definately add some spice being a leftie, whilst Tim has alot to learn, but is already a solid Reliever"

O'Brien (GM) "The Braves deal allowed us to drop some salary, and with Julio's contract now off our payroll, we could make a couple of moves to cover our horrific injury situation"

Call Ups / Send Downs:

To complete the days work, the Reds shifted 4 players in total. Coming to Cincinnati from AAA Louisville are:

SP - Richie Gardner 3-1(W/L) 2.56ERA 32K

CF - Jamal Strong .308Avg 1HR 10RBI

Richie will start in the Pen as a Long Reliever, but is expected to spot start in the 5 role. His command has been one of the key factors for his call-up, and the Reds will hope he can cement a place in the rotation for 2007.

Jamal has been called up to sit on the bench and cover pinch duties. With Logan on the D/L, the Reds needed cover in both the outfield and pinch running roles.

The following where assigned to AAA Louisville:

Game 3: St. Louis Cardinals (17-14) @ Cincinnati Reds (20-10)

Reds Feel The Heat!

ga31.jpg

Above: Vazquez makes a tough play at 1st, Right: Miley is gone....!

The Reds blew up tonight, as they saw their division lead cut to 2 games, as Manager Miley was tossed for arguing a call at home.

St. Louis always had control of the game, but survived a late scare, as the Reds rallied to bring things to within 2 runs.

Miley was tossed for his argument after the Cards appeared to have been given a iffy run, when Willingham tagged the man at home. The run proved to be the spark for a 4 run Cardinal inning, and at the end of the day cost the Reds the match.

A day off now for the Reds, before the World Champions arrive in Ohio for a 3 game series, as the Padres will hope to reclaim the top spot in the NL West.

Reds Talk:

Miley: "Not the series we had hoped for. 2 losses, added to the injuries, have left us in a bit of a muddle. We will be glad for the day off, just to re-charge our batteries for the Padres series"

Willingham: "Im finding it easier to play to a higher level, as im playing on a more consistent basis. Molina is a great teamate, but i want to make sure im the main man for this club"

Reds Notables:

Hitting:

Pena - 2/4, 1RBI, 1 Double

Dunn - 1/3, 1RBI

Been reading your stuff since your previous half-completed dynasty...

Just posting now for teh first time... Being as it is, I'm a 25 year old Greek who has only recently discovered the game of baseball after last summer's Olympics.

So I didn't post much in case of saying something incredibly stupid due to my lack of knowledge.

Keep it up, I'm learning more about the game, its quirks and linguistically 'special' expressions just by reading in this thread.

Great job once more. Although I would love if your next attempt at a dynasty was with the A's, since I'm a lifelong Bay Area Sports fan. Preferrably East of the Bay. :wtg:

Its good to have you along for the ride :)

As for a new dynasty - im sticking with the Reds for now....but you never know for the future ;)

Cheers Mate

Upcoming Series - 3 Games Home vs San Diego Padres

Game 1: San Diego Padres (17-14) @ Cincinnati Reds (20-11)

World Chumps'!

ga32.jpg

Above: Dunn's tasty 2 run tater', Right: Griffey shows theres spice in the old arm yet, by gunning out the runner at home!

The World Champions arrived with a bump, as the Reds ground out a 4-1 win to start the series on a high.

Harang got things rolling with a solid 5IP 4H 1ER 3K effort, and with the offensive batteries starting to click, he was able to earn his 4th win.

Game 2: San Diego Padres (17-15) @ Cincinnati Reds (21-11)

Revenge of the Chumps'!

ga33.jpg

Above: Caught at 3rd. Right: Defeat dosent go down well on the bench!

Richie Gardner came in for his Reds Debut' only to see 3 homeruns put away off his first 2 innings pitched.

The Padres took advantage of the inexperienced pitcher, to race into a 3-0 lead, and with Williams on the mound, they managed to shut the Reds down to just 5 hits.

2 more Padres runs came in the 9th, before a Pena Sac Fly gave the Reds some consolation, to give a final of 5-1 Padres.

1 more left in this series, and its Carlos Zambrano on the mound going for his 8th straight win, in 8 starts.

In some other news, the Reds newly acquired Pitcher Kyle Davies, has picked up Tendonitis of the Achillies in his 1st start for AAA Louisville. He will be ruled out for over 30 days.

Reds Talk:

Gardner: "Thats an eye opener. Damn that was a tough introduction to the bigs, but hey, i stuck with it and kept us in the game for 6 innings"

Freel: "With Bobby suspended, ive been able to string some hits together. I hope this will put me in the 2B role more permanently"

Game 3: San Diego Padres (18-15) @ Cincinnati Reds (21-12)

'W'incinnati!

ga34.jpg

Above: Lopez drills his double to tie the game, Right: Freel's defence comes through in the clutch!

The Reds win the rubber match against the Padres, as Carlos Zambrano put number 8 on the board, as the Reds stole it 6-2, thanks in part to 2 errors converted into runs.

Lopez had the biggest AB of the game, as his 2 run double tied it up for the Reds in the 3rd inning. Before the Padres fielding collapsed to allow 4 more runs come home.

Zambrano wasn't his dominant self, but he worked 7IP for just 2ER, maintaining his claim for the CY Young of the National League this year.

4 games in Houston is next up for the Reds, who maintain a slender 2 game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central.

Reds Talk:

Miley: "Carlos is a different gravy, he's pitching out of this world, and if he has luck with injuries, could easily win 20 games"

Lopez: "Its just a great time to be playing baseball in this city. The Reds are a awesome team to play for, and im starting to put up the numbers that will get me noticed"

Upcoming Series - 3 Games @ Houston Astros

Game 1: Cincinnati Reds (22-12) @ Houston Astros (13-21)

Houston Walks To Victory

ga35.jpg

Above: Clayton bobbles the ball at a key moment, Right: Thornton stacks the bases, then walks in the winning run!

Matt Thornton literally walked the Astros to victory, as Houston came back from 2-1 down to snatch an unlikely win in 10 innings.

Griffey and an Error had put the Reds on the board in the early stages of the game, before the Astros late surge to claim a 3-2 win.

Milton let the Astros back into the game by giving up 2 runs in the 8th, before Thorntons ill-fated 10th inning outing. This defeat will hurt the Reds, and they will need to step things up to take 3 from 4 in this series.

Reds Talk:

Thornton: "Embarassing is the word to describe me out there. I cant believe i walked him home, its a unwritten law, not to walk in the winning run"

Miley: "These niggly losses will hurt us in the long run, as you need to grind out wins, as much as you need blow outs"

Reds Notables:

Game 2: Cincinnati Reds (22-13) @ Houston Astros (14-21)

5, 4.....3 'To' 1

ga36.jpg

Above: Casey dishes up dessert, Right: Alfonseca finishes things off!

A Casey dish, and RBIs from Clayton and Griffey where enough for the Reds to stumble to a 3 'to' 1 win in game 2 of the series.

Houston had taken the lead via a Berkman double, before the Reds tightened things up, and put on some mini offence to snatch the win.

Caseys shot opened things up for the Reds, and gave the team the momentum they needed to turn things around at Minute Maid Park. Alfonseca would earn his 8th save of the year, whilst Claussen improved to 4-3, in a solid outing.

Reds Talk:

Alfonseca: "I enjoy the pressure of the save situation, but you have to hand it to the guys in front of me, they get me to this position...i just finish the job"

Casey: "Im no where near the numbers i need to be producing. Theres alot more to come from the 'Case' in 2006"

Reds Notables:

Game 3: Cincinnati Reds (23-13) @ Houston Astros (14-22)

Houston Shows Bouncebackability

ga37.jpg

Above: Dunn drives the Reds ahead, Right: You know Miley's going to tear these apart in the locker room!

The Reds lose again, as the Astros show their spirit by coming back with a 4 run 7th inning, to snatch a 7-6 win against the odds.

Harang started the slide, by allowing 2 runs in the 7th, before Gardner came in with 2 men on, only to see them cross the plate off 3 hits. The Reds had been given an ideal start wit ha 4 run 1st inning, thanks in main to solo shots by Dunn and Pena.

Mo' would then add a 2 run shot to the scoreline, giving the Reds their 6-3 cushion. This wouldnt last, and Biggio, Bagwell and Berkman all made sure they took their chance when it arose.

This result leaves the Reds just 1 game ahead of the Cubs, with the Cards just another 0.5 back.

Reds Talk:

Miley: "See, that sort of game winds me up. 4-0 up, 6-3 ahead and we blow it in the 7th. You dont win World Series by playing that sort of game, and these lads better learn that real quick"

Harang: "Those 2 walks to start off the 7th killed us, and its unfortunate the Richie couldnt prevent them coming home"

Reds Notables:

Hitting:

Griffey - 2/5, 1RBI, 1 Double
