Lual
Reds Raid Chicago! (Above: Hernandez, Marte and Jenks will all want to impress with the season entering the clutch) With the Trade Deadline looming, the Reds made what could be their last big move to ensure Playoff Baseball comes back to Cincinnati. The rumours had recent Red' acquisition Aubrey Huff, being unhappy with his role in the organisation. Add to this the budget constraints put on the club, something had to give if the Reds were to add some much needed pitching. GM Dan O'Brien acted swiftly to get his men, as he enticed the struggling White Sox into a 5 man deal, giving the Reds what could be seen as the better end of the stick. 3 pitchers all arguably ready to pitch in the Majors came the way of the Reds. Experienced Starter Orlando Hernandez has the arm needed to give the rotation some real depth. Add to this, Marte and Jenks to give the Bullpen a boost, and the Reds now look a tasty proposition for the run in. The loss of Huff's power, will be compensated with the return of Encarnacion to the lineup, giving the Reds youngster another chance to shine on the big stage. Stats: SP - Orlando Hernandez - 4/10(W/L) 5.08ERA RP - Damaso Marte - 1/1(W/L) 2.55ERA RP - Bobby Jenks - 4-0(W/L) 3.26ERA (AA Birmingham) Quote This: Hernandez: "Its great to come here and be part of a playoff race again. My career is coming to an end, so im happy to be part of a competitive ballclub" Huff: "The whole Cincinnati saga has been a nightmare for me. The club made me promises of more money and a long term future, but nothing materialised, and i soon realised that they had no plans to make use of me after 2006. Im happy to be out of there" O'Brien (GM): "Aubrey made his feelings clear to us pretty early after the trade. We knew he would be a good bait to use to get some pitching, so i knock a few doors, and the White Sox answered. We can move on a get better with this deal"
Lual
Upcoming Series: 3 Games Home vs Houston Astros Game 1: Houston Astros (-) @ Cincinnati Reds (57-42) Reds Race Away! Above: Griffey has a big day, with a solo shot and 2RBIs, Right: The GABP is packed as the Reds fans get ready for the run in! The Reds raced to a comfortable 8-2 win over the Astros, as both Pena and Griffey added to their homerun totals, as the hosts put 17 hits on the board. The only downside for the Reds was the loss of Shortstop 'Felipe Lopez' who strained his right hip flexor, ruling him out for at least 26 days, forcing the Reds to dip into their farm system for a replacement. On the mound, Aaron Harang continued to show his worth as a starter, going 8 strong innings, giving up just 2 runs on his way to his 12th win of the year. Alfonseca pitched an inning to keep his arm warm, as the result was never in doubt. Wilson Betemit is likely to get the call from AAA Louisville, the fomer Brave, is hitting .309 with 5HR 18RBI, and will look to impress in his first showing for the Reds in tomorrows matchup. Reds Talk: Harang: "I wanted to complete the game out there, but Skip wants me to save my arm, for when we move to a 4 man rotation" Miley: "Just keep winning, thats all we can do. Its a relief to get some more pitching into the ballclub, and we hope to move to a 4 man rotation pretty soon" Reds Notables: Hitting: Freel - 3/5, 3RBI, 2 Triple Encarnacion - 2/5, 1 Triple Pena - 2/4, 1HR, 1RBI, 1 Double Dunn - 2/4, 1RBI Griffey - 2/4, 1HR, 2RBI, 1 Double Casey - 3/4 Pitching: Harang - 8I 7H 2R 2ER 0BB 3K 0HR 3.87ERA W(12-4) Alfonseca - 1I 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR 0.94ERA Box: R H E HOU 2 8 1 CIN 8 17
Lual
Game 2: Houston Astros (-) @ Cincinnati Reds (58-42) Pitchers Beware! Above: Betemit makes his mark in the field, with a running grab to start a key double play, Right: Griffey sparks wild celebrations with his tying Grand Slam in the 9th inning! A monster 10 inning game, saw the sides share 35 hits and 24 runs, as the Reds came away with a 13-11 win thanks to Griffey hittting a Grand Slam to tie it in the 9th. Houston had chugged into a 8 run lead early doors, as Starter Juan Dominguez had no answer to the Astro offence. Jose Vidrio would end up with 3 homers and 7 RBIs for the guests, and still be on the losing side... Griffeys shot was complemented by a debut homer from Betemit, and some solid Bullpen pitching, most notably by John Parrish, who gave up nothing for 3 innings, earning his 4th win. Bobby Hill would drive in the winning runs in the 10th, as he proved his value as a Reds bench player. Reds Talk: Betemit: "Wow, what can i say, its a great game for me and the team. To hit a homer in my first game for the Reds is great, but it was a real team effort to get this win" Griffey: "That just felt great out there. The crowd was buzzing, and this is what we all play baseball for. We desperately want to give these fans playoff baseball, can you imagine what this place will be like in October..." Reds Notables: Hitting: Freel - 4/5, 2RBI, 1 Triple, 1 Double Betemit - 2/6, 1HR, 4RBI Griffey - 3/5, 1HR, 5RBI, 1 Double J.Lopez - 2/4 Hill - 1/4, 2RBI Pitching: Dominguez - 4I 10H 8R 8ER 0BB 2K 2HR 6.86ERA Kline - 3I 6H 3R 3ER 0BB 1K 1HR 2.82ERA Parrish - 3I 1H 0R 0ER 2BB 3K 0HR 2.46ERA W(4-1) Box: R H E HOU 11 17 2 CIN 13 18

Lual
Game 3: Houston Astros (-) @ Cincinnati Reds (59-42) Houston Avoids Sweep! Above: Casey stumbles at first, as the Reds are sloppy in the field, Right: Griffey is burned at home! Houston showed their spirit to avoid a sweep in Cincinnati, and do their NL Central rivals a favor, as they took a 6-2 win away from the GABP. The Reds generally rely on Ace Carlos Zambrano for a guarenteed win, alas he struggled through 7IP, giving up 12hits and 6 runs to take his 5th loss of the year. At the plate the Reds made nothing of note, and only Ryan Freels 5th homer of the year gave the fans something to cheer. More bad news came in the form of CF Nook Logans injury. The Reds have now lost 2 players in this series, though Logan should be back after 15 days, as a hospital scan showed just a minor strain in his right arm. Washington is next up for the Reds, as July draws to a tense close. 60 games left, and just 1 game ahead of the Cubs, everything is to play for. Reds Talk: Miley: "We look at Carlos' starts and expect a win, maybe its an unfair pressure to put on him, he will find his form again, quality always rises to the top" Hernandez: "Im itching to get a start for the Reds. I do have a niggle in my elbow, but once im on the mound, those feelings just disappear" Reds Notables: Hitting: Dunn - 3/4, 1 Double J.Lopez - 2/4, 1RBI Freel - 1/4, 1HR, 1RBI Pitching: Zambrano - 7I 12H 6R 6ER 0BB 3K 1HR 3.46ERA L(15-5) Brazoban - 2I 0H 0R 0ER 1BB 4K 0HR 2.55ERA Box: R H E HOU 6 12 0 CIN 2 8

Lual
Upcoming Series: 3 Games @ Washington Nationals Game 1: Cincinnati Reds (59-43) @ Washington Nationals (50-50) National Pride! Above: Freel steals a bag, and Griffey drives him home, but its not enough for the Reds! A tough road trip just got tougher for the Reds, as they opened up in the capital with a rusty 8-2 loss against the Nationals. The Reds never got close to the Nationals, as Claussen collapsed on the mound, with a disappointing 4IP effort. He gave up 8 runs, leaving the Reds a mountain to climb. The Nationals did most of the damage with a 3 homerun, 7 run 4th inning, which put paid to Claussens day. 2 consolation runs did come home for the Reds, add to that a nice debut of 2.1IP by Marte, this equals the minor pluses for the Reds in this clobbering. Reds Talk: Marte: "Not the ideal debut for me, personally things went OK out there, but as a team that defeat is hard to take" Miley: "Its sloppy, i dont want to get into specifics, but we are missing out on the basics. Sometimes you fall out of routine, we need to find ours again" Reds Notables: Hitting: Freel - 2/3 Pena - 2/3, 1RBI Dunn - 3/4, 1 Double Griffey - 1RBI Pitching: Claussen - 4I 11H 8R 8ER 0BB 0K 3HR 4.45ERA L(11-6) Marte - 2.1I 3H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR 2.46ERA Gardner - 1.2I 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR 5.43ERA Box: R H E CIN 2 9 0 WAS 8 15
Lual
Roster News: The Reds were involved in a minor trade today, as the New York Mets proposed a deal to take RP Kyle Farnsworth off the Trade Block. Farnsworth failed to impress the Reds management both on and off the field, and his leaving will be a relief to those who dealt with him. AA Catcher Gary Johnson winged his way to the Reds in exchange for the experienced pitcher, as the Reds shaved their wage budget with this deal. Johnson has been automatically assigned to the Reds AA affiliate Chattanooga. Alongside this, RF Nick Markakis got his call-up to the Majors to replace the hole left by Nook Logans injury. Markakis put up decent numbers in AAA Louisville (.284Avg / 2HR / 13RBI) and will offer cover in all outfield positions.
Lual
Game 2: Cincinnati Reds (59-44) @ Washington Nationals (51-50) Washington Rub It In! Above: Dunn has an Off-Day, both at the plate, and (Right) a poor mis-field! Game 2 in Washington, and the Reds took another thumping as they slipped to a 4th straight defeat on the back of a crazy 15-5 defeat to the Nationals. Nothing went right for the Reds in any department. The pitching was poor from the word go, Dunn looked sloppy in the field, and the Reds failed to turn runners into runs. This loss leaves the Reds 0.5GB of the Cubs, and will signal some panic within the camp, as heavy losses like this are hard to take for any team. Reds Talk: Miley: "Ive got no answers at the moment. I want to know whats going wrong out there, we are just in that type of form" Griffey: "We still have time to get things right. The locker room is still tight, and we are experienced enough not to panic with 50 plus games to go" Reds Notables: Hitting: Freel - 2/5, 2RBI Pena - 2/4 Griffey - 2/3, 1HR, 1RBI Harang - 1/2, 1RBI Pitching: Harang - 5.1I 9H 7R 7ER OBB 2K 5HR 4.16ERA L(12-5) Parrish - 1.2I 3H 3R 3ER 0BB 2K 1HR 2.83ERA Jenks - 0.2I 3H 5R 5ER 1BB 1K 1HR 67.50ERA Kline - 0.1I 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR 2.80ERA Box: R H E CIN 5 10 0 WAS 15 16
Lual
Game 3: Cincinnati Reds (59-45) @ Washington Nationals (52-50) El Duke Restores Normality! Above: Casey makes a leaping grab as everyone plays a part in this win, Right: El Duke goes 7 shutout innings on his Reds debut'! With a sweep on the cards, the Reds pulled out a team effort to snatch a valuable 5-1 win against the Nationals on the back of a hard earned pitching effort from debutant Orlando 'El Duke' Hernandez. El Duke pitched 7IP shutting out the Nats' and picking up 5Ks on his way to a debut win for the Reds. Brazoban came in to see the game through and wrap up the win. Griffey homered for the 20th time this year, and with Pena and Dunn also hitting solo shots, the Reds had a perfect footing for their win. The month will draw to a close in New York, as the Reds start a 3 game set against the Mets at Shea, as baseball hits the home stretch. Reds Talk: Miley: "Boy did we need that, not only the win, but a performance on the mound. Orlando has had a few days to settle in town before we started him, and i think its paid off for us, as he has been itching at the bit to get out there, and the performance proved his worth" Hernandez: "Just doing my job out there, the team needed me tonight and i pitched without fear. I can help Cincinnati win, and that makes me feel good" Reds Notables: Hitting: Freel - 2/4, 1RBI, 1 Triple Pena - 2/4, 1HR ,1RBI Griffey - 2/4, 1HR, 1RBI Dunn - 1/4, 1HR, 1RBI J.Lopez - 2/4 Casey - 2/3, 1RBI Pitching: Hernandez - 7I 3H 0R 0ER 1BB 5K 0HR 4.77ERA W(5-10) Brazoban - 2I 4H 1R 1ER 0BB 0K 0HR 2.65ERA (Save 2) Box: R H E CIN 5 13 1 WAS 1 7
Lual
Upcoming Series: 3 Games @ New York Mets Game 1: Cincinnati Reds (60-45) @ New York Mets (51-53) Mets Maul Dominguez! Above: Casey's error in the 1st, sets off the road to a massive Mets total, Right: Not a nice night in the Big Apple for the Big Red....! After the turnaround against the Nationals, things went back to normal for the Reds, as a disastorous 1st inning pitched by Dominguez, saw the Mets rack up 9 hits and 9 runs, as the game was put to bed straight away. Casey made a error at 1st misjudging a simple throw from 3rd, but Dominguez was the main culprit of all things Met' as he lost his control and took a humbling. The Reds attempted a rally, but could only peg the Mets back to 12-4, leaving them with alot of questions to answer in the rest of the series. July is now done, and the Reds will hope the bad times are over, as the month produced a 12-15 record, leaving them chasing the Cubs for the lead in the Central. Reds Talk: Miley: "I think Juan knows what we have to do. He has let himself down in recent times, maybe a spell in a lower level will help him regain some confidence in his ablility" Davies: "Im ready, if i get the call, my bags are packed and ill be in New York or Cincinnati as soon as they need me" Reds Notables: Hitting: Encarnacion - 2/4 Pena - 1/4, 1HR, 2RBI Casey - 2/4, 1 Double Dominguez & Gardner - 1RBI Pitching: Dominguez - 1I 9H 9R 2ER 0BB 1K 2HR 6.97ERA L(5-10) Gardner - 4.1I 6H 3R 3ER 1BB 2K 0HR 5.46ERA Marte - 1.2I 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR 2.39ERA Spooneybarger - 1I 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR 3.96ERA Box: R H E CIN 4 10 1 NYM 12 16

Lual
Game 2: Cincinnati Reds (60-46) @ New York Mets (52-53) Comeback Mets add to Reds Woes! Above: Zambrano has a rough day on the mound, Right: Wheres it all going wrong for Mileys men! The Mets produced a 6 run comeback to further inflict damage on the Reds playoff hopes, as they overturned a 6-2 defecit, to crush Zambrano for 17 hits and 8 runs, in their 8-7 win. Adam Dunn had given the Reds the ideal platform, as his Grand Slam put the Reds in control 6-2. However, Zambrano going for another complete game, went into meltdown in the 7th and 8th innings, as the Mets put on 14 hits and 6 runs from their 6 outs. A single run in the 9th didnt help the Reds, as they slumped to a 2nd straight loss in New York on the back of more pitching troubles. Reds Talk: Miley: "Losing is a habit, a bad habit, buts its tough to break it. We need to regroup and start to take each game as it comes, once we start winning again, you can expect to see the old Reds back" Dunn: "There is an element of shock in the locker room at the moment. We had the game wrapped up, and managed to lose it. Lual
Game 3: Cincinnati Reds (60-47) @ New York Mets (53-53) Critics Quiet, as Reds Run Riot! Above: Wilson Betemit steps up to drive in 6 runs, Right: Adam Dunn hits consecutive night 'grannys! The Reds broke out in a huge way to end the series in New York, as they went out to break the records with a monster performance at Shea. 25 hits and 19 runs saw the Reds comfortably see off the Mets as Adam Dunn once again hit a Granny, as part of his 3/6, 2HR, 6RBI night. Wilson Betemit also deserves special mention for his 5/7, 1HR, 6RBI effort, as many had written him off before tonight due to his poor 'Buck 56' batting average. Offensively there are no worries for the Reds of late, every game is producing hits and runs at a frightening rate, its the pitching aspect thats the major concern for this ballclub, and it will take alot of hardwork to turn that around. Reds Talk: Griffey on Dunn: "He is most probably one off the purest power hitters of his generation. Not many players come along with his talent, and he is proving his ability daily for this team. He deserves alot of plaudits for the way he gets about the game, no fuss, just business" Betemit: "Im really enjoying my time in the majors, its been a tough road so far, but this breakout game gives me alot of confidence that i can compete at the top of the game" Reds Notables: Hitting: Hill - 3/6, 1 Double Betemit - 5/7, 1HR, 6RBI, 1 Double Encarnacion - 4/7, 1RBI, 1 Double Pena - 4/6, 1HR, 2RBI Dunn - 3/5, 2HR, 6RBI Casey - 5/6, 1RBI Markakis - 1RBI Pitching: Clausssen - 5I 4H 3R 3ER 0BB 1K 1HR 4.49ERA W(12-6) Kline - 2I 5H 1R 1ER 1BB 3K 0HR 2.86ERA Jenks - 2I 4H 3R 3ER 2BB 1K 0HR 27.00ERA Box: R H E CIN 19 25 1 NYM 7 13

Above: Javy and the Reds swing and miss against the Marlins, Right: Is Griffey's shot at a ring slowly disappearing?! Flordia turned up in Cincinnati and started off their smash and grab raid with a 8th inning winner, to see off the Reds 3-2. Sean Casey had put the Reds in control 2-1 through 6 innings, with his 2RBI single. The lead didnt last, as Marte then gave up the tying run in the 7th, before Brazoban took the defeat by giving up a solo shot to Marlins Catcher Paul Lo Duca. The Reds couldnt respond with their last at bats, and see the game slip through their fingers to groans from a packed GABP. Reds Talk: O'Brien (GM): "We have alot of faith that things will get better. Lual
Game 2: Florida Marlins (55-55) @ Cincinnati Reds (61-48) Griffey Fails in the Clutch! Above: Casey misses the ball at first, setting the Marlins up for the winning run, Right: Griffey hits into a Double Play with the bases loaded in the 9th! Deja Vous' for the Reds as the Marlins snatched another late innings win thanks to Miguel Cabrera's 9th inning RBI to setup a 4-3 win. The Marlins had taken a 3-0 lead into the 5th inning, only to see Javy Lopez wipe that out with 1 swing of a bat, as he slammed a 3 run shot deep to left to tie it a 3. Hernandez stayed strong on the mound through 8 innings, keeping the game tight, setting up Kline to see the Reds through to the 9th. Alas Steve Kline hit a rough spot, and gave up 3 hits and the lead run to Cabrera. The Reds 9th inning could and maybe should of been key. Griffey came to the plate with the bases loaded and 1 out, leaving him in an ideal position to win the game for the Reds. 2 pitches in, and a ground ball to short, sees Andino start a game ending double play. Game Over for the Reds, who now sit 2 games back of Chicago, and 1 game back of St. Louis. Reds Talk: Miley: "These were the type of games we were winning early this year. Now things are getting tougher, so its more of a mental problem rather than our talent. A little bit of confidence can go along way, and its my job to give the players this strength" J.Lopez: "Im playing for a contract, whether it be with the Reds or a new team in free agency, i just have to show im at 100% everyday" Reds Notables: Hitting: Dunn - 2/4 Griffey - 2/4, 1 Double J.Lopez - 1/3, 1HR, 3RBI Pitching: Hernandez - 8I 9H 3R 2ER 0BB 4K 1HR 4.61ERA Kline - 1I 3H 1R 1ER 0BB 1K 0HR 2.95ERA L(5-2) Box: R H E FLA 4 12 0 CIN 3 8

Lual
Game 3: Florida Marlins (56-55) @ Cincinnati Reds (61-49) Swept Away! Above: Davies starts well, but soon falls apart to take another loss, Right: Hill takes a bag as the Reds are desperate to generate a win! Florida ripped through Cincinnati like a tropical storm, leaving the Reds with a wrecked playoff dream, as the Fishies wrapped up a sweep of their hosts with a crushing 11-3 win in game 3. Kyle Davies back in the majors started well enough, but soon found himself on the end of a 5 run 7th inning, as the Marlins rammed home their dominance in the series. The Reds had no answer, and could only watch the Marlins tear them apart, as Reliever Tim Spooneybarger also found himself on the end of a 5 run Marlin haul. Javy Lopez continued his recent good from with another solo shot, but it wasnt to be for the struggling Reds. Next up another NL East contender rolls into town, as the Braves face a 3 game set in Cincinnati, with the Reds in desperation mode for a win or 2. Reds Talk: Miley: "Its a shock to our system, we need something to click on the mound for us. Carlos starts tomorrow against the Braves, and we need his early season form to return, to give everyone a lift" Tim McCarver (Fox Sports): "The Reds are a poor team living off their early season form.
