A's Put 10 on the Board, Win By 2!

Bullpen Solid Yet Again

untitled10kp.gif

Manager Ken Macha gets the team fired up, A's WIN!!

Today, the Devil Rays and Athletics met for the third game of their series and it was the best game of the series for the A's. They were able to put up 10 runs on the board, and the bullpen kept them in the game, allowing only two to score over 3.1 solid innings of work.

The Athletics headed into the top of the fifth, down 3-0, when C Jason Kendall and DH Erubiel Durazo hit a pair of two run home runs to take the 4-3 lead.

After the D'Rays took the lead back with some key hits in the bottom of the fifth and sixth, the A's exploded with a five run seventh, lead by Durazo, who hit an RBI single, 3B Adam Melhuse, who hit a three run bomb, and SS Bobby Crosby who also hit a homerun, of the solo kind. The A's added another run in the top of the 9th to take a commanding 10-6 lead, and went on to win it 10-8.

The Bullpen pitched much better for the second straight outing, combining for 3.1 innings, 1 K, and allowing two to score via the home run.

The Athletics will come home to face the Toronto Blue Jays, a series in which they must capitalize on the opportunity of not facing former CY Young winner Roy Halladay.

At least I know what it takes to win, at least 3 HR's.

Funny thing is, I have been gradually bumping down the User Power on my sliders!

A's 2 Out Hits Win the Game!

Harden solid in second start.

untitled18dn.gif

The Blue Jays greeted the Athletics with a very tough home opener, but in the end, the A's were able to pull out strong.

The A's took the lead on 2B Keith Ginter's two run home run off Blue Jay starter Ted Lilly in the second inning. After that scoring stayed at a standstill until the fourth when CF Vernon Wells answered back with a home run of his own, this time of the solo kind. The Jays were not done with the longball though, as 3B Eric Hinske hit a two run home run off A's starter Rich Harden to take the 3-2 lead in the sixth.

However, this home run barrage was not done yet, as for the second straight game, the A's scored four or more runs on the board in the seventh, lead by a two out, two run home run by CF Bobby Kielty, then followed by back-to-back RBI doubles by Hatteberg and SS Bobby Crosby, and finally by LF Charles Thomas.

The Oakland bullpen assembled by GM Billy Beane came on again in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the game, as the Oakland Athletics defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3.

Haren Dominates!

Defense and clutch hitting lead the way

untitled11wc.gif

Above: Chavez saves a single to left, and hugs and hand-pounds all around.

There was no doubt who Oakland Manager Ken Macha gave the game ball today. Starter Danny Haren, looking to rebound from his horrid start last week in Baltimore, threw a two hit, complete game shutout against the Toronto Blue Jays. It wasn't all Haren though, as the defense kept him in the game by turning numerous double-plays and spectacular catches.

The A's wasted no time scoring in support of Haren as LF Eric Byrnes, fresh off the disabled list, hit a home run over the right field wall to put the A's up 1-0. However, little did the A's know at that time that, that home run was all Haren would need today.

In the eighth, Oakland added two more runs on 3B Eric Chavez's double, increasing the lead to 3-0. And that was all Haren would need, as the A's coasted to an easy 3-0 victory.

Break out the Brooms, Series Sweep

Blanton great as A's Sweep Jays

untitled15bj.gif

Above: Chavez hits his 3rd home run of the season, and Closer Huston Street pumps his fist after his first save.

As the Oakland A's slowly entered the ballpark today, only one thing was on their mind, sweep the Blue Jays. And when the A's stepped onto the field today, they knew they were going to win from the start.

Oakland 3B Eric Chavez lead the scoring off with a two run home run to take an early lead off of Toronto rookie David Bush. The A's added one more run in each of the next two innings via a sac fly by LF Eric Byrnes, and 1B Scott Hatteberg's RBI single. These four quick runs gave Oakland starter Joe Blanton a comfortable cushion to work with through his 6.2 innings of work.

Blanton gave the A's six plus solid innings of work, allowing one run on seven hits before handing the ball over to the bullpen to close out the game.

Closer Huston Street came on to achieve his first save of the season and to close out the series against the Blue Jays.

The A's will begin a three game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, this looks to be a good matchup as it will be the first time these two teams have met since the Angels dispatched of the A's to advance to the 2004 Playoffs.

A's Beat Divison Rival in High Scoring Affair

Team Hitting Gives A's Win

untitled15oh.gif

Above: LF Eric Byrnes dives and makes a spectacular catch, and the Angels bench sit extremely dissapointed by their teams performance.

Oakland starter Kirk Saarloos took the mound today and was quickly greeted with a tough second start of the season thanks to the Angels. 3B Dallas McPherson singled home the first run of the game, and the Angels were off to a quick 1-0 lead.

However, the A's were quick on the trigger, and with two outs in the bottom of the first, scored three times off of CF Mark Kotsay's double, DH Erubiel Durazo's double, and SS Bobby Crosby's single.

After a quiet second inning, the Angels struck back with three of their own. One came from an errant throw by 3B Eric Chavez, and McPherson's two run home run.

Again, the A's answered back with another run via Durazo's solo home run in the bottom of the third. Both teams went quietly in the fourth, but the fifth was a whole seperate story.

In the top of the fifth, LF Juan Rivera hit a solo bomb for the Halo's to take a 5-4 lead. But yet again, the A's answered back with multiple runs of their own, this time putting four on the board. Chavez plugged the left field gap with a double, followed by three straight RBI singles by Durazo, 1B Scott Hatteberg, and RF Nick Swisher to put the A's back on top 8-5.

Rookie phenom Jairo Garcia would come in to pitch 2.2 innings in relief of starter Kirk Saarloos, shutting the Angels down quickly without allowing a hit. Closer Huston Street came on in the ninth to earn his second save of the season, and to extend the A's winning streak to five.

With two aces taking the mound today in Oakland what more did you expect? A slow pitch softball game? No way, Anaheim's Bartolo Colon and Oakland's Barry Zito were locked up in a tight one here in Oakland.

Like game one, the Angels took a quick 1-0 lead as RF Vladimir Guerrero knocked in 2B Chone Figgins with a double. The scoring stayed quiet until the bottom of the fifth when the A's LF Eric Byrnes pounded a single into right center to tie the game at 1-1.

It wasn't long before the Halo's answered back with another big hit from Vlad, this time a home run to put the Angels back on top. From then on, Colon, Brendan Donnely, and Francisco Rodriguez shut down the A's as the Angels went on to win this one 3-1.

Durazo Saves The Day!

Harden Undefeated

untitled17xi.gif

Above: Durazo's homer lifts A's over Halo's, Angels stunned.

Like every game this series, one team didn't waste any time scoring early. This time the Athletics got out to an early lead, as 3B Eric Chavez and DH Erubiel Durazo got hits to drive in the first two runs of the game to take an early 2-0 lead.

This was all that Athletics starter Rich Harden would need until late in the ballgame as Harden took a perfect game into the fifth inning, where a single by LF Juan Rivera took away the chances for Harden's first career no-no. The Halo's brought Rivera around to score on an RBI double by 1B Jose Molina, but wouldn't score again until the eighth, when Rivera drove in a run of his own to tie it at two all.

However, in the bottom of the eighth, the A's answered back as always, this time with the winning run, as Durazo blasted a solo bomb to left to put the A's up 3-2. Securing the A's a win was closer Huston Street who came on in the ninth to earn his third save of the year.

Oakland now travels to Arlington, Texas where they will face the Texas Rangers in a two game set.

Three Late Runs Give A's Win

Error Cost Rangers Game

untitled13wk.gif

Above: Byrnes scores the go ahead run, and Buck's Bullpen fails him.

It seems this year that one team has to score early, and today was no different than any other game. The Texas Rangers, playing host to the Oakland Athletics, jumped on the scoreboard early, as DH Mark DeRosa blooped a single into short center to take the early 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, the A's answered back, as backup catcher Adam Melhuse dropped a blooper of his own into center to tie the game up at one. In the sixth, the A's took the lead on a fielders choice by Melhuse, taking the lead for the first time in today's ballgame.

The Ranger's quickly answered back, as CF Gary Matthews Jr. hit plugged the gap with an two-RBI double, taking back the lead, and putting the A's behind by one heading into the seventh.

Like always, Oakland's now potent lineup struck back after reliever Ron Mahay overthrew SS Michael Young on a botched pickoff throw that landed in short center. CF Mark Kotsay quickly plugged the gap, allowing the runners that moved up 90 feet to score.

The scoring settled until the ninth, when the Rangers had a runner on third, and one out, but closer Huston Street came in and struck out PH Mark Teixiera and Young to end the ballgame.

The Wins Keep on Rolling In

untitled18jd.gif

Above: Chavez's homer secures win, team walks off happy.

Oakland starter Joe Blanton showed his true potential as he dominated the Rangers potent lineup. Blanton threw an almost perfect game for the A's today, pitching eight innings, striking out seven, and only allowing one run.

Oakland's offense came from two home runs by C Jason Kendall and 3B Eric Chavez, Kendall hit the first home run of the game, and then Chavez hit the second, a two run home run, to put the A's up 3-0.

Saarloos, Scutaro Lead the Way!

A's Take Over First Place For Good

untitled18st.gif

Above: Scutaro's 3 run job sails over the left field wall, and 'Grover couldn't pull "The King" early enough.

Oakland came out firing on all cylinders today, putting up seven runs in the first three innings en route to a 7-4 win.

Oakland starter Kirk Saarloos had a perfect game going until the seventh when he hit a bit of a speedbump. First, RF Ichiro ended the perfect game with a single to center, then LF Randy Winn hit another single, and 3B Adrian Beltre belted a three run bomb to right center. Luckily, the A's were up 7-0 heading into the seventh.

The A's scored on RBI hits by 3B Eric Chavez, SS Bobby Crosby, C Jason Kendall, and 1B Scott Hatteberg. The major blow came from 2B Mark Scutaro, who blasted a three run home run to left to put the A's up 7-0 in the third.

Zito Sleepless in Seattle

Mariners, A's in First Place Tie

untitled15cq.gif

Above: Ichiro started the 6 run Mariner inning, while Hansen capped off the inning and game.

Oakland starter Barry Zito looked sleepless as he got shelled today in Seattle. Only lasting two-thirds of an inning, Zito gave up six runs on six hits. Leading the Mariners offensive explosion was DH Dave Hansen, who crushed a grand slam off of Zito. That was the third grand slam the A's pitching staff had given up in 16 games.

Even though Seattle went on to win the game handily, Oakland's offense also had their bright spots. Three A's homered, including LF Eric Byrnes, C Jason Kendall, and RF Nick Swisher who hit a three-run homer.

The A's now head south to face the Angels in a series which should be a lot of fun to watch.
