External Sound Card

I was thinking of purchasing an external sound card to replace my onboard sound on my motherboard.

I have a laptop and was wondering if after installing the external sound card if the onboard sound would automatically disable.

If anyone is running an external sound card I would like to get some info from you on this matter.

TIA

I run external sound cards on my pc....they are for music recording....I run protools.......within the software, there are options for each channel (in, out, aux etc.) that I can choose where to send the sound....it will then bypass all other sound cards and go to the one I choose.....these external sound cards are pretty much plug and play because I'm using it for a certain software....if you buy the right kind of sound card, it should come with some kind of set-up software....most likely, you should be able to control it through windows....I'm not an expert, so I couldn't tell you how to do any of it, or which card to buy for what you need.....most external sound cards are for some kind of "professional" appliction...so be careful what you buy, and make sure the salesman knows what he is talking about......for what it's worth, Guitar Center is having big sales this weekend, and you might be able to find a good deal, they usually carry a lot of good gear

good luck
