THE PADRES @PETCO PARK GAME 3: PITTSBURGH PIRATES(0-4) @ SAN DIEGO PADRES(4-0) PIRATES BRING THEIR BATS (LEFT,Matt Lawton celebrates his lead off homer; RIGHT,Matt Lawton robs Dave Roberts of an extra base hit) Well the Pirates with their egos and hopes starting to go down finally pull out a win. A huge win to be exact they must have got a big pep talk or learned how to hit cause the Pirates bats went crazy today. The Padres could do nothing in the first 2 innings let alone. The Pirates combined for a team high 10 homeruns this game. Darrell May just could not withstand a combined 7 homers in the first to innings leaving the game with 1.2 IP,7H, 7R, 2SO, and a 37.80 ERA. All the Pirates runs came off of a 2 homerun day by Matt Lawton, Jack Wilson, Craig Wilson, and Benito Santiago filing in for the tired out Cota. Then there were homers hit by Jason Bay and Ty Wigginton. Sean Burnett pitched a gem giveing up no runs on 4 hits with 2 strikouts. So today was a combined huge game for the Pirates and they hope to feed off of this win and keep it up. Tommrow the Pirates hope to split the series with the Padres and get that uch closer to .500. THE PADRES @PETCO Park GAME 4:PITTSBURGH PIRATES(1-4) @ SAN DIEGO PADRES(4-1) DEFFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS (LEFT,Jack Wilson makes a great diveing stop;RIGHT,Ty Wigginton gets airbourne for this amazing catch) The Pirates headed into todays game with spirts high hopeing to split the 4 game series with the Padres. While the Padres needed to re-group after a 12-0 beating given to them by the Pirates just last night. This game was not high scoring well there was only one run the whole game. That run came off of Craig Wilson bat hitting a solo homer in the 6th. The Padres just could not get a hit because of the Pirates great deffense. The Padres had amazing deffense too, hense the low scoring game but nobody got anything huge started. The Pirates got the lone run they needed to win so the spirts will be high durring this 2 game winnging streak the Pirates hold. They were hopeing to get a win off of dominant Ben Sheets but he made sure that was not going to happen today. Nothing could be strted by the fighting buccos. This game was just an offensive explosion by the Brewers. Every started pulled at hit off be it from Kip Wells Joe Roa or John Grabow. Most of the brewers runs came off of homeruns espically off the bat of Brady Clark who went deep 3 times this afternoon. The Pirates puled off 3 homeruns of their own but that just was not enough to win. Nothing could stop the Brewers who this year are 3-0 against the Pirates. The Pirates have to figure out the Brewers if they do not want to get swept by the Brewers. Tommrow the Pirates look to get their first win vs the Brewers and Doug Davis. (LEFT.Lance Nix hits his first homer as a Pirate;RIGHT, Josh Fogg celebrates his complete game shut out) The Pirates after a pulverizing lose yesterday to the Brew Crew were looking for retaliation. All the Pirates would need was a solid pitshing performance and some offense to win the game. Today the Pirates played smaller ball then usuall with base hits instead of the normal homer fiesta. The game started slow with no runs by either teams. In the second Lance NIx steped up determined to get his first hit as a Pirate. He did so in a big way getting his first homer of the year. Josh Fogg would not let a run up this game he was almost unhittable with a solid 3 hitter complete game. Jason Bay had the most offense today hitting a homerun and a 2 RBI double to give the Pirates a commanding lead they needed. Todays game will hopefully get the pitching staff back on track. They are getting the run support they ned the pitchers just need to let up not as many runs and the Pirates could be out of the basement in no time.Tommrow the Pirates hope to win the series with the brewers for the last game of the series. Today was no differnet the Pirates and starting pitcher Mark Redman were looking forward to todays match-up with the brewers. The game started with the brewers loading the bases in the 1st with no men out, but Mark Redman didn't lose his cool he just kept pitching and not giveing up hits and the brewers had to settle for only one run off of a sac fly by Geoff Jenkins. To retaliate the Pirates in the 2nd got a homer off of Jason Bays bat to tie things up. The next mirage of runs didnt come untill Craig Wilson homered in the 5th and then Bay and Craig hit back to back homers in the 8th to pad the Pirates lead for Mesa. The game was hard faught but the pirates just had more offense from their team. The Pirates take the series 2 games to 1 to increase their record to 4-5 and into 4th place in the NL central. Tommrow the Pirates will have the day off but then have to face the first place Chicago Cubs which will be a tough series. (LEFT,Derrek Lee attempts to break up the double play but Jack Flash pulls it off;RIGHT,Craig Wilson trots around first base after his homer in the 5th) With the day off the Pirates had time to rest up for the first place cubbies. They were ready for the challenge and from start to finsih were just man handled by the cubs. This game was not a blow out but a fine game by both clubs. The first game from the cubs was an RBI single up the middle by Garciapara scoring Patterson to give the cubs a 1-0 lead. The pitchers then duealed and the Pirates tied things up in the 5th from a homerun by Craig Wilson giveing him 7 on the year. The cubs responded in the 6th with a sac fly to right scoring nomar. Then to add to the 1-run lead Derrek Lee hit a homer in the top of the 9th. The Pirates bats could only produce 5 hits today and 1 run so it was a bad offensive game on thier behalf. Struggleing Mike Gonzalez gave up the homer to Lee and needs to find his stuff fast. The Pirates will look to even the series tommrow sending their ace to the mound so till tommrow. Oliver Perez took the mound to keep the cubs bats as silent as a mouse. The Pirates bats on the other hand were not as cold. Oliver Perez stared the game how he wanted shuting sown the side 1-2-3. The for the Pirates they did not do the saem with Jack Wilson on 1st Craig Wilson drove a ball deep to left to give Ollie the run support he needed. Oliver gave a run up off of a week grounder that was misplayed by Wigginton but that was the only run surrenderd by Perez. The Pirates also added on runs from a solo homerun by Lance Nix and another 2 run homerun in the 8th by Craig. Jose Mesa came in on the non save situation and gave up an RBI single but that wasn't enough for the cubs to win. The Pirates can keep winning if Craig Wilson's bat stays as hot aas it has been hitting 9 homeruns so far this year leading the MLB. Oliver set his ERA back down close to 1.00 so expect more to come from both stars. Tommrow the Pirates will face dominating Kerry Wood and send strugleing Kip Wells to the mound. (LEFT,Matt Lawton hits the first of 3 homeruns on the day;RIGHT,Craig Wilson celebrates his walk-off homerun) The Pirates got to try on their new striped alternate unis today and hopeing they would bring luck. The Pirates bats have woken up in the past couple games and Craig Wilson leads in MLB in homeruns and RBI's. So the Pirates were hopeing for a big day again. The cubs drew first blood getting a slow roller to get past Ty Wiginton who has had shakey deffense all year so the cubs went up 1-0. Kip Wells had a okay pitching preformance but gave up many hits but the deffense always bailed him out. The Pirates tied the game up in the 5th with a Lawton solos homer which ignited the bats. The cubs scored 4 other runs off of a Kerry Wood 2 RBI double a Sosa sac fly and a RBI single by Nomar. The Pirates on the other hand scored their runs off of a Jason Bay homer that put him in 2nd place in th MLB in homers, and 2 more blasts off of Matt Lawtons bat one being a 2 run bomb. The game ended up tied going into the 9th. No runs were scored till Craig wilson stepped up in the 12 and hit a walk off homer to end the game in exciting fasion. Todays game was a close and exciting one with alot of big bat work from both teams. The Pirates win the series 2 games to 1 and get their record to .500 for the first time since 2002.
