bravesj858
PETCO Park Condemned, Padres Homeless San Diego Union-Tribune- October 10, 2004 The city of San Diego has condemned PETCO Park due to the unstable structure it has obtained in a period of the past few months in which the stadium can collapse at any time. The San Diego Padres need to find a new home within 6 months or risk forfeiting the 2005 season. Several graduate engineering and chemistry students from the University of Califorina in San Diego started noticing extreme rusting on the steel structure in August during a game against the Braves. “Even though the steel is only a few years old, it looked like it was there for centuriesâ€, Larry Finley, PhD candidate said. “Wherever this steel came from should be also condemned.†UCSD points the cause of the structure primarily because of the park’s severe exposure to the sea air, a potential accelerator of rusting. Dr. Rose Perez explains; “steel oxidizes easier in the presence of a more basic compound, such as seawater breeze as opposed to freshwater breeze, thus causing an easier collapse of the steel based structure.†PETCO Park's steel beams have rusted to the point to where it is no longer safe to play games in the park. City officials declared the structure of PETCO Park unstable following a study prompted by UCSD’s findings. Tim Duffy, head of the crew said “If this stadium gets another full house, it will collapse, perhaps causing the greatest disaster in US History.†With PETCO no longer playable, the Padres try to turn back to Jack Murphy Stadium to play in, but Alex Spanos refused, stating a loss of revenue for the Chargers. “We cannot keep letting the Padres make stupid mistakes and be rewarded by the city for making them. We have to make them pay for their own mistakes and have to get out of this problem themselves.†Padres owner John Moores is outraged that the city won’t help. “I’ve done so much for this city for my tenure as owner, now they are going to make me pay for something the construction company did? That’s unfair!†“If San Diego does not give me a new stadium plan by the end of the year, this team is headed for Las Vegas!!†Moores threatened the council in a statement yesterday. Alex Smith, PhD candidate believes there is another factor into why the steel has rusted so quickly. “Several ballparks older than PETCO have never rusted this fast, so something else that we don not know about is happening.†There is one thing for certain. The Padres future is uncertain. The San Diego Union Tribune will report as this story develops.

bravesj858
PETCO Park investigation finds Moores Responsible San Diego Union-Tribune- November 16, 2004 An investigation conducted by the city of San Diego has found that San Diego Padres owner John Moores sabotaged PETCO Park during and after its construction. Major League Baseball is expected to take action within the next week and his owner status is questionable. The city conducted the investigation of PETCO Park following Moores’ threats to move the team last month. “We couldn’t just sit there and let Moores bully us around anymore, we gave him the park, it’s time that we saw what that $200 million investment was really doingâ€, Mayor D,ick Murphy responded. “What we found was Moores wanted to get rich off us and leave.†San Diego Mayor D.ick Murphy wanted quick answers to this sudden problem of PETCO Park becoming unplayable. Apparently, he paid for low quality steel at one third of the price, which was already subject to rust factors. He used half of the $200 million from the city to pay the city of Las Vegas to finance the move there and put the rest of it in savings. A memo in Moores handwriting said, “I hate this dump called San Diego, I want to leave to greener pastures, like Las Vegas. They will treat us better than San Diego ever did.†The break in the investigation came when the members found letters addressed from the University of Stanford discussing ways to rust steel quickly and his daily plans of the steel. “Records showed that he daily sprayed water on the steel foundation to speed the rusting processâ€, head investigator Dale Mays said. “Combine it with the sea breeze coming through PETCO Park continually and rusting will quickly show its effects.†The investigation results really turned heads with Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig and the other owners. “That is a deceitful act to play on your fans and your city,†Anaheim Angels Owner Arte Moreno responded. “Makes me think twice about my team’s name change to the Los Angeles Angels.†Selig will call an owner’s meeting for their opinion. He hopes to reach a decision by the end of the week. Currently, he has no comment. (note to moderators: i'm not trying to cover for a bad word, it's the mayor's first name. thank you.) Stix
Finally started it eh? Looks good so far. I'm not much for owner mode(dude to the fact that I think the CAS stinks and prefer the real thing), but I will definatly be here watching.
bravesj858
i'm going to try and see what owner mode has in store. i will be starting a braves dyansty soon as well, but i'll try to have the padres season at least a week ahead of the braves dyasnty(in game time, you won't see me playing padres vs. braves at the same time in both leagues, like i would be at the end of may in padres and starting up may in the braves dyansty.) don't worry, the braves dyansty will also be tracked here. bravesj858
Moores Out Of Baseball, Public Reacts San Diego Union-Tribune-November 19, 2004 San Diego Padres owner John Moores has been banned from Major League Baseball permanently for his working of the sabotage of PETCO Park. A statement released late yesterday from Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig reads “I find what Moores did go beyond the normal threat of relocating a franchise. He extorted the city of San Diego and its fans by using dirty and underhanded techniques to get what he wanted, money from San Diego and a way out of town. This behavior cannot go unpunished. After much debate, a permanent ban was necessary for his unsuitable conduct to his team.†A very sober John Moores moments after his banishment from baseball. Moores in a counterstatement said “I am very sorry for what I did; I just wanted the very best for my team. After all the fiasco trying to get the Padres into PETCO, I felt that staying in this city much longer was going to damage my relationship with the city of San Diego. Las Vegas was my best option at the time.†Padres fan think very differently about Moores, especially after the fiasco. Bill Viy, Padres fan for 30 years, said “Moores was a bad owner, he never wanted to win at all. Now we know he didn’t like us at all, he just wanted to get the most cash.†Grace Amenoine, Padres fan for 15 years said “I hope this team finds a new owner that cares for the team like their family, not just another investment that Moores did.†Mike Pens, a Padre fan that boycotted the move to PETCO, said “with Moores gone, maybe we can finally win!!†MLB is now searching for a new owner to take over the Padres, and will take over team operations until further notice. The Padres outlook for 2005 is looking bleak with no stadium or no owner.

bravesj858
Padres New Owner Promises Better Product San Diego Union Tribune- January 15, 2005 Major League Baseball has found a new owner for the San Diego Padres: Liberty Conea (ko-ney-a), founder and owner of MilTech, Inc, a local company founded in 1999. She commits to treat the Padres like a part of this city. Conea stated during her acceptance speech, “I’m very glad Mr. Selig gave me this opportunity to bring the Padres back from the misery they were in the past few months. I will make this team a competitor and eventually winners!!!†Her first move was to fire Kevin Towers and replace him with herself as acting General Manager. She will also be the President and CEO of the club. “I don’t want a trace of the loser façade that has been on this franchise to be there anymore…we are creating a new tradition.†Bruce Bochy will keep his job as manager for the time being. The Granddaughter of Army General Creighton Abrams, Conea moved to San Diego in 1997 because “I wanted to become enriched into my family’s legacy.†She wanted to join the military, but was unable to because rubella left her deaf at birth. The Start Up business owner is now a Major League owner. With a degree in both Business and Engineering from the University of Rice, she started up MilTech, a company based on making the best technological innovations for military use. The company is estimated to be worth three billion dollars and technology from her company has been used in Operation Iraqi Freedom. An avid baseball fan and supporter of the Padres since her arrival, Conea saw the owner vacancy spot as a time to fulfill a more recent dream, “to see my team be on top.†She plans to make a contract with Fox Sports Net West to air all of the Padres games. “This will be great for satellite customers that were unable to watch games previously on the cable exclusive Channel 4,†Conea thinks. The futures of Matt Vasgerian and Mark Grant are uncertain however, as Conea is eyeing Dwayne Kuiper and Mike Kukrow for play by play. “Overall, the Padres will become a more San Diego friendly team†Conea ended her press conference with. MilTech is also known to have relations to Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. (i apolozige for the delays....i had a few setbacks.....)

bravesj858
Padres Field will be First of its Kind San Diego Union Tribune- January 18, 2005 In a press conference today, the new San Diego Padres owner, Liberty Conea, reveals a plan for a “floating ballpark†which will have the name of Padres Field. The stadium will be ready by Opening Day 2005. The new ballpark, to replace the condemned PETCO Park, will be the first of its kind, a ballpark that sits in the middle of San Diego Bay. Due to timing concerns, the stadium will only hold 7500 at the start of the 2005 season, but she hopes to expand in the near future. Her ultimate goal is to create a unique ballpark with the military façade of San Diego designed throughout the stadium and a one of a kind experience at Padres Field. “SBC Park may have McCovey Cove, but all homers that go outside this stadium go straight into the water†Conea joked. The island stadium is a new innovation from Conea's MilTech. Conea’s company, MilTech, has been working on floating airports as a way for the military to save money from sending aircraft carriers on the water. “The idea of using one as a ballpark came to mind immediately when I saw that the city was virtually out of land,†Conea said during her press conference. “Hopefully it will both spark new interest in the team and the idea of floating airports.†Many wondered how people would get to the stadium in the first place, but Conea quickly had answers. She will have ferries running every 10 minutes from various ports around San Diego Bay starting around three hours before gametime. Fans will also be allowed to bring their own canoes or ships to the stadium and park them on the stadium’s dock for a small charge. Conea feels that “opposing teams won’t know what to think when they see that our stadium is an island. This will give us an advantage, at least for the first visits.†The Padres journey for a park is over…but will they thrive in Padres Field? Stay tuned.
