Oliver Perez and Ben Sheets battled with the score 1-0 Brewers until the 7th inning when the Brewers blew the game wide open with a 7 run inning. All Ben Sheets would need however would have been that 1 run because he threw a complete game shutout. J.Wilson, went 2 for 4 while J.Bay was 3 for 3 with a HBP. J.Castillo and H.Coto were 1 for 3. Kip Wells picked up the victory while Jose Mesa got his first save of the season. The Brewers were up 1 to 0 until Jack Wilson singled home Jose Castillo in the 5th to tie the game at 1. In the bottom of the 7th with Jose Castillo on first Humberto Cota launched a home run into the left center field seats to put the Pirates up 3 to 1. Salomon Torres pitched a scoreless 8th while Jose Mesa closed out the game with a scoreless 9th. Pittsburgh wasted a gem by Mark Redman who pitched a complete game giving up only 1 run. The Pirates managed 12 hits in the game but the hits were scattered and they could not get hits with runners in scoring position. Pittsburgh had something going in the top of the 9th with runners on 1st and 2nd and 0 outs bur 3 quick outs ended the game. In the 5th inning Rob Mackowiak led off with a 2B. He then moved to 3rd on a Daryle Ward ground out. Jose Castillo then picked up the RBI with a single. The rest was up to the pitching staff. Fogg had 7 scorless, Mike Gonzalaz came in in the 8th and gave up a lead off 3B but then preceeded to strike out the next 3 batters. Jose Mesa came in in the 9th to earn his second save. The Pirates played some small ball tonight with sacrifice hits and drawing some much needed walks. Dave Williams picked up the win by going 7 innings and giving up only 2 runs. Mesa picked up his 3rd save of the season. Ryan Vogelsong came in and pitched 4 innings allowing Mesa to come in in the 9th and pick up another save and another victory for the Pirates.
