PETCO Park deck collapses!

Padres to move back to Qualcomm stadium

December 21, 2004

Just as the Padres acquired Dave Roberts from Boston for Jay Payton and Ramon Vasquez, their biggest move of the offseason, the Padres aqcuired a problem. The second deck at PETCO Park collapsed, falling down on the lower deck and damaging the dugouts and clubhouses. Officials are speculating that there could of been some kind of faulty steel rods holding up the park collapsed. The Padres will make a final decision on when they can get renovations done, but some experts have said it will take about a year and 7 months, roughly 70+ games into the 2006 baseball season. The Padres have worked a deal with the NFL's San Diego Chargers, who currently play in Quallcomm Stadium, for basic stadium renovations and getting Qualcomm back into "baseball mode". It'll be tough, no doubt, but not that tough, as the stadium was used for baseball all the way up to 2003. There will be a slight change for Qualcomm, however. The bullpens will be moved from near the right and left field foul poles, to closer down the field. "Thank God they're moving it, that bullpen angle there was horrible." Padres closer Trevor Hoffman said.
