Sarginto
Opening Day Has Arrived! 4/4/05 Cincinnati, Ohio - Since the acquisitions of Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran last winter, one thing has been on the minds of every Mets fan out there, Opening Day. Opening Day couldn't come any sooner either. With Beltran and Martinez flaunting their athletic muscle during Spring Training in all-star fashion, every Mets fan has been anxious to see what they put together during the regular season. In order to accomidate Beltran, the Mets had to make a bit of a rough move. Gold glove center fielder Mike Cameron was quoted as saying that he would move over to right field if the Mets had indeed acquired Carlos Beltran. As we know, Beltran was taken in by the Mets, so Cameron had to learn a new position. A few rumors around the land were spread that Cameron was discontent with this move, despite having said he would have no problem with it. Only time will tell if this move is a good move, or a bad move. Although the off season started off with a much needed blast, there were also a few dissapointments. During Spring Training, starting pitcher Steve Trachsel was diagnosed with a herniated disk. He opted to have surgery, thus leaving him out till atleast August. In order to replace Trachsel, the Mets had to acquire another starting pitcher. Fortunately for the Mets, the Dodgers were looking for a catcher to fill into their line up. The Mets just so happened to have a decent catcher that would fit perfectly in the Dodger line up. The Mets traded Jason Phillips for Kaz Ishii right before the end of Spring Training. Thus giving the Mets the cherry on top for their five man rotation. Since the Piazza experiment didn't prove to be the solution at first base last year, the Mets acquired gold glove first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz from Boston. As for the future hall of fame catcher, he will spend his most likely last season in New York behind the dish with the help of Ramon Castro. Here is a look at the major acquisitions that the Mets have recieved during the off-season: CF - Carlos Beltran SP - Pedro Martinez 1B - Doug Mientkiewicz How good will these acquisitions prove to be? Only time will tell. Play ball!
