UncleMo
I think it would be great if someone posted a "how to" in order that others can easily learn how to mod the datafile. I myself would like someone to take me through the datafile to show me how to mod the things that have not been modded yet. Such as sounds, visuals, etc. Can someone please assist in this? I don't want to learn camera views or pitching meters. I want to learn the little things to make the game better. Please help. Mo.
Jim825
Last year, a guy named "snepp" posted a tutorial on his website. Here's a link: http://sio.midco.net/mvpbaseball/ Some things have changed, but most of the concepts are the same.

UncleMo
When you go to learn about what to edit it just says: "Sorry, this page is still empty. The actual editing of the file is not difficult, but it is a painful process to describe. For now, just open the datafile.txt in notepad and poke around a little bit, maybe change a few values. Then save and move on to the next page" Can we get an experienced datafile modder to list things like "If you want to change this, do this"
Jim825
Did you download and look at the datafile layout spreadsheet listed on the main page? It lists a lot of information about various items in the datafile. I know that it is geared toward MVP2004, but there are a lot of things that were carried forward into the MVP2005 datafile. UncleMo
"layout spreadsheet", No sir, but will go back one more time and look at the layout. Can't remember why my brain imputed "skip that and go on to the tutorial". Thanks.

I did a datafile tutorial for MVP 2004 that should still be available. Also, in the 2005 versions of Roddata I have a tutorial within the Readme file. I'll be glad to share any things you have questions about. I've practically memorized the thing by now. Feel free to PM me.
UncleMo
Hmm, first thing I'd like to do is open my data.txt file that is installed already so I can fool around with it. It won't open up with notepad for some reason...

It won't open up with notepad for some reason... I'm assuming you mean "datafile.txt" and not "data.txt". What do you mean when you say "it won't open" with notepad? Did you uncompress the file first using eazip (eazip -u datafile.txt)? If you don't, when you try looking at the file, you will just see a bunch of undecipherable characters. UncleMo
May i decompress it using biggui even though it is not in a .big file? I don't have EAZIP nor do I grasp the batch file concept. :duh: So I try to stick with non eazip forms of messing with files. Yes, datafile.txt. Sorry Jim. big shmooz
There is a program called "DFCompUtil.exe" that let's you open the file so that it can be read in notepad & then compresses it back to the datafile after you made your changes. It is available in the downloads section. http://www.mvpmods.com/modules.php?name=Do...teD&show=10#cat It is the top download on the page called "MVP Compression Utility 2005". I guess I'm showing my age here because it's the DOS (aka Command Prompt) utilities that I feel safest with, having worked with DOS-based computers for many years before Microsoft developed Windows..... Don't use biggui. Biggui will not work unless it is a .big file. Read my post above to you that has a specific program for this.
