stecropper
I have just read where Out of the Park Baseball allows the user to import historical Teams from the Lahman Data Base as does MVPEdit for MVP Baseball. I am curious how the ratings produced by OOTP compare with those produced via MVPEdit. If anyone knows the different type of Ratings generated for individual Players imported from the Lahman Data Base with OOTP would you please post them here. I would like to determine if it is worth purchasing OOTP solely to make a comparison of the two games player rating assigments. I would like to know what various ratings are produced for individual players by OOTP as well as the variances assigned for each of these ratings. From reading the OOTP literature I can not determine if you can import a Single Season and have it generate player ratings based on that one season alone. It sounds like it generates some type of career based rating only. If anyone knows the answer to this I would certainly appreciate this information as well. Thanks, Don
fizzjob
The generated actual ratings are based on the season you import, not on the player's entire career (however, the "Talent" ratings can be based on the career). In fact, a modified version of the Lahman database exists specifically so that you can import players with actual ratings based on their entire careers. The ratings it creates from the import are fairly basic. For hitters, the following ratings exist: Contact, Gap Power, HR Power, Eye, Avoid K's, Running Speed, Stealing Ability, Running Insticts, Sac Bunt, and Bunt for Hit. For pitchers, there are ratings for Stuff, Control, Movement, Velocity, Endurance, and Holding Runners. All players get fielding ratings, which are Range, Fielding Pct., and arm ratings for Infield, Outfield and Catcher. Catchers also get a Passed Ball rating. Due to limitations with the Lahman DB, not all of these ratings can be calculated, and many of them (Sac Bunt, for example) are equal for everybody. Some ratings (such as arm strength) are randomly assigned, but all ratings can be manually edited in-game. Here are a couple of screenshots for you, so you can kind of see what I mean: As far as import options, you can adjust hitters with few at-bats or innings pitched, so that a guy who went 2 for 3 in a given season doesn't automatically become a stud. You can also calculate "Talent" ratings (which are a player's potential, not a player's actual ratings) based on his entire career or on the remainder of his career (with the imported season being the starting point for that). The game can also calculate generic L/R splits, or assign them more randomly. In OOTP 6.5, you also have the option to base fielding ratings on the player's entire career or on the imported season only. In 6.12 and earlier, if you import Craig Biggio in 1988, he would only have ratings at catcher. 6.5's new option will also generate ratings at 2B. Where OOTP really excels is in generating a fictional universe, however, where the players aren't tied to any historical stats or (more importantly) pre-conceptions of performance. OOTP has a free demo you can download, so you can see for yourself what it does: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/downloads.php#games I'm not sure if the demo is 6.12 or 6.5, but it should give you a good idea either way. Hope that helps!
stecropper
fizzjob, Thanks so very much for the excellent response. It' what I was hoping to get but didn't really expect I would. In fact, you exceeded my expectations. I have ordered OOTP with the intention strickly to compare it's ratings to MVPEdit's ratings. With the information you have provided I am sure I will not be dissappointed. This should be very insightful especially for the Pitchers since their rating catagories appear very similar. Thanks Again, Don
fizzjob
No problem, Don. If you have any questions regarding OOTP, the message boards over there are absolutely fantastic for support - just about every question has been answered about a dozen times over. ;)

How did you get all that info and pictures for the players? I only have the generic players.

You can download the most current All-In-One Installer over at www.simleaguecentral.com, although you have to register (for free) to access the downloads. There is an older (4-9-05) version over at www.ootpdownloadcenter.com, as well.
