Cards Ready for Good Start

Tony LaRussa's defending National League Champions are eager to kick off 2005, but their challenge has been called. St. Louis will open the new year in Houston against The Rocket, Roger Clemens. LaRussa assures us that they will be ready for the future Hall of Famer, and that they are excited about the fresh start.

Game 1: Cardinals @ Astros

Seeing red, the good red

Morgan Ensberg showed off his power in the 2nd inning, after shooting a 1 out triple past a diving Larry Walker. Jason Lane brought him home on the first pitch he saw, delivering a sac fly to right to plate the first Houston run of the season.

Yadier Molina led off the 3rd inning with a single to center, but was later picked off first base by Houston pitcher, Roger Clemens. Tony LaRussa came out to argue, and the replay showed that the umpire missed the call. The Cardinal's bench seemed fired up after their manager went out to argue that call.

Jim Edmonds lead off the 5th inning with what appeared to be a homerun to center at first glance, but it fell just short for a double. But a throwing error by centerfielder Jason Lane allowed Edmonds to take the extra base, and it came back to haunt them after Mark Grudzielanek hit a sac fly to nod the game up at 1.

Jim Edmonds came through with another big hit, this time to give his team the lead. With 1 out in the 7th inning, Edmonds launched a deep home run to left center field to break the tie, and give the Redbirds the lead, 2-1.

Jason Isringhausen came in to start the ninth, looking for his first save. He gave up a hit to pinch hitter Mike Lamb, but got through it without giving up any runs. Starting pitcher Chris Carpenter got the win while going 8 strong innings, giving up 7 hits and striking out 4.

Hitting Noteables:

Larry Walker: 2/4 2B

Jim Edmonds: 2/4 HR, 2B, RBI

Morgan Ensberg: 1/4 3B

Player of the Game - Chris Carpenter: 8 IP, 7 H, 0 BB, 4 K

Game 2: Cardinals @ Astros

Morris shines, injury bug bites

g2pictures0kh.png

left: Albert Pujols goes deep; right: Cardinal players walk off the field after win

The worst thing that could have happened to the Astros in the 2nd inning, did. Lance Berksman led off that bottom of the 2nd with a sharp liner to left field for a single. Morgan Ensberg followed up with a ground ball to short, and Berkman injured himself while sliding into 2nd trying to break up a double play. This is a huge blow to an already weak Houston offense.

Albert Pujols gave Matt Morris some breathing room in the 4th, launching his first home run of the season into the Crawford Boxes in left field. However, the injury bug also bit the Cardinals in the 4th, as Mark Grudzielanek dislocated his finger while diving at a ground ball. Jeff Bagwell delivered a sac fly in the 4th inning to plate Adam Everett to tie the game up at 1. Thus ends the adventurous 4th inning.

The Cardinals threatened again in the 6th, after Larry Walker led it off with a double down the left field line, which set it up for an opposite field single by Albert Pujols to regive St. Louis the lead. Scott Rolen just missed his first home run of the season, as a 353 foot shot to left field was foul by about 5 feet. Lucky for the Astros, as they got the ground ball and turned the double play. Unlucky for the Astros, Jim Edmonds lifted up his team mate, hitting his 2nd homer of the season into the Crawford Boxes. Cardinals lead, 3-1.

Jason Isringhausen came on in the ninth and struck out the side to earn his 2nd save in the last 2 days.

Hitting Noteables:

Albert Pujols 2/4 HR, 2B, 2 RBI

Jim Edmonds 2/4 HR, RBI

Adam Everett 2/4 2B

Player of the Game: Albert Pujols 2/4 HR, 2B, 2 RBI

Game 3: Phillies @ Cardinals

No no? yes yes!

g3pics1gg.png

left: Scott Rolen connects for 1 of 2 bombs; right: Mark Mulder celebrates his first career no hitter

Mark Mulder shined early in his Cardinal debut, retiring the first 12 hitters he faced, and Scott Rolen gave him some support. With 1 out in the 4th inning, Scott pulled a line drive home run just to the right of the left field pole. 1-0 Cards.

Mulder was on cruise control through the first 5 innings, until a routine groundball to second baseman Mark Grudzielanek just... tanked. Mark lost the perfect game, but still had a no no going. Meanwhile on the offensive side, Scott Rolen scorched another pitch into the outfield seats, hitting his second homer of the day, both solo shots. 2-0 Cardinals.

Mark stayed on in the 9th in search of his first career no hitter. He got PH Jason Michaels to ground out, PH Ryan Howard to ground out, and Jimmy Rollins to fly out on a nice running catch by Larry Walker. Congratulations Mark!

Hitting Noteables:

Scott Rolen 2/3, 2 HR, 2 RBI

Player of the Game: Mark Mulder 9 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 12 K

Marquis on the mark, late runs not too late

g4pics9sv.png

left: Jim Edmonds slides in safe ahead of the tag at home plate; right: Cardinal players celebrate as they walk off the field

Who would blink first? Both pitchers shut out the opposing team through the first 6 innings, and there were only 6 combined base hits. But the Cardinals weren't ready to spoil a great outing from Jason Marquis just yet. Albert Pujols led off the bottom of the 7th with a bloop single to left field, and after Scott Rolen grounded out, Jim Edmonds was intentionally walked to bring up Reggie Sanders with 2 men on and 1 out. He struck out his first 2 at bats, but came through when it counted, delivering a 2 run double to left center to put the Cardinals on the board.

Jason Isringhausen came in for the ninth, looking for the save. A strike out and 2 ground outs later, he got it. Jason Marquis pitched 8 terrific innings, giving up only 2 hits and striking out 8. Cardinals win, 2-0.

Hitting Noteables:

David Eckstein 2/4 2B

Reggie Sanders 1/3 2B, 2 RBI

Bobby Abreu 1/3 SB

Player of the Game: Jason Marquis 8 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 8 K
