Right: Russ Adams belts a game-winning solo HR in the 8th. 04/08/05 -- Shea Hillenbrand led-off the second inning with a double and after Aaron Hill and Eric Hinske both failed to plate him, Frank Catalanotto drove a Wade Miller slider out of the park to make it 2-0 Jays. The Red Sox would get to the Jays starter Gustavo Chacin in the fifth as they strung together four straight hits to tie the game. Chacin would however manage to strand two runners and get out of the inning with the game tied. Chacin would go another inning and a two-thirds before succumbing to a strained right rib cage and be forced to leave the game in the seventh inning. Team doctors say he will only have to miss two weeks and the team placed him on the 15-day DL following the game. Outfielder Gabe Gross has been recalled from AAA Syracuse to take his roster spot. Pete Walker was moved into his rotation spot and will get at least one start in his absense. Vinnie Chulk relieved Chacin and got the final out of the seventh and got through the eighth allowing just a hit. Russ Adams put the Jays on top in the bottom of the frame with a one-out solo home run (1) to give the Jays a narrow 3-2 lead. Miguel Batista would come in and retire Trot Nixon, pinch hitter Doug Mirabelli and Johnny Damon in order for his 3rd save in as many attempts to nail down the victory for the Jays. Vinnie Chulk got the win (1-0) in one and a third innings of work. Red Sox starter Wade Miller absorbed the loss (0-1) going eight innings allowing all three Jays runs on eight hits to go with no walks and nine strikeouts. "Believe it or not, I was looking for a pitch I could drive out in my at-bat against Miller in the 8th. He was visibly tiring and was struggling with command so at that point you could just sit back and wait for a pitch to hit as he was getting quite wild," said Adams. Game notes: Every Jay in the starting lineup other than Orlando Hudson had a hit in tonight's contest. Prior to tonight's game, only Vernon Wells had homered for the Jays, now 3 different hitters have at least one. Jays pitchers had allowed just one run in the first three games of the season and tonight they have already passed that by allowing two. Right: Aaron Hill belts an opposite field walk-off grand slam in the 9th. 04/09/05 -- The game seemed to be moving along briskly until the 6th where Trot Nixon reached on a single and advanced to third on a Manny Ramirez single to set up a first and third, none out situation for David Ortiz who hit a ground-rule double plating Nixon to make it 1-0 for Boston. Towers would maintain his composure though and get out of the frame without further damage. Towers would go another inning before exiting the game. Corey Koskie stepped to the plate to lead-off the bottom of the 7th against Bronson Arroyo and Koskie was seeing the ball extremely well tonight as he was 2-for-2 going into the at-bat with a couple of singles. Koskie would step into a 1-1 offering from Arroyo and smack it into the second deck in right field to tie the game at 1. That was all the Jays would get in the inning and Towers would leave with a no decision to be relieved by Justin Speier to start the eighth. Speier would set down the Red Sox 1-2-3 with a strikeout. Bronson Arroyo returned for the bottom of the 8th and set down the first batter he faced before being pulled for Mike Timlin who came in to face Gabe Gross. Timlin would get out of the frame after Orlando Hudson was caught stealing 2nd with 2-out. Timlin returned for the 9th and didn't seem to have it all together. Frank Catalanatto led-off the inning with a double into right-center field, setting up an RBI situation for Vernon Wells who they opted to walk intentionally to face Corey Koskie. Koskie delivered with a basehit to center-field but it was too shallow to score Catalanotto who held at third. Aaron Hill stepped up to the plate and after missing a fastball up and in he drove an outside pitch out well past right-fielder Trot Nixon who was playing shallow. It wouldn't make a difference where Nixon played on it as he went into the bullpen behind him for a walk-off grand slam as the Jays took it 5-1. The home run was also Aaron Hill's first major league home run. Jason Frasor got the win in relief (1-0), he pitched one-third of an inning and got a strikeout. Timlin got the loss (0-1) going two-thirds of an inning allowing four runs on three hits. He also walked a batter and recorded a strikeout. Josh Towers went seven innings on a no decision allowing a run on six hits. He walked no one and struck out 10 Red Sox. Bronson Arroyo went seven and one third innings allowing a run on six hits as well, walked no one and struck out seven. "I didn't try to hit a grand slam there I just went with the pitch and drove it the other way." said Aaron Hill. Game Notes: Corey Koskie (4-for-4) and Aaron Hill (3-for-4) combined for 7 of the 9 Jays hits in the game, 2 HR's and 5 RBI. Koskie was a game time decision after demming himself eligible to play after missing 2 games due to a fractured nose he suffered in the 2nd game of the season. Gabe Gross appeared in his first game of the season after being recalled from AAA and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. Shea Hillenbrand and Alex Rios did not play for the first time this season. Outlook: After a battle of number 5 starters, game 3 of the series will feature a battle of aces as Roy Halladay (1-0) takes on Curt Schilling (1-0). Both pitchers pitched a complete game shutout in their first starts of the season so it should be a very good pitching duel if both of them are on. The Jays will be hoping for the sweep to improve to 6-0 on the season. During the current 5 game streak the Jays have outscored opponents by a margin of 16-4. He is only hitting .214 this season in four games with no homers or RBI's, all 3 of his hits are singles. Aaron Hill has emerged as a very good hitter and has become his successor. Hill is hitting .444 in five games this season with a home run and 4 RBI. Hill was a first round pick of the Jays in the 2003 draft. Members from the team were unavailable for comment at this time but rumor has it that a deal may be in the works to move him sooner rather than later. Right: Curt Schilling with a fist-pump after avoiding a sweep. 04/10/05 -- Only one man stood between the Jays and a 6-0 season and it was Curt Schilling. He was up to the task as he shut the Jays out, despite them out-hitting his team 7-6. The problem was cashing in runners in scoring position, the Jays could not cash in any of their 7 base-runners to fall 2-0. The Red Sox got their first run after Bill Mueller scored on an RBI groundout from Tony Graffanino. They would add another run in the sixth on a Manny Ramirez sac-fly. Roy Halladay didn't pitch badly but he came up on the losing side as the Jays provided no run support for him. Halladay got the loss (1-1) in seven innings of work. He allowed two runs on five hits, walked a batter and struck out two. Brandon League pitched a scoreless two innings of work in relief of him but the Jays couldn't come back. Game Notes: The Jays had a runner on second 4 times but failed to score him in all oppurtunities despite hitting the ball hard, unfortunately right at people. Although the Jays failed to sweep the Red Sox, they are pleased to take 2 of 3 from them. "It's just one of those games where the other guy pitches better than you and your team can't get anything on the board against him.", said Halladay. Injuries: SP Gustavo Chacin (strained ribcage) - 12 days left Outlook: The Jays begin an 8 day, 8 game 3-city road trip tomorrow night with stops in Oakland, Texas (Arlington) and a rematch in Boston. The Jays then head home for 5 straight against New York and Baltimore to end a span of 13 straight games without an off-day. Due to the lack of off-days in the coming part of the schedule, Pete Walker may be forced to make 2-3 starts depending on the result of his first start on Wednesday in Oakland. If things don't go very well, Brandon League may end up making a start or two in his place. The Jays starters for the Oakland series will be Ted Lilly (1-0), Dave Bush (1-0) and Pete Walker (NR). Both Ted Lilly and Rich Harden threw up zeroes until the fourth where Rich Harden threw a fastball that he seemed that he injured his shoulder on that got hit out of the park for a solo home run by Corey Koskie to give the Jays a slight lead at 1-0. Harden left the game after the pitch with what is described as an inflamed right shoulder and is expected to miss the next ten games. Steve Sparks relieved him and retired Aaron Hill to end the frame. Lilly kept throwing in his all-star form from last season and scattered just six basehits over the entire game in a complete game shutout. Sparks' only blemish in long relief of Harden was a lead-off home run in the ninth inning off the bat of Russ Adams. Lilly closed the door in the ninth despite allowing two hits including a double to Erubiel Durazo, his second of the game to preserve the 2-0 victory. Lilly matched his hits allowed total of six with six strikeouts. Rich Harden suffered the loss (1-1) despite allowing just two hits in three and two thirds innings of work. Game Notes: The Blue Jays had just four hits in the entire game but managed to win on the strength of two solo home runs. Jays batters also struck out fourteen times in the contest. "Harden just overpowers you and throws you off-balance with his off-speed stuff and Sparks is a junk ball pitch who throws a lot of knuckleballs that are hard to judge.", said Corey Koskie who had a hit off each pitcher including the game winning HR. Right: Brandon League upset with himself after the loss. 04/12/05 -- The Jays came out today and look liked they were completely uninspired in 2-0 walk off 15 inning loss to the Oakland Athletics. The Jays struggled mightily with any offense and seemed to be fooled easily on off-speed pitches as they mustered just 7 hits in the 15 inning game compared to 10 by the A's. Jays batters also struck out 20 times in the game. Mark Kotsay stepped up with a runner on first and one out in the fifteen and smacked an inside pitch from Brandon League out of a walk-off two run home run. The loss in extra innings spoiled a great game pitched by Dave Bush who got no run support at all. He pitched nine innings and allowed just four hits while walking none and striking out nine batters. Jason Frasor and Justin Speier each combined for two innings a piece of shutout ball. Danny Haren also pitched a great game for Oakland going eight strong innings. He also allowed just four hits but he whiffed ten batters. Justin Duchscherer got the win in relief of Haren (1-0) while League got the loss (0-1). Game Notes: The Jays used all their players in the game tonight. Frank Menechino left the game on his first defensive play in the ninth inning after coming in as a defensive replacement. He complained of pain in his shins and will require splints for the next two games before being ready to play again. "I don't what it was but for whatever reason, the bats just didn't come out today. Hopefully, we can get a better effort from them tomorrow and take the series.", said manager John Gibbons. Right: Eric Chavez beaned by Pete Walker in the bottom of the 1st to load the bases with none out. 04/13/05 -- The Jays got off to a good start in the first as Aaron Hill led-off the game with a single. He would score two batters later on a bomb to straight-away center by Corey Koskie (3). After the first inning, howevever, things would go downhill for spot starter Pete Walker and the Jays. Walker struggled with command in the first and the first 3 batters went in this order: single, walk, hit batsman to load the bases with none out. Thankfully, Walker got out of the inning after a double play and groundout with still a 2-1 lead. In the second, he struggled again with command and loaded the bases, allowing just a run again to tie the game at 2. In the third, he gave up a pair of runs on a string of hits to give the A's a 4-2 lead. He returned in the fourth and retired the first batter easily but then gave up a solo home run (1) to Jason Kendall before being pulled for Vinnie Chulk. Chulk got out of the inning without further damage but was roughed up in the next inning (the fifth). Chulk gave up a basehit followed by a walk before retiring the first batter of the frame. He would later give up a three-run shot to Marco Scutaro with two out. He was pulled for Brandon League who got out of the frame easily with a pop out. Corey Koskie homered for the second time in the game for the Jays in the top of the sixth to make it 8-3. However, League gave up a run on three hits in the bottom of the inning. Justin Speier came in to the pitch in the seventh for the Jays and allowed a hit but got out of it without further damage. In the ninth, it was another story as he gave up three hits and a run to make it 10-3, which would be the final. Pete Walker got the loss (0-1) with a very ugly line: 3.1 ip, 8 h, 5 er, 2 bb, 1 hbp, 0 k, 13.50 era. Joe Blanton got the win (1-0) for the A's in a complete game seven hitter where he allowed three earned runs, walked none and struck out eight. Jays Notes: Corey Koskie has three homers in his last three games. Guillermo Quiroz had his first hit of the season, a single in the bottom of the 2nd. He previously went 0-for-9 to start the season. Pete Walker allowed more runs tonight than the Jays have allowed in a game (5) to this point. The previous high of runs allowed in a game was 2. Russ Adams got his first night off after playing in 7 of the Jays first 8 games. Aaron Hill made his first start in the lead-off position going 2-for-4. He will likely bat #2 for the immediate future behind Adams. Orlando Hudson will get the night off tomorrow night with Frank Menechino being able to play. Menechino has appeared in just 2 games and has had only 3 at-bats. Vernon Wells will also get the night off tomorrow. Wells, Aaron Hill and Hudson have played in all 9 games. "I just didn't have good command of my pitches all night and was forced to throw over the plate and without being a hard-thrower I was getting rocked." - Starting Pitcher Pete Walker "I think the spot starter experiment of Pete Walker is over. The Jays have designated him for assignment, giving the team 10 days to trade, release or send him outright to the minors. "Walker is a veteran guy and we wish him all the best. We're gonna place him on waivers and hope someone makes an offer to us for him. Aaron Hill followed on the third pitch of the game with a solo jack of his own as the Jays took a 2-0 lead. Josh Towers succesfully shut down the Rangers through the first two innings in order before the Jays added more insurance. Russ Adams hit his second solo homer of the game (4) in the top of the third inning, Koskie followed with one of his own (5) in the top of the fourth. Towers would allowed a 1-out double in the bottom of the frame to Rod Barajas which was his first hit allowed. He would be erased as Laynce Nix grounded into an inning ending double play (6-3-1). Benoit seemed to settle down, after two scoreless innings he allowed a one-out infield single to Alex Rios and was pulled for rookie Rosman Garcia who was making his major league debut. Reed Johnson grounded out to second baseman Alfonso Soriano but it was slow enough to advance Rios to second. Frank Menechino then delivered with an opposite field RBI-double to extend the lead to 5-0. Josh Towers continued to mow through their lineup allowed just a walk before the Jays scored again, this time off Garcia. Reed Johnson hit a solo homer (1) in the top of the 9th to make it 6-0. Towers returned for the ninth but looked shaky as his command seemed to be leaving him due to tiring. He gave up a lead-off single and then a walk before being pulled leaving two runners on and none out for Brandon League. League would allowed a one-out RBI double to Mark Teixeira to score one of the runners but after a line out, he then struck out Alfonso Soriano to end the game. Towers got the win (1-0) going eight strong innings. He allowed just a run on four hits, walked one and struck out six. Joaquin Benoit got the loss (0-2) as he went six and a third innings allowing five runs on five hits (four of them home runs), walked no one and struck out seven. Jays Notes: Corey Koskie has hit four homers in his last five games. Josh Towers has allowed just two earned runs in two starts over 15 innings. Russ Adams' two homers were the first time in his professional career that he has hit two in one game. Right: Alex Rios' ball flies into the second deck in the 5th, ending Kenny Rogers' night, also a 3-run shot. 04/15/05 -- The game started off very slowly as the Jays went down in order through the first three innings to Kenny Rogers and Roy Halladay had allowed just a basehit to that point but things got interesting in the top of the fourth. Russ Adams led-off the inning with a single followed by a Corey Koskie single, Shea Hillenbrand then drove in Adams with an RBI-single to open the scoring. The next batter, Reed Johnson, took Kenny Rogers out for a 3-run blast to make it 4-0. Rogers would then retire Frank Menechino on strikes to end the inning. The Jays were at it again in the top of the fifth as Guillermo Quiroz singled with one out, Russ Adams singled again and then this time Alex Rios belted a three-run blast to make it 7-0. The night was then over for Kenny Rogers as he left after just four and one third innings allowing seven runs on seven hits. For the second straight game, Rosman Garcia came out of the bullpen for the Rangers and he got out of the inning without further damage. Halladay kept mowing the Rangers down scattering basehits and had not allowed a runner to reach second base unti the seventh where he had runners on second and third with just one out. He got a lineout from Alfonso Soriano then struck out the next batter to end it. The Jays got to Garcia in the top of the eighth as Shea Hillenbrand and Eric Hinske each hit 2-run homers to make it 11-0 at that point. Halladay got into trouble again as he walked Hank Blaylock to lead-off the inning and then gave up a two-run blast to Mark Teixeira. John Gibbons would then pull him for Jason Frasor who got the final six outs in the game allowing only one baserunner on an error to Shea Hillenbrand. Roy Halladay got the win (2-1) in seven innings of work, he allowed just two runs on six hits, walked four and struck out five. Right: Mark Teixeira homers in the 6th. 04/16/05 -- The Jays spoiled a great peformance from their starter Ted Lilly by looking lost at the plate against Chris Young and two relievers. Young allowed just two hits on route to a 2-1 Rangers victory (3-0). Ted Lilly allowed just six hits over five innings and two runs, walked a batter and struck out eight in the loss (2-1). The only reason he didn't last longer was because of a high pitch count due to so many strikeouts. Both Rangers runs scored off the bat of Mark Teixeira who had an RBI single in the third and and solo home run in the sixth, both off Lilly. The Jays scored their lone run on a Reed Johnson solo home run (3) off Young in the seventh. The series finale will be played tomorrow as the Jays hope to take 3 of 4 from the Rangers. cybernetic Posted September 7, 2005 Author Share Posted September 7, 2005 Shaun Marcum gets the call, Walker goes down to AAA 04/17/05 -- The Toronto Blue Jays announced prior to this afternoon's game against the Texas Rangers that RHP Pete Walker had cleared waivers and been outrighted to AAA Syracuse. In his place, RHP Shaun Marcum has been recalled and will make his big league debut starting Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox. Marcum was 1-0 in 2 starts so far for Syracuse with a 2.45 ERA. Dave Bush was throwing a hell of a game, mowing down batter after batter. Bush pitched six and one third scoreless innings and struck out nine en route to a 3-0 Jays victory. Brandon League, Scott Schoeneweis and Vinnie Chulk pitched two innings of no hit shutout ball but the Jays couldn't mount a comeback. Alex Rios doubled to RF with one-out, he scored on an RBI-triple by Vernon Wells that was also hit to RF and Wells scored on a Shea Hillenbrand RBI single. Roy Halladay took a no-hitter into the fourth before giving up his first hit of the game (a 2-out single to Hideki Matsui). He would get out of the inning without further damage. Halladay combined for five strikeouts in the fourth and fifth innings alone. The Jays added their third run of the game on the first of two solo homers from Russ Adams (, he would hit another in the 7th. The Yankees finally got on the board as Matsui hit a solo homer in the top of the 7th. Halladay produced an inning ending double play to get out of two on one out jam in the 7th as well. The Jays tacked on another run in the 8th after Shea Hillenbrand hit a two-out double, he was pinch ran for by Eric Hinske (who later took over at 1B), Reed Johnson drove him in with a single up the middle to give the Jays their fifth run, this off reliever Tom Gordon. Halladay returned for the ninth and got a double play ball from Alex Rodriguez after allowing a lead-off single to Gary Sheffield, Hideki Matsui then flew out to Vernon Wells to end the game. However, he struck out both Jason Giambi and Hideki Matsui to get out of it without any damage. The Jays got to Randy Johnson in the 4th as Vernon Wells and Shea Hillenbrand both singled to put runners on first and third with one out. Reed Johnson and Frank Menechino both contributed with RBI singles to give the Jays a 2-0 lead. Vernon Wells would add a third Jays run on a solo homer (4) off Johnson to make it 3-0 and the Jays would hang on. Justin Speier and Miguel Batista went the final two innings for Batista's 5th consecutive save. Both Speier and Batista had 2 strikeouts a piece. Ted Lilly got the win (3-1) pitching seven scoreless innings allowing just five hits, a walk and seven strikeouts. Randy Johnson picked up the loss (1-2) as he went seven and two-thirds allowing all three Jays runs on eight hits, walked none and struck out five. Tom Gordon got the final out of the game for the Yankees going just one-third of an inning. Vernon Wells went 3-for-4 with a pair of a singles and a home run. Outlook: Dave Bush (2-0) will get the ball against Daniel Cabrera (1-1) in the opener against Baltimore tomorrow night. Gustavo Chacin (0-0) will be activated from the DL to play game two and Josh Towers (1-1) will get game 3. IF Aaron Hill will be able to play in the final game of the series. OF Gabe Gross will likely go back down to AAA to make room for Chacin's return.
