KAuss
Was wondering what people's regular swing habbits are as far as pre-pitch anticipation... I'm a pure guess hitter... I can't determine the pitch dynamically, but usually if I preload a certain zone, I can draw walks and get hits... Needless to say this is far from perfect... I also try to keep my swings in the up, down, left, right, with no diagonals on the left analog... This gives a wider zone of error vs diagonal zones... Then just rely on timing to hit it to the direction desired... I find that once I stop preloading and lose my will to wait on a specific location of a pitch, everything seems to be a strike... This usually happens after playing 3 games straight... The next few usually suffers from the lack of paitience... Then switching from a 95+ thrower to a 65-70 curve pitcher also screw me over game to game... No preloading in the world can make me time a 69 mph off speed pitch!!! So for those people that use the analog stick dynamically, how well do you fair as far as walks and hrs? Obviously the reason I preload is to get the best swing for the specific pitch... Vs. humans it's a good way to catch pattern, but vs. the AI it's a lot more random... I tend to aim up and in a lot more vs AI since I know they WILL give you up and in pitches to pull HARD from time to time... Rarely would it happen in multiplayer games though hehe, and when it does, it still goes out :D
uspdude
I used to be a guess hitter as well, you will just have to keep praticing so you can tell whether that pitch is a strike or ball. now i can get about 1-5 walks in most of my game. In the first inning try to watch more pitches, see how the pitcher's breaking ball's movement (very important) and speed. then just memorize it and apply your timing to it, it works for me. Normally I don't really pre-select the zone i want to swing, but i only do so when im facing those un-hitable pitchers, such as knuckleball pitcher and pitchers with really weird pitching style. KAuss
So you don't swing with direction? I do pretty much the same thing in the first... I usually sit 3 pitches each batter before my first swing... I have to at least see the fastball speed vs. the off speed stuff before I'm confident... I preload because it makes a huge difference in contact when you guess right... I get around a low of 3 hits, to highs of 10 plus a game... It just sucks that most of my hits come from my 6, 7, 8 hitters... Cause I always preload for the long ball with the big guys... I've tried dynamic swinging to press the stick towards the pitch after it's thrown, but it's almost impossible to hit a fastball with this method... By time you figure out if it's a fastball or not, you won't see the locatoin... With preload, I never miss a 4 seamer...
uspdude
i don't quite understand what do you mean by "swing with direction". yeah, i have to agree with you, the good thing about preload is less reaction time when you guess right. dynamic swinging can be hard to get used to it at first, if you just started dynamic swinging, i would suggest to just purely go left and right with your analog stick at the beginning, with dynamic hitting you'll finding yourself hitting more 2B or even 3B. By time you figure out if it's a fastball or not, you won't see the locatoin oh i don't know if you know this or not. but in MVP 2005 different pitch has their own color. so you know its a fast ball at the moment the pitcher released the ball. Just don't give up, keep pratice you'll get there : )
JP_Frost
I preload my swings, but sometimes I get pull happy. I think the best thing to do if you preload is to adjust to the situation; use the gaps and don't always swing for the fences. In terms of walks, you just really have to recognize the pitch. If you're up against a guy with a big 12 to 6 curve than you know that when it starts off low in the strikezone that it won't drop in, same goes for sliders, splitters, sinkers, etc. The worst thing you can do is swing at a pitch waaaay out of the strike zone ( even though sometimes you do get fooled ). i dunno, there isn't really a sure shot way to hit in this game which makes it fun and different things work for different people. Just go with whatever you feel comfortable with.

I do this to practice for 2 player games... Sadly though, my current owner's mode season, half the team is batting around low 200s... Even though I'm 6 - 0... I ave about 5 strike outs a game offensively, mostly by swinging, but earn about 3 walks... The AI seem to really like catching hard hit line drives argh!!! sdoyle7798
I assume pre-load means you move your analog stick pre-pitch?
fuzzone
i never preload. very bad happy. just wait for the pitch -- everyone, even the computer, falls into pitching patterns. so there eventually comes a point when there is no preloading. you know what's coming and u time it. or u could just wait for ur pitch, whatever u think is coming and location. KAuss
Pre-loading is what "waiting for your pitch" is all about... I notice the AI will usually have a pattern but one that is a LOT more mixed up than human players... Then randomly they'll do the 4 pitch walk just for the heck of it... I've played a few games without using the direction on left analog, didn't fare so well... I'll keep trying though...
