My observations on the game after my first 5 series...

I have used rodkey's datafile, and moved the sliders in game to tweak what i could but here is what i find... I play on All-Star as my own custom team.

I average about 1 walk per game. That number is skewed by the # of intentional walks the cpu has thrown me in my first 12 or so games (at least 5).

This lack of walks, is going to throw the stats way off, because i'm going to have my leadoff batter amass 750 at bats if he stays healthy and plays all 162 games.. I'll also wind up with people with 260 hits+.

There is also a severe lack of foul balls. They are present, but gone are the days fo the 15 pitch at bat. Most i have fouled off in 1 at bat is 2.

Pitching has been erattic at best. I turned off the strike zone and left the pitching cursor and hot cold zones (only way im able to get a strike out). I throw 50/50 balls and strikes, mix up speeds and generally give the computer a fair at bat. I get my share of K's, and being the amount of balls i throw, my pitchers have a decent pitch count. BUT... then there comes the 3 innings in the game were Im not paying such attention and i get 9 outs on 9 pitches... grrrrrr.....the hate...

I still cant stand how the runners are thrown out by 400 feet, and the diving catches abound... For a game that has the ability of "hit the ball anywhere at anytime", i see way too many repetative spots in the field. Gappers, gappers, gappers... So far in 15 games i have seen 1 ball hit into the corner (by a cpu batter), and None on the ground down the line. It's like playing baseball in a tunnel. If i make the cpu infielders any Slower, it will be like im playing in the Major Geriatric League... ;)

So overall im having a nice time playing the game as it be... well we really have no choice. I mean graphically the game in untouchable in it's class.. as far as a simulation of real baseball, it has a long long way to go. Can i keep it up for 162 games? Probably, but i dont see my playing a second season in it being that the flaws it has can not be changed with patches. There in the engine itself. So lets look at the yearly count of the games i have had careers in (i have played every one invented and some that never came out as a reviwer/tester etc.. but goes to show u what im yearning for:)

1984-1989 Micro League Baseball (c64)

1990 - Hardball II

1991-1993 Tony Larussa's II

1994-2000 FPS: Baseball Pro

2001-2002 High Heat Series

2003 - None Played (Consider it my strike season... no games of value).

2004-2004 MVP Baseball 2004

2005 ???? May be headed for a second work stoppage. :(

Which version of ROdkey's datafile are you using?

At the moment John E of HH fame and a few others are working on a datafile with pretty good results.

It is of course far from perfect but a lack of baseball games makes this somehow the game of choice if good graphics are something that you are looking for.

We are getting there but I agree it is far from perfect ...however everytime I decide that enough if enough something happens in the game that makes me go WOW and then I promise to give it another try.

We are discovering things about the datafile everyday!

Give us some time we are really making progress.

There is a version of Rod's datafile that makes the pitch counts more realistic but if you bat yourself its kinda hard....it is mroe arcade then and will not be realistic!

Most i have hit was 8 fouls and ended up striking out in the end thanks to a curveball :(

But then in the other hand i havent tried any datafile, and i have played some 80 games(2nd season now)

I feel your pain...

i am a big fan of rodkey's work but i use it mainly for cpu vs. cpu

For the absolute best (imho of course) cpu vs. player you should really try chukj45's datafile. Play on mvp and slow the pitch speed down to -15 or -20... set cpu pitcher fatigue at 40...set user pitcher fatigue at 10...

take your time and play a few games to get used to it - you will definitely see more walks (including walks by user pitcher) and many more foul balls...give it a shot :)

Don't you find that the CPU swings way too much early in the count on MVP level?

The only solution I can offer you NY is to pitch at Pro level (with CPU Power and Contact adjusted) and bat at MVP level (with User Contatc/Power adjusted). You have to switch between every half inning, but I have been getting some pitchers close to 90-100 pitches in the 5th-6th innings (CPU pitchers AND User pitchers) which is ultra-realistic. I also use Kamasutra's Level 3 tweaks (although I have been messing around with chuck's datafile as well).

Yeah, are you still looking into that stuff more?

I have still been trying to figure it out, but with no success. If there is a way, it is beyond me. I would need to help of one of the datafile experts...

chukj45's file is here on mvpmods http://www.mvpmods.com/pafiledb/pafiledb.p...file&id=277

millenium: i agree cpu batters do end up swinging way to much but i find with chuks datafile they are far more likely to foul off pitches towards edge of strike zone rather than just wiffing or getting a clean hit......

also i have my cpu contact and power slider settings at -25 which i believe does increase cpu fouls

btw i think switching between mvp and pro is a brilliant idea! i am definitely going to give that a try

As wacky as it sounds,

try moving back to pro with Rrod7

you can adjust your sliders from there.

I did it on a tip from a fella who i respect a great deal over at another site.

I tried it and am having great results with it.

6-8 hits per game 5-10k's

no cpu comebacks....FINALLY..
