Building A Dynasty - What's Your Approach?

I have started and stopped dynasties several times now - some with the Marlins and some with the Devil Rays. I know there are tons of people here that are simulating dynasties and I had a few questions?

(1) Do you take a particular team as is (i.e. - the Devil Rays roster on opening day or some other point) and start your dynasty from there?

(2) Do you do a fantasy draft from all the available MLB players and put together a 25 man roster and work from that?

(3) Do you allow trades between other teams (CPU) and yourself throughout the season?

(4) Do you play ALL games (MLB, AAA, AA, A), or just the MLB games (or maybe a subset of that)?

Just curious what others are doing ... thanks ...

1. I started w/ the Cubs opening day 2005 roster and simulated from there.

2. I allowed trades between the CPU and myself, because I don't really have a good feel for what the CPU will and won't accept, especially for mediocre players whose salary I'm trying to dump.

3. I play a couple MLB games to get a feel for the roster and sim the rest. I play more Spring Training games than anything else to play with new acquisitions and prospects. Plus, I'll play some playoff games esp. if it looks like we'll win.

Mostly, I'm involved in the GM phase of the game, signing and trading players. It takes me about an hour or so to sim a season because I only sim about a week at a time and adjust lineups, etc. to that. Have fun!

I started with an ultimate roster. I play all games. MLB-A. I try to scour the FA market and pick up anyone that teams release (ive picked up Ryan Harvey and Bill Bray) I feel that if I play every game I get two things at least. My money's worth, and I get a true feel for what every player in my organization is capable of.

1uh, yeah. but if you haven't started you can always do trades right away as if it is still the off season.

2 never. too sacriligious and unrealistic.

3 why not. once you start your season you do not have to have all teams stay the same as if it is real life. the point is to play the game, have fun, and be the GM. What trades would you make, you make. Not what trades that are made in real life = dictating what YOU should do. Free yourself from doing exactly what is happening in real life and just play the game.

4 mlb only. I have a life. And some people have no time for all that nonsense so they only play 41-82 games a year.

Sounds like you're not having fun becaues you're restricting yourself to being just like real life. Just play and do what you want and have fun.

most of the time i simulate to the last month in case im in a playoff chase. if im dead at the bottom or almost definitely get a playoff spot. I simulate the playoffs and play the deciding games ex. if one of the teams can move on with a win. But i always play every game in the World Series. I always go for the big names in the FA market in the off season

On the contrary, I am having a lot of fun, I was just wondering what others do. I usually stop a dynasty because I have realized that my gameplay settings are a little out of whack. I have been trying on pro and all-star with several different slider settings, but am still tweaking them to get them to be a little more realistic. I don't like having the proverbial 15 hits with 2 runs, or having my pitcher's stamina fall to ineffective levels after 4 or 5 innings when he is accustomed to going 7 or 8 innings on a regular basis.

Thanks everyone for their insight. I know everyone's got their own approach ... GM, coach, player ... and I was curious what some of you were doing here ... looking forward to the 2006 mod 8)
