Rangers start '06 strong!

The Rangers blasted easily through spring training with a 19 - 3 record while dominating at the plate and on the mound.

Though that momentum has slowed a little here in the regular season, they have been able to maintain a winning attitude

and strong pitching. Ironically, known for their hitting, it has been a slow start for the offense.

Through April, the Rangers had a 7 game winning streak that carried them to a 16 - 9 record and a half-game lead heading

into May. There were no major injuries at the MLB level but a couple down on the farm have surfaced.

Fact and Figures:

-Bank= $4.08 million in the BANK through April

-Player Payroll= $87.5 million

-12,371 average attendance

Rangers continue steamrolling! - trade Millwood

The Rangers had a HOT HOT HOT May but saw a gentle cool down in June. None-the-less, they surged to a 14 game lead in the AL West as they lead the league in team hitting and are in the top 15 in pitching. Feeling comfortable where they are record wise and talent wise, but not so much budget wise, the Rangers began purging some salaries in an effort to slow the bleeding with the bank account.

Even though they sit 21 games over .500 on the season, the Rangers continue to struggle with drawing in good crowds for home games. Currently, they sit barely over 50% average attendance as their expansion of the stadium from 20,000 capacity to 25,000 has yet to be even necessary as their highest one game attendance has been at about 19,900, and that was back in early May when the Angels were in town.

Thus, their bank funds have slowly been dropping and all the price changes and promotional days seemingly do nothing to slow the decline. The Rangers are said to be bringing in experts to figure out how to turn their fortunes (or is it mis-fortures?) around.

The front office's answers to this were to begin dumping inflated salaries. This started with the trades of unused (2B) D. Jimenez as well as pitching ace (SP) Kevin Millwood. "We like what we are seeing with ALL of our pitching staff as well as what we have at triple-A, and though Kevin will be missed, we felt his $11+ million salary needed to be moved. In exchange, we got an exciting young arm in return from the Reds, Dave Williams, who will have an immediate impact in our starting rotation."

Lucky Turns Up the Heat on the Summer

Lucky started out slow this season but late May and June saw him really get it going as his average improved dramatically from .200 back on May 1st to .302 here on July 1st. Weekly, the Rangers front office is inundated with emails suggesting Lucky be promoted to triple-A to "see what he can do". The Rangers otherwise do NOT want to rush him, especially considering the logjam of talent the Rangers have at their middle-infield positions from MLB down to double-A.

Something to consider soon will be, we can't keep Lucky AND the other great young talent at SS and 2B forever, we must decide soon who will be our guys to man those positions permanently.

Yeah he is a Top 100 prospect...

I have alot of them with some great veterans on my MLB roster so Im not sure what to do with all the prospects, etc...

I guess once a veteran wants tooo much money, make sure I have a great prospect available to take his place

Yah the signing of Adam Dunn and Luis Gonzalez has been key for the offense and the pitching has been good thus far, so Im hoping letting go of Millwood doesnt cost me

RANGERS ON BRINK OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

The playoffs have been full of turbulence, irony, heartbreak, laughter, and crying.... Yes, there IS crying in baseball, especially in the form of elation.

The Rangers entered the playoffs tied with the best record in the major leagues with the New York Mets. Their first opponent was the Chicago Whitesox. Except for game one, when the Rangers won 10 - 2, every game was decided by no more than 2 runs, with the Rangers coming out on top three games to two to move on to the ALCS.

Here, they faced the same challenge as last season, the Minnesota Twins, last season's world champions. This series was nearly identical to last years ALCS, with one major difference - Texas winning game seven to go to the World Series. The Texas Rangers would be headed for what many analysts were predicting late in the regular season - a clash with the other best team in baseball, the New York Mets. Yes, a Mets team who made the World Series last season only to be scorned in 5 games. The Mets would be ready for this one.

The Rangers opened the series with 2 straight wins, both at home. On the road in New York, the Mets came away with their own 2 game winning streak to bring the series even at 2 games a piece. Then they traded wins with the Rangers taking game 5 and the Mets storming back with a 5 run win in game 6.

So now the Rangers and the Mets square off for GAME 7 of the 2006 World Series in Arlington.

Who comes out on top?? Your NEW WORLD CHAMPIONS are.....

Doh! You'll have to stay tuned for an update as this game will be PLAYED!!! We'll bring you pictures and video from the game. STAY TUNED!!!!

RANGERS ON BRINK... (continued)

Welcome to Game 7 of the 2006 World Series where the Texas Rangers host the New York Mets...

06WSkennedyryanfield.jpg

Kennedy Ryan Field - Arlington

Both lineups have great hitting all the way through.... Pitching will be key in this matchup.

06WSbattingorders.jpg

The defensive lineups for both teams... another key.... one team will commit a VERY costly error in this one...

06WSRangersdeflineup.jpg

06WSMetsdeflineup.jpg

The game gets underway with neither team doing much offensively. In the 3rd inning, Zambrano, pitcher for the Mets, walked two batters in a row with two outs in the inning. With Colon on 2nd base and Gonzalez on first, Mark Teixeira hits a single into center field that plates Colon for the first run of the game. Dunn then pops out to end the inning.

06WScolonscores.jpg

Matt Colon scores first run

Going into the bottom of the 4th inning, starting pitcher for the Rangers, knuckleballer Steve Sparks has a perfect game going. With the Rangers up to bat, the Whitesox commit an error that really gives the Rangers a boost. A throwing error by the shortstop, Reyes, allows Texas to load up the bases with only one out. The Rangers would then push across two more runs on consecutive singles before getting stopped with a double play to end the inning.

The Rangers now lead 3 to 0 after 4 innings...

A few innings go by with no noise being made, except by Sparks.

06WSsparkspitches.jpg

Steves Sparks tosses another knuckleball

We have just ended the 7th inning with the score still 3 to 0 in favor of the Rangers. Sparks quickly takes down clean-up hitter Beltran, now facing Floyd, Sparks starts out with a knuckleball to the inside corner for a strike. The next pitch, another knuckleball low and in gets taken to right field...

06WSdelgadobreaksupperfectgame.jpg

... the ball hits off the high right field wall, just short of being a home run. Floyd is held on at first for a long single, breaking up Sparks' perfect game and no-hitter bid 7 1/3 innings into the game. None the less, the crowd gives him a standing ovation. the next batter, (DH) Mohr, gets an infield single when he hits it deep up the middle infield and shortstop Matt Colon's able to stop the ball but not able to throw out either runner in time. With two men on and one out, Sparks proceeds to strikeout the next batter and then end the inning with a fly ball to left field.

The Rangers get two men on in the top of the ninth only to not score another run. We got into the bottom of the ninth with Buck Showalter having a decision to make - let Sparks finish his complete game, or bring in a closer who has not exactly been dominant this season?

06WScorderofor9th.jpg06WScorderofor9tha.jpg

Buck puts his faith in Cordero's hands...

Cordero wastes no time as the helpless Mets' first two hitters are sent down swinging on strikeouts! Then up next, the Mets' last hope to prolong the game and give themselves a chance. After two quick strikes, both on 98 MPH fastballs, Cordero stuffs a forkball in the dirt. The batter starts to swing but checks it... The third base umpire says he didn't go around... Cordero and the Rangers, knowing they were inches away from a strikeout, exhales with anticipation. Rangers' infielders can be heard giving Cordero support.

Cordero steps onto the rubber. Gets his sign from catcher Gerald Laird. At the start of the ninth, Showalter had decided to empty his bench to allow all his fielders a chance to play. He put Laird in for Barajas, DeRosa in for second baseman Luis Gonzalez, and Kevin Mench in for rightfielder Nix (leftfielder Dellucci had pinch hit for barajas in the bottom of the eighth).

Cordero accepts the sign from Laird. He takes in a deep breath. Cordero winds....

Yah it was. Feel guilty since I know the Rangers never have been that good in real life and all (not sure they ever will be :( - ACK!!) but I guess the sim engine has mercy on me or something, lol.

Adam Dunn obviously turned out to be HUGE this season for us with him being league MVP and all.

Thanks for reading along and commenting - makes it worth while.

Offseason upcoming shortly - due to playoffs, we got some MONEY!! :)

Gosh, Im not sure just yet. Not even certain as to who is due a new contract on our team, etc.... been engrossed in this season quite heavily I guess.

I'd say my goal is to keep my offense intact, as well as most of my pitching staff - Im hoping there may be one big pitching FA that I can grab this offseason, BUT I have proven that I dont HAVE TO HAVE a Top 5 pitcher in the league... My team scored about 1010 runs this season, if I can continue to do that, great pitching isnt as necessary...

Lucky will likely get moved up to AAA. His contract is up now so I will have to resign him.... Im afraid he MAY want big money AND demand to be in the MLB, if that's the case, Im not sure what Ill do.

Also, I am looking to add the next level of seating ($10mil I think) to the stadium, even though I never get close to filling up our 25,000 seats until it is mid to late September....

I just did searches on this forum for things like "set prices/pricing". Mainly all the tips refer to setting your prices according to your "impact" of who youre playing next as well as setting all your PROMOTIONAL DAYS (50 - 60 promotional days) before you play your first game so you dont have to worry about adding them later on when you are hurting for cash but you can't add any since youre in debt - good to get that out of the way before hand.

Also, you really need to look at your % of sales for EVERYTHING during and after each home series so you know what is working and what isnt and you can make your tweaks accordingly. If you look hard enough, youll find some threads here by people who have a specific "formula" they follow to determine prices each series.

Rangers' Rollercoaster '07; Make BIG Trade Again

The Rangers have had an up and down season so far, but as of late have been seeing the good side of things.

April started our fairly well as they went 16 - 10 and shared the lead with the Athletics. May saw the Rangers go 12 - 13 to find themselves 4 1/2 games behind the division leading Athletics on June 1st, with a record of 28 - 23. After that, we wought some changes to the lineups and noticed that we were'nt getting much production out of our #1 and 2 guys in the batting order and moved some things around. June, was much more kind to us after that.

Texas was steamrolling through June but dropped 4 of their 5 remaining games in the month to give them a 19 - 8 record for June, but see them take over first place again. We simmed 8 more games to go ahead and get us to the All-Star game - we went 6 - 2 in that stretch to lengthen our lead a little. So now, at the All-Star break, the Rangers hold a three game lead over the strong and consistent Oakland Athletics.

In other news, the All-Star break also saw a couple of BIG changes as Texas looks to build for the stretch run. First, Texas signed free agent relief pitcher Matt Lindstrom to a 3 year deal and slotted him in as a middle reliever. The Rangers also placed several players on the trade block, including (RF) Kevin Mench in an effort to hopefully find a more permanent solution at Catcher. Thus far, the Rangers have fielded no serious offers.

But what the Rangers did do, in a direct response to their lack of ability to steal bases, is go out and get talented yet unused center fielder Juan Pierre from the Chicago Cubs. The Rangers orginally expressed interest in the Cubs' (CF) Cory Patterson and was willing to send (CL) Juan Rincon in exhange with the notion of bringing up triple-A (CL) F. Cabrera to take his spot - Cabrera has been very dominant at triple-A Oklahoma. But with Juan Pierre being in Chicago since the start of 2005 season and not playing but in 15% of their games (Patterson is CF starter), the Rangers went for Pierre instead - he has the speed and hitting contact ability to really complement the team well. With this move, CF/RF Lance Nix and (RF) Kevin Mench will see even more reduced playing time as we have moved Brad Wilkerson from center field to right field, thus making Mench expendable.

The trade:

Rangers send talented youth in (SP) Kameron Loe and (2B) Ian Kinsler to the Cubs for (CF) Juan Pierre and triple-A (RP) prospect D. Aardsma. In the end, we likely overspent in this deal, but Loe was caught up in a logjam of young starting pitching talent and Kinsler wasn't going anywhere with Luis A. Gonzalez playing 2B for the Rangers.

Texas Rangers Post Season report!

Rangers set team record for wins (again)!

The Rangers used the months of June, July, and September to blast their way to setting another club record for wins in a season with 106. Mostly due to hitting as usual, though this season was helped more so by pitching than any other for the team - a team that scored about 30 runs less this season than last season, but also saw its baserunning numbers pick up as well.

The Rangers find themselves playing the Twins in the playoffs for what is now the third straight season. Other teams involved are familiar foes Chicago Whitesox and New York Yankees, as well as the Mets (N.L. World Series resp last two seasons).
