Having Trouble installing G Force Video card..............

NYM

Recommended Posts

I just got my new video card today (G Force FX 5500). I got it in the PCI slot and I turned on my computer and everythings ok. Here's the problem. When I insert the CD disk to install it I keep getting this problem. It should be saying "PNY G FORCE FX 5500". Why is it not showing up? Here's what I mean:

Did you disable the onboard intergrated graphics? Also, are you sure you plugged all the cables into the correct ports inside your computer?

My video card came out of the slot. I didnt know I had to disable it. I only got one plug. It its circular at the end and it plugs into the part of the video card outside the computer.

Ok I installed it through the disk, but the game still looks the same. I dont know wat Im doing wrong. Hollywood you have the same exact thing as me. DId you get any plugs or wires in the package with the video card?

Theres this one wire but I dont know what it does. It plugs into the outsie of the computer where the video card is, but I dont know where the other half of the plug goes too.

Are you plugging the monitor into the new video card? (From what I read it doesn't seem like it)

Make sure the card is firmly in place.

Did you disable the old integrated graphics card? This should be done in the BIOS. To access the BIOS, you should be prompted to push "Del" (delete key) to access the "Setup" (or something similar). If you're not prompted, just keep pressing the "Del" key. Then you should be in your BIOS menu... Be VERY careful what you mess with and make sure you don't change anything that's not needed. Look around the menu for something like integrated graphics or built-in graphics or on-board graphics...change it to "Disabled" if it says "Enabled"...save changes and exit.

Again, if you're not sure about the BIOS and have never configured it, be sure to do some research on the web or in your manual for your computer. What I told you should be similar to what you have to do, but it might not.

If he install the card correctly and have the latest driver, the biggest difference without integrated graphics is U won't get bright player when helmet reflection is on. And U get better frame rate when playing. Since this is PCI I don't expect it to run perfectly smooth. But anything is better than intel stuff.

Im not expecting it to look great, but I can still see through the players.

Eber I didn't try plugging the video card into the monitor. I found where I plug it into the video card, but I dont know where it plugs into the monitor.

NYM91, it sounds like you physically removed your old card and inserted the new one in its place. Is that correct?

I am wondering, that screenshot shows that your card could not be found. Could it be that you have not installed the drivers for the card yet? If so, do it now.

I would recommend downloading the latest drivers from NVIDIA's website. I don't recommend installing the drivers that come on the cd. If any bugs exist companies usually work them out and post updated drivers on their websites. The cds are rarely if ever up to date.

Best of luck. I have a very similar card (same chipset, different manufacturer) and the game looks great.

First, I think that is your biggest problem. The monitor and the PCI card need to be connected--that explains why your graphics are still the same.

The monitor needs to be hooked up to the port I circled. The round port (I think) is some type of TV-out or S-video and that is the wrong one to connect to your monitor.

There should only be a power cable and a vga connector to your monitor. Disconnect the vga cable from your computer (I'm assuming it's on the original integreated graphics port) and connect that to the PCI card. Be sure you do what I said in my previous post.

And also, before you do any of this, does the computer recognize that the card is there? That is, when you start up windows, does a pop-up occur in the taskbar that says something like "New Hardware Found"? If not, that means that the PCI card isn't fully seated or "pushed in" all the way. FIRMLY push it in...it may seem like it's in the slot but it might not be...

Edit: I think this is more similar or is your specific card:

B0002YY9RO.01-A9B09ZK9BZJQ6.PT03._SCLZZZ

Well anyway, it should be the port pictured on the left.

NYM, a piece of advice. If you want to do this type of thing, make perfectly sure you know exactly what you're doing before going out and buying the hardware, then having trouble installing it. If you don't know what you're doing, read up on it, or get a qualified technician to install it.

Just don't go in blind, because there is a good chance you'll just end up with a PC that's FUBAR.

I had a pretty good idea of what I was doing. I followed every step. I missed one but fixed that. The manual told me exactly what I had to do and I did it. Everything is set up excpet for the thing Eber circled.

That's my next poit. Eber, that is what im talking about. I plugged my plug into the video card. The problem is I don't know where it goes. That's where I'm going in blind. Maybe Hollywood can told me where he plugged in that because I have no clue at all, plus he has the same computer.

Right. Read up on a tutorial. It's hard from our perspective to tell what you have and haven't done correctly. Just Google "how to install a pci video card"...brings up some ok results.

Even better, if you have a digital camera, post pictures of the cords coming out of your monitor and the back of your computer and I or someone else can circle and label what goes where. I still don't understand the trouble you're having with which cables go where. There should only be one other cable from your monitor (besides the power cable) and that one now goes from where it is (or was) connected on your computer to the new video card.

Eber, I got a question. The two wires coming out of the monitor, one plugs into the tower so it turns on, and the other one screws into the tower. It's the one where there's two screws on the side and you screw it in. Do I put that one in my video card?

P.S. Thanks to Mark and Kc I now know what FUBAR is. You learn a lot of things when installing a video card.

This is from a post at the dell web site by SmoochyTX

Following are the steps I took to successfully install the VisionTek Xtasy 9100 128MB PCI video card.

1. Disable integrated graphics. (Start - Right click on My Computer - Properties. In the System Properties menu, go to the Hardware tab. Click on Device Manager. Double click on Display Adapters. Double click on Intel®82845G.....controller. On the General Tab, disable the device.)

It will prompt you to restart your computer. Power off your computer instead.

2. Install the PCI card. (Turn off your surge protector unplug all of your computer hardware from it. Unplug the power source from the back of the computer. Remove the case and place the computer on its side. Install the PCI card. Put the case back on the computer. Plug everything back into the surge protector and plug the power source back into the back of the computer.

**** Important - Unplug your monitor from the integrated graphics on the back of your computer and plug it into the PCI card that is now installed. ****

3. Turn on your surge protector and power up your computer.

4. Change BIOS settings from integrated to PCI. (At the Dell logo screen, press F2 to go into your BIOS. If you were not quick enough on this start just power down and try again. Right arrow over to the Advanced tab. Arrow down to Peripheral Configuration. Press Enter. Arrow down to Primary Video Adapter. Press Enter. Arrow up to choose PCI. Press Enter. Press ESC. Right arrow over to Exit. Exit Saving Changes. 'Y' for Yes.)

Your computer should now be starting up. Your desktop will look strange because the screen resolution settings have been lowered. Leave that alone for now.

The 'Found New Hardware' wizard will appear. If you are on XP, click Cancel.

5. Insert the VisionTek CD that came with the card into your CD or DVD drive. If the program starts after putting it in the drive, just follow the directions onscreen to install. If the program does not start up, then go to Start - Run - choose the drive your CD is in - find the Setup file and run it. (I chose the Express install which installs the ATI Display Driver, ATI Control Panel, Hydravision, and DirectX 9.0. The Custom installation will allow you to deselect any of the options except for the Display Driver. According to the FAQ's on this card, you do NOT need to install the ATI Control Panel and Hydravision for the card to work properly. Those are programs that add extra options for you but are not necessary for functionality.)

After installation is complete, you will be asked if you want to restart your computer now or restart later. Restart your computer now.

After restarting, you can change your resolution settings to where you would like them to be. You can also check the box on the ATI Control Panel to keep it from popping up on every restart (which I did...LOL).

And you're done!
