Double Switch

Can someone explain what a double switch is? I see this option when I go to pinch hit for my pitcher late in the game and keep forgetting to ask what it means (and when is a good time to use it). Thanks!

A double switch is kinda complicated, but here goes..i'll try to explain it as simple as possible.

Say you're the Diamondbacks, In the 7th inning you have Randy Johnson coming up third, but you know he's tired, and you're gonna use a reliever in the 8th. You replace Randy Johnson in the lineup with your Pinch Hitter, but then you substitute someone else in the field with your new pitcher, who you know will not likely make it to the plate this inning.

After that, when you go to the next inning, you have to make some switches, moving the new pitcher to the mound, and re-aligning the defense to make sure that everyone is in a position they can play fairly easy.

I hope this helps, but its a tricky thing to explain without seeing it happen...and to me, its not very useful. More confusion than good, but you can try it if you wanna

Basically you pinch hit two guys at once.

The true pinch hitter bats for the pitcher (#9 spot). He will usually stay and field.

Then if that pinch hitter is staying in the game to field, you find his corresponding position and "pinch hit" the new pitcher in that position (usually #8 spot in the lineup).

Just make sure that you don't put the pitcher in the #1 - #4 spot in case he has to bat the very next inning.

One thing to look out for, in the game, once you substitute the new pitcher in the line up, he will stop warming up. So if the pitcher is leading off the inning (batting first) and you just got your bullpen up, you won't have time to do a double switch.
