Editing Uniform Numbers

I want to swap uniform numbers between teams, at different levels. This is a personal project of mine, bringing my favorite Total Classics teams into the Majors for season play.

I am using a "normal" MVP05 as a base, exporting and importing teams from Total Classics, bringing in the TC models.big and portrait.big files.

My only hitch is uniforms. For example, I have placed the 2001 D'backs in "slot 014" (the D'backs usual numbers for logos and uniforms, as I understand it). But in Total Classics, #14 is the 1950 Phillies. So when I play the D'backs, they have the right portraits and faces, but are wearing Phillies uniforms.

When I try to use BIGGui to edit uniform numbers, I get a crash. I open models.big with BIGGui. Then I use Rename to change the numbers I need. For example, the D'backs uniforms are at 111 in Total Classics, so I just switch uniform numbers 014 and 111. I do this for all 'u' and 'f' and 'a' files, which I believe are all the uniforms.

No luck. I think there is more file-editing to be done, but I tried searching and could not find more information.

Two other questions about BigGUI ... 1) when do you "rebuild," and when do you not?

and 2) I'm having trouble telling whether all the .fsh files in the .big files have to be compressed or not. Is that part of my problem? Do they have to be compressed to work? It seems not, since when I look at Original Game Files with BIGGui, not all the .fsh's are compressed.
