Installation Issue - Please Help Out A Newbie

I purchased my game today from Compusa. I put in the CD and it started up the installation. However, when it started to copy files I got the following error:

"A problem occurred when trying to transfer the file datamodels.big from the media"

I hit retry and it just brings up the same error.

I have already tried copying the files to my HD and running the install from there. I get the same error.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a damaged/defective CD. Does it have any visible damage, or smudges on it? You may need to return it.

There are some apps out there that may help determine the source of the problem and might be able to extract the information...

IIRC one is called "CD Check"??? not sure.

Thanks for the reply and ideas. I figured out the problem. I have a bad CD-ROM drive. It is a nice Plextor too that came with my rig from Falcon-Northwest. I called them up and they sent me a new unit in one day! Great people over there at Falcon. I installed the new CD-ROM drive (actually it is a DVD-R/RW) and the game installed no problem. I have been playing a lot. The mods here are just great. I am speechless. I will be making a financial donation to the site to show my appreciation soon.

Thanks,

I did a quick search, and couldn't find anything, thought maybe readers of this thread could help.

Is it possible to play the game solely from the PC Hard Drive?

I am prepared to buy a used copy, but the second disk, which I assume you would play from if you weren't playing from the hdd, is in poor condition. I know I always had to have the second disc in the drive when I played MVP 04, but didn't know if there was a workaround for 05 (or 04 for that matter).

If you have to have disc in, can it be a copy of the second disc? Thanks in advance for any replies.
