kick-in-the-ass.jpg

I like to imagine Y4L sitting around in his powdered wig, just waiting to kick someone.

Actually, looking at the URL for the picture, it's apparently Mozart getting his *** kicked. Better company than most people who have seen this picture here deserved.

I haven't downloaded a file in a couple weeks, but I have a 15mbps connection so I'd expect my downloads to come at 600KB/s

you have fiber vdsl??? that's a quick connection man 50% faster than cable will ever go. i wish at&t would hurry up and bury fiber lines in my area, i'll be off cable in a heartbeat.

im not exactly sure what mine is... my family has cable, shared through a wireless router over several computers... so my wireless connection says 54 mbps, but i dont know if im actually running at that or not... i think i might be connected to the cable at 54 Mb/s, but stuck at cable's max... if anyone knows anything about this kind of stuff, feel free to inform me :)

I dont know if this is similar to your setup or not, but I'm connected to a LAN. the host computer gets 100 mbps, and my computer is connected wirelessly to a linksys router. My computer normally gets 50 mbps, but it recently dropped to about 43 mbps and is now down to 36. I also updated my drivers a while back and it has really helped perfromance.

dslreports.com goto tools, then speed test. That will tell you really how fast you should be going.

Here's a link

http://www.dslreports.com/stest

cubs and jhath you don't get those speeds for downloads. Just thought you'd like to know.

I have a LAN, will this test still work?

I did it anyway and this is what I got:

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-08-15 18:52:47 EST:

196 / 503

Your download speed : 196 kbps or 24.5 KB/sec.

Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked?

Your upload speed : 503 kbps or 62.9 KB/sec.

PS: Welcome to dslreports.com! Run more tests! see forums

LOL! exactly guys. you're NUTS! ESPECIALLY on a wireless connection! the fastest physical speed a coax cable wire can push data is 10mbps. copper wire can push 100mbps. fiber 1gbps. now considering fiber lines for VDSL which can carry speeds UP TO 48 mbps are still very rare how can you be cruising along at 50 or 100mbps? you're seeing port speeds or the speed that you can THEORETICALLY transfer files within your little home network. of course THEORETICALLY is the key word here.

i have a 6mbps cable connection and that as it stands right now for most home connections is blazing fast. run the test at dsl reports or speakeasy.net and you'll see that you're probably connecting between 1-4mbps maybe less if your totally wireless.

essentially your download speed is about 4 times than dial up in plain english. huge difference from the 30 mbps you thought you had.

again anyone with cable- MAX speed on a cable network connection is 10mbps. the main reason businesses did away with coax cable years ago and went to copper. what most people don't realize is that cable is almost maxed already. dsl (copper and fiber) is only just beginning. the only way for cable to even com close to compete is to install fiber links and all that will do is drive up their already bloated prices.

i use cable for now because here it's faster than dsl right now. once at&t finishes the fiber lines cable internet will be obsolete.

mmmhhmm...fiber optics sounds tasty.

I have considered getting a cable connection but overall, its shakey being I live in a city and the connection (from talking to friends) for cable is about the same in the evening when all the other subscribers are on.

SBC does an alright job, and own the market due to their competive pricing which I hope sets a precedent to get cable, and future connections to offer more reasonable prices. We'll see its a competive market so I'm sure something's gotta give.

eventually it will drop in price and increase in speed and cable will be the dial up of the future. japan which had the sense to wire almost the WHOLE country mainly in fiber optics YEARS ago is the example they are shooting for. the standard connection in japan is dsl at 100mbps dl speed. cable internet is unheard of and dial up costs more than the 100mbps connection because dial up would only be able an option for someone very remote and actually cost more for the telco to implement for them... for 100mbps in japan last i read it cost around $25 per month.

anyhow next time you hear someone slag DSL just laugh.

Cable is worth it. I pay about $38 a month and I have lighting speed. I love 100 mbps. It's so fast that I can even go 54 wireless and still have good download speeds of about 100-300 per download, but depending on what. This site is the only thing that gives me issues. The site itself is not bad anymore, but the downloads were coming in UBER SLOW. Now they are coming in at around 60-80 kbps, and I can easily live with that.

lol it said my download speed was 300 somethin... but then why do i consistently download from some sites well above 500??? I just put a new firewall up and it was blocking all kinds of stuff so maybe that had to do somethin with it...

Me too, I think it depends on the server that you are downloading stuff from though, kinda what the issue with this site is, its all dependant on them. The only thing that is determined by your isp is the max speed.

you don't have a 100 mbps cable internet connection. it's physically impossible. you must mean 100kbps.
