Team Breakdown

Catcher: Paul LoDuca

With the loss of Mike Piazza, the Mets were looking for an offensive and defensive catcher. What they found was Paul LoDuca. No he won't put up 40 homeruns, but he will get the job done.

First Basemen: Carlos Delgado

Delgado was one of the best off-season moves. He is no Doug M. at fielding, but will get the job done. Any errors on the field, he will surely make up with the bat.

Second Base: Kaz Matsui

Yes, Matui returns again for the 2006 season. Since that first pitch homerun against Russ Ortiz to kick off the 2004 season, it's been down hill since then. He has not lived up to his expectations and this is most likely his last couple of months with the Mets unless he does something to change GM Omar Minayas Mind.

Third Base: David Wright

David Wright has been nothing less than spectacular since appearing late in the July 2004 season. In the past 2005 season he led the team in BA and RBI's. His fielding has improved and the Mets look for him to give this Mets club a boost for the 2006 season.

Short Stop: Jose Reyes

One of the fastest in all of Major League Baseball, Jose Reyes is a spark to the Mets. With a low OBP he managed to steal 50+ bases. If he can get on base more, with sluggers like Beltran, Delgado, Wright, and Floyd, Reyes can be one of the most deadly forces on the field.

Left Field: Cliff Floyd

With a career year last year, Floyd looks to repeat what he did in 2005. Not only did he show of his bat, but also his glove. Floyd will be key for this team to do good in the 2006 season.

Center Field: Carlos Beltran

Last year was definitly a dissapointment for the Mets center fielder. Injuries plagued Beltran throughout most of the first half of the 2005 season and the injury with Cameron in August made Beltrans production even worst. Admitting the New York crowd got to him, he has improved himself to become a better player on the field and at the plate.

Right Field: Xavier Nady

GM Omar Minaya puzzled Mets fans in the offseason when he traded Mike Cameron to San Diego for Xavier Nady. Most fans think it was a salary dump, some people think Omar went crazy, most fans, still puzzled. But Xavier Nady is a good young player that can bring offense to this Mets club for many years.

Left: Carlos Delgado hits his first HR as a Met- Right: The Nationals Celebrate as they beat the Mets in the season opener.

The Mets kicked off the 2006 season with high hopes. With the new acquisitions of Carlos Delgago and Billy Wagner, the Mets got the offense and defense they needed. In the first inning Beltran hit a solo shot to give the Mets a 1-0 lead, but Vidro tied it up in the third with a solo shot of his own. Hernandez helped out his own cause by driving in Soriano to make it 2-1 and Vidro added two more in the to increase the lead by three. Floyd answered back with a solo shot of his own, and in the bottom of the sixth Beltran and Delgado went back to back to give the Mets a boost. But, in the 7th, Vidro shut down the Mets as he hit another HR gaining his fourth RBI of the day. Cordero shut the Mets out in the ninth to dissapoint the Mets on opening day.

After the game Pedro Martinez was interviwed: "Today was a dissapointment for Mets fans. I was given the ball, and I let my teamates down. I never gave them a change to get into the game. Whenever they [Mets] scored for me, I would give up two more runs. Today was a bad day and everyone has them. Just don't expect to see one from me again."

Hitting Performance: Beltran 3-4, 2HR (2), 2R (2), 2RBI (2), Delgado 3-4, 1HR (1), 1 RBI (1)

Pitching Performance: Sanchez 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R

To me the presentation is great. That shot of Delgado's HR is awesome. And I like the shot of the Nats walking off the field victorious...yes part of it is because I don't like the Mets, but I like the closure of the shot. Good summary of the game in just those two photos. Perhaps you could post the box score, if possible.

Just one more thing...my 2 cents....

I would move Beltran into the two hole and Wright into the 3 spot. He's going to the Mets 3 hitter someday and may be there somepoint this season anyway...with a solid veterans like Delgado and Floyd behind him he'd won't get pitched around. Although this would break up the lefty-righty-lefty you have in the middle of your lineup.

I just like Wright a lot...yuck...I hate saying good things about the Mets...but this kid is a true ball player.

Hit LoDuca 6th or seventh. No lower because he's a good enough hitter that if you put him 8th, he will get pitched around to get to the picther in most cases.

WASHINGTON STUNS THE METS, AGAIN

Patterson (0-0) vs. Glavine (0-0)

Left: Wright celebrates after hitting a homerun Right: Delgado flips to Glavine after a diving catch

After a dissapointing loss to the Nationals on Opening Day, the Mets turned to Tom Glavine to get them their first win of the season. In the first inning things were already going wrong for the Mets. Church hit a two RBI double to give the Gnats the early 2-0 lead. In the fourth Soriano added onto that lead with a RBI single. The Mets offense was dull until Wright hit a moonshot to left field sparking the Mets, but the Gnats struck back adding on more runs as they shut down the Mets 5-1.

After the game Willie Randolph was interviewed: "Today was some bad baseball. We have to play smallball and not depend on the longball every game. Wright provided us with a spark in the 7th, but we couldn't feed of it. Our pitching isn't good and we have to improve on that as well. If we want to win as a team, we are going to have to play as a team."

Hitting Performance: Wright 2-4, 1R, 1RBI, HR

Pitching Performance: Glavine 7 IP, 7H , 5 R, 1 SO

I like it. Good job but how about giving a boxscore. Maybe something like the following....

Box6.jpg

I'll include that in my upcoming series with the Marlins.

Lawrence (0-0) vs. Heilman (0-0)

Left: The benches clear as Delgado charges the mound. Right: Valentin crosses home plate for the winning run.

With the Mets losing the first two games to the Nationals, the Mets turned to Heilman, who didn't give the Mets the start they wanted. In the first inning Church hit a three run shot to give the Gnats a 3-0 lead. That lead wouldn't last long as Delgado answered back with a three run shot of his own tying the game at three apeice. Going into the fourth the Gnats were up 6-3 when Delgado hit his second homerun of the game making it 6-4. Down 8-5 in the seventh, Delgado came through again with a two run double driving in Reyes and LoDuca. Going into the ninth down 8-7, Beltran stepped up to the plate and hit a monster homerun to tie it 8-8. With Delgado stepping up to the plate, Cordero hit him, and Delgado charged the mound. Delgado got ejected and Valentin took his spot. With Valentin on second, Floyd hit a gapper which drove in Valentin for the winning run.

After the game Delgado was interviwed: We played good as a team today. Our pitching was shaky, but our offense picked up the slack. I'm proud of the way we played today, and I hope we can play like this for the remaining 159 games. When we play like this, no one, and I mean no one, can beat us. [Delgado did not comment on his brawl with Cordero]

Hitting Performance: Beltran 3-5, RBI, 3 R, HR, Delgado 4-4, 2 R, 6 RBI, 2 HR

Pitching Performance: Zambrano 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 SO

Mets Hot Stove Report

The Florida Marlins visit the Mets tommorow, and the Mets will see some familiar faces. Mike Jacobs was included in a trade that brought Carlos Delgado to New York. The Mets look to feed off the win versus the Nationals, and put the NL East away early.
