Millennium
Go A's! Oakland just acquired Octavio in a deal that moved Beltran to the Stro's So, just to get this straight, you are replacing one former dominant set-up man who proved he doesn't have the mental make-up to close with another former dominant set-up man who is currently proving he doesn't have the mental make-up to close? AND you gave up one of your top positional prospects in the process?
ee
What kills me is why Oakland didn't keep Beltran for themselves. They lose Mike Wood, and Mark Teahen to get Dotel. If they would have thrown in a Catcher (Mike Rose?) and had Beltran for the year. Instead, they get Dotel. Sure they have Kotsay, Byrnes, Dye... but hell, let Kotsay hit off the bench and move Beltran in.
schitonk
oakland couldnt have kept beltran after signing chavez and zito, mulder AND hudson coming up FA's soon. Beltran, if houston doesn't resign him, will be a yankee next year.
GoodyBucs
Having watched 80% of the A's games (thank you Lord for DirecTV) their biggest hole has EASILY been the weak sister bullpen. They have been scoring their usual 4.1 runs per game, but have blown 15 saves... I for one am VERY happing getting a quality arm for the pen. This moves everyone back one slot. Rhodes is now setup with Bradford. Crappy Mecir moves back to mop-up, this works out well!
ee
I definitely agree that the A's need bullpen help - I just don't see Dotel being much "help". The way I see it they chose Dotel over Beltran (in a sense), and that's just not a good choice. And yes, I know Beltran wouldn't have been on the A's next year. Beltran is absolutely rental this year.
RobMac
in my very limited knowledge of the clubs involved... heres my 2 cents... oakland is a pitching club with very high quality starters... and if your gonna be a pitching club then having a bullpen that gives up runs defeats the object of having the good starters... so if dotel can have some scoreless innings (which appears to be the actual issue here) then its a great deal for oakland
Kriegz
A's definately filled thier need with bullpen in that trade but look at houston. Name one good pitcher they have in the pen now :|
ee
Well, since you said "name one": Brad Lidge. But had you said "name two", I wouldn't be able to answer you. ;)
Kriegz
After Brad Lidge they don't have much, but they did beef up thier lineup even more, it was a good trade for all teams pretty much whatever way you look at it. I think the astros got the lowest end because Beltran is a one-season rent. He will be gone after this season to NY..sigh :(
RobMac
ive heard talk that because the astros are going to let a couple of their outfielders go (or wade out to pasture) they will have the money freed up to make a real bid at keeping him... it will have to be a very good one though, i hear the agent is a real ***** heh... and it wouldnt be in their interests to strike a franchise crushing deal ala: peyton manning
Wolverineman
I realize the Astros wanted another bat but trading away one of the two people in their bullpen who is worth anything seems dumb. Even if their starting pitching holds up(definatelly not a sure thing) and their offense scores them enough runs, they'll have a hell of a time getting the ball to Lidge in the 9th. Not that I'm complaining or anything, but I just can't quite figure it out.
