It went well early with a runner on 3rd, Jay Payton hit a chopper for in infield single to score the run and take a 1-0 lead. Danny Haren was unbelievable on the mound, but he ran out of gas late and had some trouble with control. He got out of a jam in the 7th, but Ken Macha pulled a Dusty Baker and left his young starter in a few hitters too long, getting the A's into trouble in the 8th. With 2 on and 1 out, Luis Castillo drew a walk, and Jason Tyner tripled past the glove of Mark Kotsay to send home 3 runs and take a 4-1 lead for the Twins. The A's couldn't muster anything in the 9th off Joe Nathan to lose their 7th of 8 games to open the season. Clubhouse Talk: Macha: "I don't regret leaving Danny in there. He was giving us a great outing and he had some left in the tank." Right: The boys celebrate the 7-1 win. WP: Esteban Loaiza (1-1) LP: Carlos Silva (0-1) Box: R H E OAK 7 16 1 MIN 1 9 0 The A's knew coming into this game that they had to get the bats going early, but nobody knew they'd be on fire like they were today. Dan Johnson started it off in the 2nd with a single to score Frank Thomas, then with 2 on Jay Payton hit a bomb to the centerfield wall for a 3-run homer to put the A's up 4-0. With the score 4-1, the A's went on a 6 hit run in the 4th inning to put the A's up 7-1, with Marco Scutaro, Bobby Crosby, and Eric Chavez all picking up RBI's. Esteban Loaiza got into some fireworks in the 6th when he hit Luis Castillo with a pitch. Castillo charged the mound, but not many punches were thrown, and he was tossed from the game, while Loaiza remained. He left after 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 run, while striking out 4 and walking 2. Jay Witasick pitched the last 2 with the bench players getting some action behind him, and the game finished 7-1 A's. WP: Kyle Waldrop (1-1) LP: Justin Duchscherer (1-1) S: Joe Nathan (4) Box: R H E OAK 6 11 0 MIN 7 11 0 The A's bats got hot early on again in this game, with Frank Thomas getting it started on a solo home run. Jason Kendall single home a run a couple outs later, and then Bobby Crosby sent home 2 to give the A's an early 4-0 lead. It's actually an acronym but I don't know what all the letters stand for.
