New Mets Ballpark

I know mod requests are totally obnoxious, but I just do not have the talent to do it. Does anyone with serious stadium modding wherewithall (which probably means Pirate, b/c new Busch is awesome) have any interest in taking on the new Mets stadium, due in 2009? There's a pretty detailed rendering at http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/nym...rk_overview.jsp.

If anyone were to do this, i would worship at their altar.

Just sayin.

Thanks all.

Another cool mod would be to have the current Shea Stadium with construction of the new stadium going on in the background (kind of like in Cincinnati from the High Heat Series, when they were building their new stadium). We could use that until we get to the 2009 season in MVP, then move over to the new stadium if that mod is made.

Doesnt matter if they build a new park, the only time the Mets fans show up to support their team is when they are winning. Mets fans are the fairest of the fair weather fans. If the Mets are 15 back in June, like usual, new stadium or no new stadium expect 8,000-12,000 there for games.

All of a sudden this year there seems to be alot more Met fans in the city, I even see some some in the Bronx! Direct relation to win loss percentage. All those brand new NY Mets hats and jerseys will be back in the bottom of the closet as soon as the June swoon begins...

I see the new stadium is going to front the area that now contains about what 200 body/chop shops. Unless that whole area is rezoned with destinations other then Shea expect the stadium too just replace the eyesore that occupies that area now.

Moliter, thank you for stating the obvious.

Yes, when a team is winning, and the Mets are the best team in NYC right now, people are going to go to the games.

Well, the same thing can be said for the Yankee's (or 90% of the major league teams for that matter). Sure each NY team has their die hards, but the majority New York fans support who ever is winning. When the Mets were winning division titles in the 80's and the Yankees' stunk, no one supported the Yankees either.

This caught my attention, so I decided to take a look at it. We know that all teams see an attendance boost from playing well. Teams also get a boost from playing in a new park. In fact, looking at the last ten years of data, I ran a linear regression, which found that a team's per-game home attendance can be described by the equation: -12711 + 36398*W% + 46395*PrevW% + 6819*New Park , where W% is the team's winning pct, PrevW% is the winning pct for the previous year, and New Park is a binary variable, with 1 indicating a new park and 0 indicating the same park. As you can see, a team with a new park can expect almost 7,000 extra fans per game.

Teams that exceed this projection can be said to have particularly loyal fans, and teams that do not meet it have more fair-weather fans. These are the results for average extra attendance per game over the last 10 years:

Team Attendance

BAL 11603

COL 11180

LAN 8349

ARI 8291

CHN 7538

SLN 5671

SEA 4812

TEX 4057

CLE 3410

NYA 3366

SDN 2033

NYN 1677

ANA 768

SFN 598

DET 407

HOU -326

MIL -613

BOS -1204

TBA -1330

CIN -2437

ATL -2642

PHI -2730

PIT -2917

KCA -3178

TOR -3213

CHA -7948

MIN -8026

FLO -8248

OAK -9811

MON/WAS -11915

Baltimore and Colorado seem to draw fans no matter what while, as we might have expected, the Expos couldn't get anyone to the ballpark. Washington exceeded expectations by 2,200 fans per game last year, so that seems to be changing.

Anyway, according to this, Mets fans are right in the middle of the pack in team loyalty. We might not be as loyal as O's or Rockies fans, but we're certainly a pretty faithful bunch.

In fact, since going to the series in 2000, Mets fans have suffered through some awful years, and still gone to the park. Here are the numbers for the last five years:

2001 186

2002 8232

2003 2936

2004 6369

2005 8667

Remember, that's a PER GAME average, and it ranks 8th in baseball over that time period. Point being, Mets fans show up at the park, win or lose, at a higher rate than the majority of major league fans.

Now, I don't know who your favorite team is, though I'm guessing from your SN it's maybe the Brewers? It doesn't really matter. But I hope you'll realize that Mets fans love their team, and turn out at Shea (one of the worst stadiums in the game, it's worth noting) to root for the team they love.

Best,

Seth
