Career Potential

Before I start off here, I shall say that I used the search function of these forums and came up with bupkiss, so I apologize if this is a frequent question around here.

Hi there folks. I was checking out the new ultimate rosters on my MVP with the 06 mod and I was thinking of playing a Dynasty. Now, one of the things that has confused me a little bit is the concept of career potential. I know when you create a player (anyone out here create themselves? :) ) you give him a career potential between one star and up to five stars. Also every player already has their own set career potential rating.

This is what I have noticed...

Future hall of famers like Roger Clemens, and Mike Piazza usually have a five star rating.

Good players like career .280 - .300+ hitters, very good pitchers, and top 100 prospects have four typically.

Average players and lots of minor leaguers who might make it to the show according to the scouting reports someday have three stars typically.

Career minor leaguers or career backup major leaguers typically have one or two stars.

Now, my question is, does having a high career potential make the player play better?

I made myself an A ball caliber player to experiment with. When I gave him one star of career potential, he had a small overall skill meter and only asked for an A ball contract and a minimal salary when I signed him.

Now, when I gave him five stars, and did not touch any other stat like hitting or such, his overall skill meter was noticably much higher. Now he wanted a AAA contract, more money, and to be playing everyday now. The scouting reports were much more kind to him now with five stars, touting him as a shoe in as a good major leaguer in the future.

What is it about "career potential" that makes one player better than the next?

During the off season, (well between spring training and the start of the actual season), the higher the career potential a player has, the more his stats are likely to increase during the player progression when he is younger. And his stat won't decrease as much when he is older if his career potential is high. Career potential only effects players in dynasty or owner mode if you play a few seasons.

Thanks for the reply. That makes a lot of sense. Do you also think that this also has to do with that variable stuff option? Some guys have their off days and their great days. I was thinking that having more career potential makes for more good days and makes your player more clutch in important situations.

It's possable, I never really thought of that. But my better players who happen to have higher career potenial do seem to have more better days than not. But I think how well you hit in the clutch has more to with how well you play then anything else.
