another crashing problem...no mods installed/bone stock!

I know there's like millions of other threads like this and I apologize for making another one. But when I searched and read those messages, it seems like most of them have to do with the mods.

In my case, I just literally picked up the game and installed it a couple of hours ago. Since then, I've been trying to play a full game but failed to do so every single time (farthest I got is 6 1/2 innings).

The game crashes to desktop and on couple of occasions, the computer rebooted all by itself. Perhaps, it has to do with graphic card overheating and whatnot but I've been playing Flight Simulator 2004 (requires lots of graphic power) for the last few months and haven't had any problems with it. I have NO mods installed at the moment.

When it crashed to desktop, I got an error message concerning d3d8.dll. I was wondering if anybody has any idea what that refers to.

Here's my spec:

AMD Athlon XP 2000+ w/ 1.7Ghz

512 MB RAM

19.2 Gigs free

DirectX 9.0

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro AGP 128MB (just updated the drivers)

Any help greatly appreciated.

It's a DirectX file. The exact error message would be more helpful though. Do you have DirectX 9.0c installed? Were there any problems noted when you run dxdiag? (Start/Run/dxdiag)

Yep, I have DirectX 9.0c installed. No problems noted when I ran dxdiag.

I may try turning off the anti-virus.

Thanks.

You had mentioned that you recently updated your card's drivers. I know you shouldn't have to do this, but you might want to re-install DirectX 9.0c now that you updated the drivers.

Also, when starting your computer, do you receive any error messages?

I took your advice and re-insalled DirectX 9.0c but it's still crashing and getting the same error message. And no, I don't get any error message when I start my computer.

Here's a little more detail that I managed to get as far as the error message is concerned...

AppName: mvp2005.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: d3d8.dll

ModVer: 5.3.2600.2180 Offset: 00039cc0

Also, I had installed the latest ATI Radeon driver for my graphics card (Catalyst 6.4). But, it slowed down my computer and suspected that it might be the problem. Then, I went and checked out the ATI forum and it looks like Catalyst 4.12 seems to be the popular choice by many. So, I installed 4.12 instead and cleaned up/uninstalled the 6.4. Still having the same issue but I just wanted to throw that out there...

Thanks guys.

P.S. Perhaps I should go back to MVP 2004. At least it never crashed... :D

Catalyst drivers are very touchy.. Im running the exact same video card you are.. I would only run the catalyst drivers as a last resort.

Download video drivers from your computer manufacturers web site.

If you own a gateway go there, if you own a dell go there ect.

stick in your serial number and they should pull up a list of certified drivers made to work with your particular system..

If your system was made by hand IE not Gateway, Dell, ect.. then you are stuck using the Catalyst I believe.

Also, Ive been playing MVP2005 since release another thing that you SHOULD do and what has fixed a lot of my random crashing problems is after you install the game make sure to apply all the patches in order..

Install game

apply patch 1

apply patch 2

apply patch 3

apply patch 4

apply patch 5

then apply Mods if u use them.

This has helped me greatly with my crashing issues.

Another thing.. Some Anti Virus programs will check the internet for updates every 30-60 minutes.. I have had problems with this crashing my game.. So uninstall or disable all your anitvirus programs while playing.

Note: Even if you are not connected to the internet it will not stop the anit virus software from trying to update.

If you are seriously having problems with DirectX then the only that I know of to fix that is to reformat the hard drive...

It is a bad Idea to try to downgrade DirectX say from 9.0c to 9.0b and Ive "heard" that if there is a corruption in the DirectX files overwriting with the same version will not fix this...of course I would not reformat your harddrive unless you are certain there is no other options.

This is just my advice and what I have experienced running the same video card and playing this game for multiple years..

Hope I was helpfull.

I love ATi cards. But it seems that they have "Tech" people running everything at their site. That being said, they assume everyone else is on the same page - not a fair assesment in my opinion.

Since you reinstalled DirectX again, I think the "corruption" is on the part of ATi's drivers.

When you updated your Video Card's drivers, did you unistall the old ones? Also, do you have your ATi Catalyst Control Center always "running?" If so there's usually a little ATi icon in your taskbar by your clock.

Thanks, paldragons. Unfortunately, it's still crashing.

Yea, I uninstalled the old ones before installing the new one. And yea, the ATi Catalyst Control is running all the time. There's ATi icon by the clock.

I may try updating the driver again to a newer one. I think that's pretty much the only thing left to do. I may also look into reformatting the harddrive as paldragons suggested.

Thanks.

Hey man,

Before you move forward with reformatting your PC, you might want to try the following and see if it can avoid you the headache of formatting.

1) Ensure you have .NET Framework Installed

To me, this is silly, but to ATi Catalyst software, it's necessary. If you don't already have .NET 2.0 Installed, you can grab it here.

Once you have downloaded your copy of the program, run it and reboot your PC. Once you have completed this step, go to step 2.

2) Completely Remove Catalyst-Related Software

After you have made sure you have .NET Framework 2.0 installed, refer to the download attached to this reply - Catalyst Unistaller.rar. Download and unzip this file. Before doing anything else, open up Windows Task Manager and select the Processes tab. Sort the process names alphabetically in ascending order. Anything that starts with "ati" in its name can be selected. Then choose to "End Process" for those that you find. I'm not 100%, but it's approximately 3 ATi processes.

Once you've stopped those processes, run the unistaller you just downloaded. Then, even if you're not prompted, reboot your computer again.

3) Obtain and Install the Latest ATi Catalyst Control Center Software

At this point, you should have installed .NET Framework 2.0 and removed all of your old drivers/software. Even though you might be staring at a 16-bit screen at 800 x 600, it's only temporary - we hope.

Under the first table of available downloads here, choose the Catalyst Control Center Package - 34.2MB. Download the installer and run it. From here, just follow the directions provided by the software. Then, when you're down, reboot your machine [again  ].

I really can't say that this will work for sure and if you don't follow any of the aforementioned, I completely understand, man. I'm sure this has already been a headache for you thus far. The only reason I'd even recommend it is because if you reformat your PC, there's no guarantee that it'll solve the problem. :?

Also, if you try this and still receive the same problem, it might not hurt to reinstall DirectX again. Yeah, I said again. . I'm sure that's the last thing you want to hear though.

Regardless, best of luck mate and post back with any hiccups, [/cross fingers...]

Oh, and on a last thought - I know this is shooting from the hip, you might want to remove MVP Baseball from your PC completely, (Unistall then Delete game's directory in Program Files and in My Documents), and then reinstall it again with your Virus Software disabled.

Hey guys, I've been sort of busy lately and haven't checked it out for a while.

PolishJoe, thanks so much for all your help. I'm lucky to have found this site. :yeah:

Well, I tried everything that you suggested but it's still crashing. I also updated the driver but I've given up on that. I installed Catalyst 5.1 but I hesitate to install any newer ones from here on since I heard they are more geared toward the newer cards. Plus, I don't think it's gonna help all that much considering the fact that this game was introduced early '05 (I already even tried the latest driver too).

I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

I'm just gonna get a copy for the Xbox. :)

Again, thanks for all your help.

Dang man - that really sucks. :( The only other thing I could think, if you wanted to try for a last second homer, would be to update your motherboard's drivers. Specifically, I'm thinking that your motherboard AGP drivers could be at fault.

It just sucks that you can't play a game which you more than meet all the minimum requirements.

Regardless man, at least a lot of people on this site have setup some Xbox mods - if you're ever interested.

Good luck and sorry I couldn't help

Maybe the .dll file is just corrupt? I'm not sure if you've taken this approach yet or not, but in Windows Explorer, turn hidden files on so you can see everything, the do a search for d3d8.dll, find it's location, then visit this website http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3d8 and download the .dll and overwrite the one you already have.
