The Houston Astros 2006 Season

http://www.dynastymanager.com/dm360.cgi?u=lmpbzktkix&s=mlb

Note - I know I made a Cardinals one and I intend on still doing that, but I cannot continue with it until I get my Max Drive (ordered yesterday) and update all the rosters. Sooo, because I'm so bored lately and need to warm up and all of that jazz, I'm making a Fantasy team... Thanks.

So who do I pick, you may be asking yourself... Well, I did the "unexperienced woman" thing and picked the Astros because I like their uniforms and their ballpark. ...no offense to unexperienced women...

St. Louis Cardinals @ Houston Astros

Rob Bell (0-0, 0.00) vs. Roy Halladay (0-0, 0.00)

Former Cy Young winner Roy Halladay looks to start off the season with a victory under the Houston sun...

...and he was barely able to escape away with a victory, the Cardinals scored early with a pair of homeruns including a 2-run shot from Carlos Beltran, but the Astros bats quickly ignited into flames as they began to slowly rally back, inching their way closer and closer and finally taking the lead in the fifth off an Albert Pujols solo homerun.

Roy Halladay struggling to begin the inning confused several fans as this is supposed to be a Cy Young winner, this man isn't supposed to fail at this game so fast... But luckily for the Astros Roy quickly regained his composer after the second inning and had three consecutive 1-2-3 innings and striking out five to keep him on the mound for seven total innings pitched.

For anyone who said that Minute Maid was a pitchers nightmare... they were probably right as the two teams combined for eight total homeruns in the ballpark on opening day.

A Look Back at the Cardinals/Astros Series...

The St. Louis Cardinals manage to avoid the sweep by dominating the Houston Astros with furious bats and even more furious pitching in the second game, keeping the 'Stros to just one run.

Roy Halladay and Josh Becketts lackluster performances were a bit of a surprise to the Astros GM but doesn't have any worries.

"Roy and Josh... They'll be back here next week and they'll definitely be ready. To me it's just a little ring rust, you know? They haven't had much of a chance to pitch with Spring Training mysteriously dissapearing in the midst of the fantasy draft... But when we go on to face the Mets at Shea next week, they'll be ready... I gaurentee it..."

As for the bats go, they were quietted down after their 12 hit game on Tuesday. The team combined for a total of five homeruns, Miguel Cabrera hitting two alone.

Series Breakdown:

Cardinals had a total of 11 runs, 22 hits, and six homeruns.

Astros had a total of 7 runs, 18 hits, and six homeruns.

The team looks to get back on track against the Cincinnati Reds this weekend, seeing the young stud Rich Harden face off against Jarrod Washburn. Both are mildly the same style and should prove to be an intestering match up.

Astros Struggle but Manage to Win

Despite having a hard time against opposing pitchers, the Houston Astros manage to homer their way to three wins in their first five games. Only one of the thirteen runs scored by the Astros were of something other then a homerun, an RBI single by Eric Byrnes for the first run of the season. Miguel Cabrera isn't exactly playing like himself either, it seems the young gun is going for the stands instead of going where they aint, as all four of his hits this year have been homeruns so far.

The pitching staff isn't entirely bad, espicially with the young gun Rich Harden. The young man pitched a complete game shut out for his first win of the season, allowing only four hits.

The Astros look to bring home six wins as they begin a road trip, first to New York to face the Mets, and then a rematch against the Reds in their own home town.

Post Game News

-D. Wright has been injured with a concussion and will be out for 30 days. He was the star of the game, hitting a 3-run homerun to put the Astros on top, which they held on to to win it. He went 2-3 on the night, until diving for a ground ball that was just foul, and getting a concussion. We wish D. Wright a speedy recovery. He was hitting a .346 with 4 homeruns and 6 RBIs.

-John Maine and Mike Redman were traded to Arizona for young catcher Yadier Molina. Yadier is known for his outstanding throwing arm and fielding. So far he is hitting a .292 with 1 HR/RBI.

-Akira Kawasaki (3B) and Brandon Duckworth (RP) were called up from AAA

Players of the Game

Rich Harden pitched 2nd complete game shutout, allowed only five hits and struck out 4. Went 1-2 with an RBI single, and walked twice to the opposing pitcher.

Cesar Izturis led the onslaught with a double to score two runs, then an inning later singles to score two more.

Yadier Molina's first time in an Astros uniform turns out to be catastrophic... for the Mets. Yadier doubles and homers to knock in 3 runs and scores twice himself.

Disgraces of the Game

Brian Roberts went 0-5 and was the only starting Astro to not score a run or knock someone in.

Miguel Cabrera continues skid, going 0-5. Still scores thanks to reaching third on throwing error.

Post Game Report

-Astros successfully pick up their first sweep as they outscore, outpitch, and outclass the New York Mets. The combined scores were 17-0, as Roy Halladay, Josh Beckett, and Rich Harden all pitched consecutive complete game shutouts against the New York Mets.

-The third game of the Mets series proved to the Astros fans that the Astros weren't all power, as the first six runs were all small ball plays, ranging from doubles to singles.

-The third game also proved to the critics that the early trade of John Maine and Mike Redman for Yadier Molina wasn't a letdown...at least not tonight as Yadier went 2/5 and knocked in 3 runs on a double and a homerun. Although this is one game, this is more then what Mike Redman has contributed to the Astros organization.

-During the series, Miguel Cabrera hit his first hit-other-then-a-homerun. He still leads the majors with five homeruns, although hitting .194.

-Cesar Izturis has already commited three errors this season, two in the 3rd game of the Mets series, all of them throwing errors.

-4/10 leagues shut outs belongs to the Houston Astros, two to Rich Harden
