Do you need a controller to play MVP on the PC?

Tom101, I'm brand new to this site and JUST purchased MVP 2005 thru Amazon. They also sell the Logitech gamepad controller for like $15. My advice would be to spend the money on it!

I have the logitch dual action, and I like it so far. However, some of the people on this site have complained about the analog stick. claiming it goes haywire after awhile. You should look into it. They recommend the rumble pad. But definately get a game pad. the keyboard is really fustrating.

You can use MVP without a controller. However, like NCMALEN, I'd recommend a controller.

But, from personal experience, I'd recommend against the Logitech Rumble Pad. These boards are full of bad stories about that gamepad. But, in fairness, I don't think the Rumble Pad 2 by Logitech has encountered as nearly as much negative feedback.

Also, if you have a PlayStation 2 controller or Xbox controller, you can purchase a USB adapter so that you can use them on your computer. I can't attest for the XBox controller, but the PS2 controller is 100% compatible and takes about 10 minutes to properly "customize" for MVP via the Config file. It's really simple and if you take that route, go into the MVP Support section. I'm pretty sure the same stands for the Xbox controller, but I've never had one nor tried one.

If you have a console controller, in addition to being more durable the most Gamepads, the adapter, available at Radio Shack as well as everywhere online, is anywhere from $7 - 15 dollars.

Good Luck!

I have owned 2 logitech dual actions - they both broke, and I am a 25 year old adult who doesn't punish my controller or slam it.

I have owned a radio shack USB for PS2 - it was great, but the analog direction was messed up and it wouldn't always play right in some of the games i play with - IE: GTA

Finally I went for the 39.99 xbox 360 - with a simple new controller.cfg and the default windows drivers I was in business. albeit the simple menu buttons are relocated, it isn't a huge issue, i got used to it by the third game.

i recomment the xbox 360 because it is built tough, feels right and it has a big company warrenty. plus, all future PC games wanting the microsoft gaming seal need to comply with the controllers settings and provide a universal gamepad button mapping.

I played 3 complete seasons of MVP 04 and I'm on my 4th in 05 without a controller. Its definately do-able. Iv purchased a controller since I started playing MVP but I cant bring myself to use it for this game. The only downside is that you only have 1 type of slide available and you can't take a larger lead to steal bases.

what about pitching? I never used a keyboard with mvp, but I would imagine without the analog stick you can only throw the ball down the middle or way outside?

You can only throw in the 9 squares, or force it out of zone. So if you throw a perfect pitch, it'll land right in the middle of the square. However! If you press the key immediately just after the green, it will be a nice pitch right on the outer strike zone lines.

I've used a keyboard to play the last two versions of MVP, and it works fine for me. However, there are two caveats -

1) I'm left handed, so controllers have always been kinda weird for me, anyhow.

2) I've completely remapped the keyboard to give me all the functions I need using two hands. On offense, my left hand controls the d key to hit, the r key to bunt and the f,e,s, and c buttons to represent the bases (it isn't as awkward as it sounds, especially if you have some keyboarding skills) and my right hand uses the numpad keys to aim my swing. On defense, the same d,f,e,s, keys represent pitch selection, and the numpad aims the pitches.

I map the other keys around those to get the rest of the functions, but you get the idea.

I have an xbox controller. Should I go to EBgames and buy a Xbox to PC adapter? What do I look for? Will they have it?

I'm also looking for a copy of mvp05 for the CPU when I get there. Hopefully they have it!

I played for over a year with keyboard, then I got a Rumble Pad 2 by Logitech. So far I've encountered no problems with the Rumble Pad in 3 or 4 months of play. The only difference between gamepads and keyboards I see is with the gamepad I have a bit more controll hitting and pitch placement over a keyboard. It really comes down to what style you're used to, (gamepad or keyboard), and practice time you put in with it. I played about 50 games with a gamepad before I felt good enough to start a dynasty using it.
