cybernetic
Chacin Shuts Down Champs, Jays Launch 4 April 14th, 2006 - Game 10 of 162 Game 1 of 3: Toronto Blue Jays (6-3) @ Chicago White Sox (7-2) Toronto Blue Jays 6, Chicago White Sox 0 Above: Russ Adams launches a 3-run shot (2) in the 5th. Right: Frank Catalanotto hits a solo HR (1) in the 6th. In his second start of the season, Gustavo Chacin hurled an absolute gem of a ball game. He threw a complete game 2-hit shutout at the World Champion Chicago White Sox. Both hits were singles and he failed to allow a runner to reach second. Sox starter Javier Vazquez was cruising until he got into trouble in the 5th. A lead-off double by Shea Hillenbrand and a 2-out error by Juan Uribe put 2 on for Russ Adams who launched a 3-run shot (2) into the right-field bleachers to make it 3-0 for the Jays. Frank Catalanotto would later hit a solo shot in the 6th (1) stretching the lead to 4-0. Troy Glaus would add 2 solo shots (5), in the 6th and 8th respectively. Chacin threw a one-hitter into the 9th but gave up a 2-out single to Ross Gload. He'd get Jermaine Dye on a groundout to end the game. Chacin went just 4 1/3 in his first start before being chased after allowing 4 runs. He was extremely wild in that game, however, and had thrown a lot of pitches. He gave up 7 hits in that outing which was very different than this game. He had amazing command in this start which was his best start thus far in the majors. Javier Vazquez got the loss (0-1). He went 6 innings allowing 5 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits including 3 home runs. Chacin improves to 1-1 with the win. Clubhouse Talk: "I just established the inside with my cutter and then threw off-speed stuff on the outside corner. I got a lot of weak grounders off that." - Gustavo Chacin "This is what we've been waiting for from Chacin. cybernetic
Jays Edge Champs in Extra Inning Affair April 15th, 2006 - Game 11 of 162 Game 2 of 3: Toronto Blue Jays (7-3) @ Chicago White Sox (7-3) Toronto Blue Jays 2, Chicago White Sox 1 (15 innings) Above: White Sox Center-fielder Tony Womack walks back after watching a Wells HR (6). Right: Pinch-runner Jeremy Owens slides in safely to tie the game in the 9th. The game was all it was built up to be: a pitcher's duel for the ages. Both starters were outstanding. Chicago starter Mark Buehrle pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings before yielding his first run of the game, a solo home run (6) off the bat of Vernon Wells to deep center field. Roy Halladay would go 8 innings, striking out 9 batters before leaving the game after surrendering a lead-off single to Paul Konerko. B.J. Ryan would relieve him and go for the save but the 2nd batter he faced, A.J. Pierzynski took him the other way to left-field with a line-drive double off the wall. The pinch-runner, Jeremy Owens, would score all the way from first as the throw was off-line from Reed Johnson. Both teams would get their chances in extra innings but as Chicago closer Bobby Jenks was hitting the wall, Bengie Molina delivered with a solo HR (2) to put the Jays back on top 2-1. Francisco Rosario (the 6th pitcher used by the Blue Jays) came in and closed out the game for his first major league save. Jason Frasor got the win (1-0) throwing 2 scoreless innings of relief. Bobby Jenks got the loss (0-1) after throwing 5 innings in relief. He was visibly tired and was getting wild by the end of it but was still effective for the most part. Clubhouse Talk: "This a huge character builder for us. Even though B.J. blew the save, our bullpen held the score and we managed to come back to win it." - Gregg Zaun "He hit a tough pitch, a slider right on the outside corner the other way. Right: B.J. Ryan clenches his fist after picking up his 4th save. A.J. Burnett was outstanding in a dominating performance against the 2005 world champs. He threw 6 2/3 innings and allowed just a run on 2 hits. The one run he allowed was a 4th inning solo home run (3) to Paul Konerko, his first hit allowed in the game. He walked none and struck out 7 in the win as he improves to a perfect 3-0. Alex Rios hit an RBI-double in the 3rd to bring home Aaron Hill for the first run of the game. Lyle Overbay would single to drive in a run in the 4th and he would score on a bases loaded double play as the Jays took the game 3-1. B.J. Ryan was shaky allowing 2 hits but he did pick up his 4th save. Clubhouse Talk: "I felt great but I threw a lot of pitches, mostly trying to put guys away. cybernetic
It's getting too easy I'm going to adjust my hitting sliders back to normal and if it's still too easy I'll move up to All-Star. Right: B.J. Ryan got save #5. Ted Lilly did not have his best game but he was good enough as the Jays hung on to defeat the New York Yankees by a score of 7-5. Lyle Overbay hit a 2-run homer in the 4th to open the scoring. Aaron Hill would add an RBI double before the innning was through making it a 3-0 lead. The Yankees would chip away at the lead however, scoring a run in the 5th on an RBI double by Johnny Damon. Jaret Wright didn't help them though as he loaded the bases after 3 singles for Alex Rios. He promptly hammered the first pitch from him into the 2nd deck for a grand slam making it 7-1. The Yankees would make it interesting scoring 3 runs on singles over the next few innings and a sacrifice fly in the 9th off B.J. Ryan to make the score 7-5 but that's as close as it would get. Lilly would pick up the win (3-0). He went 7 innings yielding 4 runs on 13 hits, walked none and struck out 5. Jaret Wright got the loss (1-2) allowing all 7 runs on 12 hits. Right: Shea Hillenbrand leaves the yard in the 7th. The Jays didn't get a lot of hits off Boston starter Tim Wakefield in the game but when they did they made him count. Of the 6 Jays hits in the game, 3 were solo home runs. The Red Sox couldn't cash any of their runners in stranding all 11 batters that reached game on base, including grounding into 2 double plays. Aaron Hill, Shea Hillenbrand and Alex Rios each hit solo home runs in the 3-0 victory. In an expected move, the Jays flip-flopped middle infielders Russ Adams and Aaron Hill around and it is expected that they will go that way from now on and Adams will start to get more at-bats against lefties. Gustavo Chacin (2-1) went 7 strong giving up no runs on 9 hits and striking out 5. Tim Wakefield got the loss (2-2) throwing all 8 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and also striking out 5. B.J. Ryan close out the 9th for his 7th save of the season which ranks second in the majors. Clubhouse Talk: "I threw the ball well and really tried harder to get guys out when I had runners on base." - Gustavo Chacin "The Adams/Hill switch is just due to Adams lesser throwing arm than Hill's. Adams does have the range to play short in the long run but Hill just has a stronger arm and it's more needed at short than second." - John Gibbons Scoring plays: BOS: NONE.
