Simtastic Baseball Games!

Hey, thought I would start a new topic for everyone to talk about their

obvious love for baseball and baseball sims. I remember starting with

the original Earl Weaver game, for my Tandy 1000. I was only about

9 or so, and I thought it was so cool that I could "edit" my players and

add my dad and guys from my LL team to my computer team. Then

it progressed to Tony LaRussa baseball, this I think? was the first game

that actually had drafts and real players from current teams. I know

Weaver had the all-time greats, but LaRussa had all of the current

players, it was great. Then I went on to other games, but LaRussa

really nailed it. Then years later High Heat came out, and I was addicted.

The games just keep getting better, but this goes without saying that

MVP06 should be the best made, possibly ever. With the modders on

this site, who are the most detailed and creative that I have seen, even

going back to the High Heat site, which I had to say I thought I was

doomed when they discontinued the HH franchise. It did take awhile

to get hooked on MVP, but with all the capabilities that this game and

the modders have to offer, I can't see it stopping here. My only regret

is that I don't have the time nor knowledge how to contibute to the mods.

I hope this goes on as far and long as it can, with these modders and

the computer technology out there, this truly is as close as you can get

to running a professional baseball team. It should be interesting and

exciting to see just how far it goes, and to FINALLY get our hands on

the long awaited MVP06 FINAL!! Cheers to everyone!

Outside of Intellivision baseball, I really started off with Microleague Baseball (the original version) for my Atari 800. Very ancient by today's standards by far, but fun to manage. However, Earl Weaver BB for the Amiga was the best by far. I don't know how many hours I played that one. The batter/pitcher interface was great, the audio was great on my stereo and I still think that game had the best ball physics to this day. Obviously the game couldn't compare graphically to today's BB games and it didn't have all the career options and such, but the gameplay was awesome and the game provided realistic results. I haven't done it recently, but I've played it on my PC via the Amiga emulator and it still plays a great game.

Yes, it's available on Intellivision greatist hits packages for the PC, PS2 and Xbox, I think. Unfortunatly, they are only emulations and not conversions, so the games can often be difficult to play due to the difference in controllers.

YES! I loved strat-o-matic baseball. When school was out for summer,

and I went to Indiana to stay at my grandparents house, they obviously

didn't have a computer or nintendo , sega, ps.. So it was the all-mighty

strato-matic board game! It was great!!

strat-o-matic baseball for windows is a great baseball sim based on its board game. The only thing it lacks is realistic graphics.

Do they have roster updates for it?

yeah I wished strat-o-matic made a updated version..though MVP06 has

all the condiments that you could hope for in a game..minors.contracts.

Do you know if they are going to offer a retirement and all-time stats in

the final?

MicroLeague Baseball, man those were the days, I struck out so much. Tony LaRussa was the ****, except for the 27 K-no hitter exploit I found. LaRussa was a great sim, so many stats, simulated/played realistically, great stadiums. Front Page Sports baseball!!! Man that was a game, I still have it somewhere. It was deep, but I thought if the batter/pitcher screen could be so detailed at the time that the fielding view could have been better, too, but it was very pixelated. 320x240 on a 486....I was young and ythought it could be better.

Anyone remember Baseball stars on nintendo??? I lost many days of my life to that game, especially when the battery reset all my created players/teams. How about Baseball Stars 2000??? Disappearing pitches, fireball fastballs, stadiums in space....not realistic but fun as hell to play.

High Heat!!! The tuning file was so great. The crashes/resets were not. Greatest baseball game ever, until MVP.

Anyone ever play that dice baseball travel game? It was like a pad with a bunch of scorecards and two dice that you roll to see the outcome of the at-bat.

Another great sim taken from the board game is APBA Baseball, converted to the PC as "Baseball for Windows"

Like Strat-o-Matic , Baseball for Windows also lacked animations but had photos of the team's home field.....The pc version was really based on player stats from the previous year (which made APBA so popular) and the main screen had scripted copy providing actual play-by-play.

One of the greatest features was actual audio provided by one of the greatest announcers of all time....Ernie Harwell.

Even though there was no moving animations, the game gave you the same experience you would have when listening to pbp on the radio....and Harwell made it even more realistic.

Strat is going strong, new season disk released every year.

They also have released past season, and Hall of Fame set of cards.

Check out the football, basketball, and hockey games they have ported to the PC from the initial board game.

There are forums for talk/spport/leagues: http://www.stratfanforum.com/forums/

Maybe there is a way to convert that play by play to mvp.

I second that TKS......I still play APBA....

I get email punchups from APBA but have not kept current with their offerings.

I know when I played the Windows version I was amazed at the realism that Harwell's commentary provided.

It boggles the mind to think of the hours he had to spend in front of the recorder providing pbp for every scenerio one can think of....plus having to pronounce each player's name which alone included 750 names.

And in the final product it all blended together seemlessly.....Quite a tedious task to be sure.

I hope he received proper compensation....plus each year he had to update the names of all the new names.

FPS Baseball 98... or BBPRO98 is great. I recently setup a new HD and started playing an old personal league I have... lol did 5 seasons worth this week. Though its sorta bland for nowadays its such a great sim.

Probably its best strength is the easy simming, roster management (wish it was that easy in MVP) and simple ratings system. League creation is the best~ too.

The utilities for it are great too, like BBEdit still packs a punch compared to a lot of the utilities for newer baseball games.

I used to play BB Mogul and uhh I forgot what it turned into but I think I still have an old beta of Pure-sim Baseball (Shaun Sullivan, guy who did BBEdit's own game). I liked the purely sim games, but I always thought BBPro was one step above those puresims... but still behind (in some ways) in things like EA BB games.

I remember baseball stars! I loved creating my players and earning

money and contracts..Then when you'd really get going, the thing

would erase itself...Their style and setup had tons of potential, if

you could have mixed the financial system with LaRussa you would

of had a late 80's early 90's close equal to MVP w/o minors of course.
