Gordo
Okay, I know the obvious stuff, but the stuff that confuses me involved the bags. I know if it hits the bag, it's fair. But what about the hopping over the bag. Can someone clarify all of the possible scenarios on balls hit down the line; pre-bag, post-bag, etc. Thx
sfgiantsflgators
fair or foul is always in the umpires discretion. by definition, a fair ball must touch in fair territory first before crossing into foul territory. obviously, if it rolls foul and stops or is picked up in foul territory after touching in fair territory first and before reaching the bag, it is foul. the tricky part for an umpire comes when it hits in fair territory then crosses the bag - he must decide if it was in fair or foul territory at the point it reached the bag to determine if it is fair or foul. if no ground contact is made before the bag (i.e., line drive) then it only matters where it first touches ground past the bag, and not where it crossed the bag. hope that helped :D

Gordo
Thanks..... I guess it was the hit fair first and then go over the bag stuff that was confusing me some.
