BigDom
I have tried Vista on both my computers, it makes it totally slow no matter how much ram, and there are still alot of bugs..... deffinalty go with xp and wait a year of so after vistas release
snepp
I wouldn't touch Vista until it has been out long enough to be properly patched.
Kccitystar
Yeah, I'll be waiting for Vista SP1, seeing as it will be inevitable for IE to have bugs and holes
bravesj858
i like xp, and by the looks of it, vista is very overrated. if macs weren't so high, i may have considered getting myself an ibook instead, but i'll be sticking with windows for a while at least. i'll probaly stick with xp for at least two more years, until windows phaes it out. i'll probaly get an xp labtop that is vista cabable for the futue. klon122
i'll probaly get an xp labtop that is vista cabable for the futue. Knowing Microsoft and the way they push out older OS, the only Vista capable versions of Windows in the future will be Vista. DirectX10 ain't coming to XP, for example. nmm66
and this is probaly a duh question...will the office 07 be sold for under $100? check at your school's bookstore to see if you can get the educational version of office 07 when it comes out. Its usually cheap and comes with word, excel, powerpoint and outlook (at least i think thats right). I think in Canada you can get it for around 130, so I imagine it will be about 100 bucks in the states.

klon122
No one else is brave enough to try the Vista beta? That's okay, your trepid computer explorer/geek has installed (and eventually deleted) the recent Vista beta and it's so-so. I didn't mind the new eye-candy (e.g. Aero GUI and the new fancy window switcher), but it seems a bit lame considering what I've read about the Mac OS X interface. Microsoft apps now have the menu-bar removed and moved the functions to the context menu (right-click). Yikes. May be useful for Office users. For games, I launched a few games from my other hard drive in Vista and games load slower. At this stage, Vista just isn't quite gamer-ready yet. Along with the annoying User Control prompts and the hand-holding Game Explorer and system evaluator, I'll wait some years until my apps on XP become completely useless. Anyone have any questions about Vista, I can answer them.
bravesj858
thanks. i'm wondering if xp or vista is the better system to have. i say xp, but i bet windows will try to push everyone to have the newest toy. i may switch over to macs in a few years or so. bravesj858
i probaly won't get a mac right now becuase of the high cost of the mac. but i heard that macs come preinstalled with alot of programs though, so it pretty much cancels out the diffrence. Bama
Macs are relatively high cost, but as of now, there's not really much to worry about spyware and virus wise, and yes they do come with tons of programs, and you can install Windows on a Mac using Apple Boot Camp. The benchmarks are excellent too.
bravesj858
seems like vista looks sucky in some reviews. anyone with postive reviews of vista as a good thing? and how long from vista's release is xp considred obsolete? i want my labtop to last a good while, probaly three years at the very least, so i don't buy another one until 2010 at least (buying at the end of 2006). i'm just trying to get a good scope of vista here. i'm currently running a xp desktop with a 1.5ghtz processor athon 1800+, nvida geforce 5200 graphics card, 512 mb ram and a 160 gb hard drive. i won't buy vista until xp becomes an also ran product (2008 or 2009) for this computer, but i'm becoming a bit more interested in mac products, as i've had experince with macs for years, and they come preinstalled with alot of programs, instead of nothing with windoze. thoughts? this has become a windows vs. mac debate, i know. Bama
Check out www.winsupersite.com for more info on Vista. You can test out a Vista Beta now with Microsoft's Vista CTP. The reviews are sucking partially because its a beta, it should get better though. But don't expect anything revolutionary with Vista, they've already cancelled about a billion of its 'cutting-edge' features. I'd get a Mac if I had the money. Also, have you ever looked at Linux? You can dual-boot it with Windows or whatever you want.
bravesj858
i'm not big on linux, that's really not for me. i read some really negative reviews, saying vista was just a thing to compete with apple and not really be impressive. it looks sucky. i hope microsoft doesn't lock off xp one day like i heard some doomsayesrs say to force everyone to switch to crummy vista. my parents just got a xp home labtop for 500 bucks with like the bare minum on it. they are using more as a mobile computer, and don't want to overload it. i intend to use mine as a more of a second computer, to upgrade from my aging computer, and mobile. since at the end of 2006, all the companies will stop putting xp on their new labtops (is this correct?), i may go to the mac, but my parents claim it's too expenisve and tend to hate macs and claim it's overpriced. but i've havent' been impressed with windows lately, and i've always wanted to own a mac. jhath
go mac... i just got a macbook pro and i love it... im running both xp and tiger... with mac you can still run xp, but with xp, you cant also run mac... mac os is much faster, imo, and support is unquestionably better... its awesome... while macs are more expensive, if you're looking for a good longterm laptop, go macbook pro... im beginning to use it as a desktop its so good
bravesj858
how long you think a pc labtop will last if i bought one tomorrow and didn't want to upgrade to vista? my parents say pc will cost less, but soon, it will probaly be useless. i plan on keeping my desktop pc btw, and use it as my pc home. bravesj858
i read this big time ripping of vista on this site, and although it's a beta, things don't look so good. you think this is just beta errors, or real problems with vista? is vista just xp on roids? an os x clone? or is it really worth it? Vista Feedback and also if vista does suck (as i fear), should i purchase an xp labtop during the hoildays knowing that they are going to be also ran products in another year's time, or should i give mac a try? (i've been on windows all my life btw, but starting to get sick of windows and their internal errors that seem to be worse with vista) i don't plan on gaming on the laptop or networking intially btw. i also want a slighty diffrent experinice on my labtop as well (like some diffrent programs on the laptop). bravesj858
another update. i'm probaly going to get a macbook after all, and this will probaly be in the first half of 2007 (earilest i was going to get a laptop was december anyway). but my parents think i'm a geek for going to a mac instead of getting a xp computer and getting vista later, as windows is the best program ever and macs are overpriced as they say. well, you get what you paid for, as i say. but i want one last assurance that this was the right thing to do. here's the laptop my parents got (and most likely what i was going to get): Acer Aspire AS3004WLCi. it's vista (bloatware) capable they say. my parents say "it's a laptop, don't put programs on it", and they just surf the net with it....not what i wanted a laptop for. i can surf the net anywhere. here's a dell laptop for comparsion: Dell Laptop. no way i'm getting a dell though, but this was more of a comparsion to other notebooks. now here's the macbook that i have my eye on: Macbook. i'm getting the midrange macbook for 1300 dollars. and plus, i can dual boot. and the xp price won't mean much now, as i can buy it for under 20 bucks, so that doesn't factor in, but the thing is that vista will be here one of these days and i want to avoid it. is the first computer too cheapie to do anything? is the macbook really the best choice? do dells suck and explode? help me out. Dan
Yes, I'm liking that 13in white MacBook as well. I would never get a black Mac, because a.) it would heat up and b.) people might get that black thing sitting on your kitchen table confused with a Dell. I'm pretty sure you can get a $1,100 model. Really, after everything that's pre-installed is worth that extra couple hundred dollars - there isn't much you won't use at least once, unlike PCs. Seems like you're not to far away from the new one opening at Miami Beach...maybe it's worth a trip out there. -dan
