HarleyRider
OK. I know there already is a thread about this but I thought I'd start this one and maybe you moderators can make this a sticky since there are so many questions about this. I contacted EA support about playing MVP 2005 in widescreen and below is there response: Response (Jayson G.) 06/11/2006 01:34 AM Hello Scott, Thanks for contacting EA Technical Support and for your interest with the MVP Baseball 2005! I’m sorry for the difficulty that you are having in running the game. Unfortunately, the game is not tested on a widescreen resolution and the game auto detects the aspect ratio of your monitor that causes the image to stretch out. You may try adjusting the screen resolution of the game but we can't guarantee that it will run the game properly. Please accept our apologies that we can't assist you with the issue. If you have any other questions feel free to reply to this e-mail, and I will be very glad to help you out to the best of my ability. Should you require further assistance about this or any Electronic Arts games in the future please visit our web site and review our extensive Self Help knowledge base (http://ea.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?). Thank you, Jayson G. EA Tech Support I also talked to Jayson on the phone and and he said that when you use that hex editor to change the values for widescreen resolution(as mentioned on this forum and at Widescreen Gaming's forum), all that does is change the resolution numbers in "My MVP" video options to read whatever you have changed it to. It will have no effect on changing the resolution in the game. He said the only thing you can try is to make your monitor or video card run the game in the default aspect mode. You will have those vertical bars on the side but at least the game will look normal and not stretched out. Well, there it is folks, straight from the horses mouth. I guess I'll be playing '05 with those bars. I have a 24" widescreen and even with the bars it's still a bigger image than my 19" had. I hoped this helped clear things up for everybody. I just wished it was better news. Cheers!!! Scott AKA: HarleyRider
five
That doesn't sound right, it's changing it in game as well. Why else would it stretch the image and change the resolution.
HarleyRider
OOPS... I forgot to add something. I'm not sure about ATI video cards but for nVidia cards this is what you want to do to get the right aspect on widescreens so everything looks normal. You'll want to check the "Fixed Aspect Ratio Scaling" box in your video card settings (See pic), then go into your "My MVP" options and set it at 1280x1024x32, NOT a widescreen resolution you may have changed to, then everthing looks fine but you'll have a black border on the sides though. Enjoy... Cheers!!! Scott AKA: HarleyRider
HarleyRider
That doesn't sound right, it's changing it in game as well. Why else would it stretch the image and change the resolution. I don't know. I'm just passing along the info I was given. Maybe he meant it will stretch the image but not increase the detail to the higher resolution.(?) Cheers!!!
five
I've been running along at 1600x1200 with no problems.
pdub
Do you think you could contact him again regarding the aspect ratio? If the game auto-detects the monitor's ratio, maybe there is a setting in the exe that we can hex edit to force a widescreen ratio. I'm running in widescreen, although its stretched, I have gotten used to it. I like it much better then having black bars on the side. Five is right. Hex editing the resolution in the exe does change the resolution in-game(not menus) and in the 'my mvp' options. I'm running at 1280x768, screenshots are 1280x768. MarkB
Nice research job, Scott. Damn EA still owe me a PS2 game from MVP 2004. I should hatch a plot to storm their offices and demand my game. And a fix for MVP 2005 in widescreen. And the MVP 2005 PC source code. And some coffee.
Yankee4Life
I've been running along at 1600x1200 with no problems. Can you get a screenie of that? I'd love to see that.
HarleyRider
I've been running along at 1600x1200 with no problems. Ditto...I would also like to see a screen shot. Are you running a "widescreen" monitor? Because if you are and your image is not "stretched out" nor looks distorted, you are definitely an exception! Cheers!!! five
Lost my whole bunch of action shots, but here is a virgin shot. Click for high res. 1600x1200 is a 4:3 image, it's not widescreen.
HarleyRider
Five is right. Hex editing the resolution in the exe does change the resolution in-game(not menus) and in the 'my mvp' options. I'm running at 1280x768, screenshots are 1280x768. As mentioned above, all it does is stretch out the image to fill the monitor area but is distorted. Now, if it did this without being distorted, I would be one happy camper. But so far there is no fix for that. Believe me. Last night I must have spent 4 hours playing with the .exe file with my hex editor trying everything I could think of and nothing worked. Besides, with a 24" widescreen monitor even with the black borders on the sides, the image is still HUGE and fun to play! Cheers!!!

OK Five. Here we're talking about playing MVP '05 with a "widescreen" monitor. Our monitors look just like a widescreen TV but smaller. They have a 16:9 (some have 16:10) aspect ratio, not a standard 4:3 ratio like you're using. Cheers!!!
five
I know, I was just saying that the hex edit did change the resolution not just the menu text.
HarleyRider
I know, I was just saying that the hex edit did change the resolution not just the menu text. Yea you're right. I'm starting to believe that guy at EA doesn't know what the hell he is talking about!!! Since I won't play this in the stretched out distorted format in widescreen, I'm playing it with the black borders on the sides in the default 4:3 aspect ratio. Then I thought, since I'm playing it this way why not at least change my resolution to 1600x1200x32. So I did and bingo! Yes, I does change the resolution! It looks alot sharper and clearer than the 1280x1024 x32 did. I think I'll be giving EA another call and talk to this guy I talked to before just to let him know!!! Play ball!!! Cheers!!! five
I replaced a bunch of the 4:3 references in the exe with 16:9 with no luck. I looked through the xbe and there were only two references to 16:9, which also appear in the pc version. In case others are wondering I searched for the strings: 04 00 00 00 03 00 (4:3) 10 00 00 00 09 00 (16:9) Pretty sure that I did the little endian conversion right and everything. There was one 10 00 00 00 0a 00 (16:10) reference in the xbe, but none in the exe and I'm pretty tapped out as to new ideas.
thr33niL
Is there a guide or thread around that can walk you through changing the resolution to 1600X1200? That would be stellar.

HarleyRider
I envy you guys being able to play this game in wide screen! I have a widescreen and would envy myself too if I could play it like that but we can't. Yea, it fills the screen but the players look like a bunch of midgets on steroids!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm gonna contact EA again(for what good it will do)and ask them if they would consider coming out with a fix for this. I'll also steer them to this forum so they can see how many people would like to have the ability to play MVP '05 in widescreen! I can't imagine it would be too hard for their programming people to be able to do this. Cheers!!! :wynar:
HarleyRider
OK folks. To follow up on my previous post. I called EA tech again and talked to a gentleman by the name of Jared. I asked him if they would consider creating a "fix" to the widescreen problem. He said that ALOT of customers have been calling in and e-mailing them about this issue and it has been forwarded to the programmers for consideration. So the way I see it, the more people call in and e-mail EA on this it may get addressed. You know how the old saying goes: "The car that squeaks the most gets the grease". So everybody, get out your keyboards and start e-mailing them on this. Even better would be to call them. Their number is: 650-628-1005 When you hear the choices press 7 on your phone. This will take you directly to tech support. I only had to wait about 10 seconds before they answered. I used my cell phone so no additional charges apply, just your minute usage. If we all pull together and get enough people doing this they may just do something about it. Thanks alot... Cheers!!!
