sfgiantsflgators
Score-fest Ends With Red Sox Victory Battling for the wild card, Tampa Bay and Boston faced off in a short two game series. After winning game one 12-2, Tampa Bay welcomed back Ben Sheets from his dislocated finger. Boston countered with Matt Clement. Sheets struggled, giving up five runs in five innings. Sheets was followed by Cliff Politte and Jose Mesa, who gave up three and two runs respectively. With Clement going seven, allowing just one run, it looked as though Boston was going to walk away with the win. However, Jon Lester appeared in the eighth inning, and proceeded to surrender five runs, only getting two outs. David Riske was called on to halt the threat, and allowing just one hit for the rest of the game, he did just that. The win put Boston 1.5 games behind the Rays in the wild card race. Game 2 Boxscore League Injuries: ATL SP John Thompson will miss the rest of the season with wrist tendonitis.

sfgiantsflgators
Tampa Bay Wins Wild Card Over Boston For Their First Postseason Appearance With three games to go, Tampa Bay remained a game and a half ahead of Boston. In game two, Scott Kazmir faced off against Rob Bell. Kazmir only lasted 1.2 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. However, Kazmir's offense responded, getting eight runs in 3.2 innings off Bell. They added three runs off the Cleveland pen but, thanks to 5.1 scoreless relief innings of shutout baseball from Al Reyes, they wouldn't need it. Tampa Bay scored 11 total runs in their 11-6 victory...the third time in four games that they have scored in the double digits. Boston also won, which put the wild card on the line in game three. With a playoff birth on the line, pending a victory, Tampa Bay sent Casey Fossum out to face Paul Byrd. Byrd allowed four runs in five innings, and six shutout innings from Fossum put Tampa in position to win the game. Cliff Politte, who has struggled lately, came in for the final 2.1 innings, and allowed one run on a homerun by Johnny Peralta. That's all Politte would allow though as your Tampa Bay Devil Rays qualified for their FIRST postseason appearance! Game 2 Boxscore Game 3 Boxscore Game 4 Boxscore League News: Houston and Cincinnati will have a one game playoff for the NL Central division title. The loser will be the wild card winner. League Injuries: STL SP Jason Marquis suffered a torn rotator cuff and is expected to have surgery in the offseason. CIN SP Paul Wilson will miss the playoffs with a torn PCL. ARI SP Claudio Vargas suffered a fractured finger and will undergo surgery to have pins inserted.
