Rangers Late Rally Denies Rays Sweep

Tampa Bay took game two of the series despite a less than stellar outing by starter Mark Hendrickson. Hendrickson lasted just one inning in which he gave up six runs but the Rays offense was able to answer against Ranger hurler, Vicente Padilla. The Rays pounded out four homeruns in the game, including Julio Lugo's first of the season. This was Lugo's first day since being moved from the leadoff spot to ninth in the order.

After a four run eighth, it appeared that the Rays were headed to a series sweep of Texas. Closer Dan Miceli blew his first save of the year however, giving up two runs in the ninth, including Phil Nevin's game-winning single, his 15th RBI of the season.

Kazmir Denies Bronz Sweep But Late-Inning Runs Win Series For Yanks

Scott Kazmir showed again why many consider him one of the best young prospects in the league today. Getting his third win of the season (and still without a loss), Kamir held the Yankees to just two runs over 7.2 innings, allowing his offense to work on Yankee starter Shawn Chacon. Thanks to Kazmir, three solo homeruns would be all Tampa needed on the road to a 5-2 victory.

The rubber match of the series seemed to be going Casey Fossum's way - until the eighth inning. Through six Fossum had given up three runs and the Rays had a 5-3 lead. Fossum failed to get an out in the eighth however, as the Yankees got three off him, and two more off reliever Jason Childers to take the 8-5 lead that would hand them both the series, and the early division lead.

Bullpen, Walks Deny Tampa Bay Sweep

The Rays, on the backs of starter Seth McClung and reliever Jason Childers, shutout Boston in game two of a three game set. The two combined for eight hits and zero earned runs as Tampa took the game, 5-0. Rocco Baldelli and Jonny Gomes went deep for the Rays in the game.

Game three saw the Rays walk seven Red Sox, including four by reliever Brian Meadows in 1.2 innings, allowing David Wells to pick up his first win of the season. Aubrey Huff slammed his 11th homerun of the season but the Rays came up short of a sweep, 7-5.

Texas Drops 11 To Split Short Two Game Series

Casey Fossum's struggles would continue today as he allowed five runs in 3.1 innings. Not to be outdone, Rays relievers Travis Harper and Brian Meadows allowed three homeruns and six runs between them to squander their offense's seven run output and give Texas the 11-5 win.

Tampa Bay Gets Relief

With closer Dan Miceli struggling in the last couple weeks, rumors began flying that Tampa Bay was looking for help - and it came in the form of youngster Huston Street.

Earlier today, in a trade with Oakland, the Rays found what they were looking for. Sending outfielder Jonny Gomes, shortstop Julio Lugo, and backup catcher Josh Paul to Oakland, the Rays got the young closer Street in addition to catcher Jason Kendall.

Tampa general manager sfgiantsflgators commented on the trade in the press conference earlier today:

"We just felt that Miceli was put in an unfair position - we like him much better as a setup man. But to do that, we needed to go out and get someone that could jump into the fire now - and we think that Huston has proven himself capable of that."

When asked if Kendall was a target as well, sfgiantsflgators responded with:

"Were we shopping for Kendall? No. The A's were looking to unload his salary and wanted us to take him as a piece of the deal. However, we don't feel as if we are stuck with him - in fact, we think he's a wonderful addition to the club and expect him to start for us our next game."

Tampa Bay Roster Moves:

Delmon Young and B.J. Upton called up from AAA Durham

League Injuries:

SEA P Felix Hernandez was put on the 15 day DL with an inflamed right elbow

Also, with the struggles of Mark Hendrickson, Seth McClung was moved up to third in the rotation and Hendrickson dropped to fifth. This also helps split up the lefty/righty aspect as it used to be L, L, L, R, R.

Six Run Eighth Gives Tampa A Split

What started out as a decent pitcher's duel ended up a blowout when Yankees' reliever Philip Hughes allowed five earned runs in one inning of work, leading to a six run eighth inning for the Devil Rays. Yankees' starter Mike Mussina allowed three runs on five hits in 6.1 innings but couldn't match Tampa's Seth McClung who allowed two earned through eight innings.

thanks - yeah, i've had him in mind for awhile now. took me about 30 minutes to put together a package oakland would take. didn't really want kendall but they were all about giving me his $11 million salary...took a big chunk outta my bank :? think it'll be worth it though.

yeah, that was my stance on it too. i tried to get them to do it with either russell branyon or damon hollins (instead of Gomes), but they weren't having it - as well as they shouldn't.

figured calling up delmon was worth a shot - moved crawford to right because he has a much better arm. upton was doing pretty well so trading lugo, who was struggling, was already in my mind before miceli went sour.
