speels
I know a lot of people don't like Barry Bonds, but I think the guy is amazing. The thing I don't get is that the Giants management has refused for most of Bonds career to help him out. They have one of the best hitters in the game and they don't use him properly. If I were a diehard Giants fan I would be peaved. There is a simple solution to the Barry Bonds getting walked all the time problem. Get someone who can actually hurt the opposition if they decide to walk Bonds. I'm not talking about A.J. Pierzynski(sp??) or Benito Santiago......I mean someone who can hit 40 home runs and bat over .300. Here's my thing: Vladimir Guerrero was out there for anyone to sign......what are the Giants thinking. If I was in charge I'd open up the bank for a guy like that. Figure it this way, Bonds is at the plate, you can walk him and pitch the A.J. or you could spend a little money and if you walk Bonds you face Vlade. Not a tough call in my opinion. I know the Giants are too late for Vlade, but the is potential out there. I am a Jays fan and it would kill me, but San Fran really needs to take a look at Carlos Delgado. He is a great hitter, when he's healthy, and the Jays always seem to let the good players go. These are just my thoughts on this situation, any responses would be great. Thanks.. RAM
YES i totally agree w/ you on this. i actually mentioned this in my sf giants thread in the non-mvp forum to no response (am i the only giants fan here?). i cannot FOR THE LIFE OF ME figure this one out. back in 2002 when we went to the series was the best lineup the giants had in 10+ years (yes we had a good team in the late 80's clark, mitchell, williams - but had no pitching whatsoever when oakland trounced the giants in the 89 quake series). then due to free agency or whatever (or jeff kent being a huge *****) we lost a huge chunk of the lineup - kent, bell, lofton, sanders etc. plus estes, ortiz and so on. yet last year the giants rocked all season with plug in players to choke it away to florida in the playoffs. still we lost cruz jr., aurelia, worrell and on. this year i don't know how they've held in i honestly thought they would be next to last in the division above colorado. let me say this alou DOES know how to get role players to play WAY over their heads, but i don't like him he tinkers too much. but i can only imagine that if the execs in SF see the giants win the division they are satisfied. why else would they not go after a bigger name free agent than marquis grissom (who has done well the last two seasons)? GOD knows with the attendance they draw they HAVE GOT to have the cash, other than bonds and AJ and maybe grissom, who else on the team commands star salaries. even JT snow accepted less to stay. when guerrero was a free agent i crossed my fingers only to see him play in anaheim red. yes when i watched the mariners vs. jays tonight i heard mention of delgado going soon, and it crossed my mind. but then i remembered that even though the giants are probably only one piece away from completing the puzzle (to at least make run for the series) the head office in SF is just too damn cheap. what other explanation can there be? yankees1979
i'm not a giants fan but i like bonds as a player. he may say stupid **** sometimes but hes a damn good player. as far as the big "S" situation. no ones proved anything. and think about it hes done it for years with no real protection in the lineup. hes stayed healthy for the most part. which by the way is inconsistent with someone using steroids. you're right about one thing, if they opened their wallet a little and got some other good players they could be a very very dangerous team. sharpmath
I think all the issues you mention have a lot to do with the one thing that rules everything (like it or not) MONEY. Who knows, maybe the Giants will swing a deal for Cabrera. Go Barry! :p
Emil
i would love to have a guy Vlad on the team, but they cost money! In the future the Giants is hoping that Pedro Feliz could be that guy!
speels
I know they are counting on Feliz to be that guys, but Bonds doesn't have that long. They need to get a player now that has the skills.........even if it costs money. A World series championship will be worth the extra money IMO! Emil
I would also LOVE to have Vlad in our lineup, but the Giants' GM (Sabrehagen) said he will not make a blockbuster trade this season period! The Giants have increased their budget this season and are still in the hunt for the west. And the prospects are getting better! we have a ton of future stars in our minorleague system....The Giants will have a damn good rotation: Schmidt, J. Foppert, Matt Cain, j. Williams, M. Valdez and in the bullpen: Aardsma (closer) Lowery(spot starter, mabye starters) Correria (spot starter, mabey starter) Tyler Walker Wintaker Brad Hennessey And they got some really good young bats too Lance Nikero C. Ransome Todd Linden J. Ellison T. Torcato Baillmore J. Athas A. Chavez C. Valderrama. In my mind they got one of the best minorleague systems! Just wait! qwert
unfortunately not every team has a budget like the yankees. And alot of these owners out there are in the game for money... not for winning. They have the best hitter and pitcher in baseball no doubt.. but they still have too many holes to fill on the team.
jpup
The Giants GM is Brian Sabean, not Saberhagen.
RAM
unfortunately not every team has a budget like the yankees. And alot of these owners out there are in the game for money... not for winning. They have the best hitter and pitcher in baseball no doubt.. but they still have too many holes to fill on the team. well yes that is sort of my point so pretty much i agree w/ your statements, w/ one difference: mainly as far as the giants having too many holes, i don't know if that is necessarily true, as of YESTERDAY they were 1/2 game out on the dodgers ( i know we lost to colorado but due to obligations with the little lady i was unable to check on the L.A. game so maybe we're 1 1/2 out as i write this). and we all know the dodgers will tend to slide in the second 1/2 of the season. so like i said earlier alou DOES get pretty much ROLE players IMO to perform above their heads. he just messes w/ the lineup too damn much IMO i wish sometimes he would just "set it and forget it" for a while and see how the guys do in a steady lineup. but... i gues that's why he's the manager and i'm here, just my 2 cents though! remember w/ the exception of aurelia (who's better days seem behind him) and cruz jr. ( i really like cruz jr., but we know they ditched him for flubbing thos plays in the playoffs) this is pretty much the same team that went wire to wire last year. no small feat, even though we choked vs. the MARLINS (still in shock). so i think we can take the division or the wild card (still can't get used to saying that) at the least. basically with the lineup they have if they would just get a bat for barry, i think it would be lights out. as far as the money thing you are right some owners would rather have the money than the ring, which to me is totally frigging mind boggling. because you would figure the two would go hand in hand. look what it did for anaheim who would barely draw, now they are a respected feared team. and the marlins who i still can't believe. these guys couldn't even show foul balls going into the stands on TV because the stands were so empty. i think their attendace is up as well. but i guess in san fran, pacbell (or sbc) is always packed so why bother? the difference is this: some owners genuinely love the game of baseball some don't it's that simple. that's why as much as i hate steinbrenner i have to give the dude credit he loves baseball and wants to win. he'll do whatever it takes. which brings us to this: do i think it's bad for baseball the way he and boston and other teams spend $$$$? HELL NO (unless it's a buy a championship like fla. did a while back)! that's what seperates baseball from the rest. a salary cap in baseball would destroy the game IMO. who wants parity like the NFL or the NBA? where practically any team can win, and every team makes the playoffs. no in baseball it's part of the beauty of the game, i love hating the yankees and the dodgers (even though they don't spend as much) but with a cap (if the yankees and say the devil rays had to have the same payroll for example) HOW could you hate them as much? another example; i don't care if the ravens win the super bowl, so what? sure thay may have a great season but all the teams started out the same in general terms and "fairness". it's no great story. in baseball i love seeing a team (even though they beat my team) like the angels or even the d'backs win it all. who wouldn't love to see say the brewers or the reds or the drays win the title? it's a great story a historuc cinderella season, and it would only be a great story without a cap. with a salary cap all the teams would be generic, rivalries would die somewhat, and it would be the death of the dynasty. o.k anyway; soap box away. i LOOOOOOOVE baseball, and get barry a bat! qwert
maybe i should be more specifc... we all know they need a bat behind Barry. But what about a starter behind Schmidt? You feel comfortable going to war with Jerome Williams or Tomko as your #2? Or how about a dependable reliever in the back end of the pen so Schmidt wont have to pitch 130+ pitches every time to secure a W. yes they are almost at the top despite having all those holes.. but they are there because they are in a weak division. I dont think an extra bat would help as much if they dont bring in a pitcher to go along with it... i think the big picture should be going deep into the playoffs, not just winning a lousy divison. If im a fan of a team that has the best pitcher and hitter in the game, i would expect a lot more.... which brings us back to those cheap owners... sigh lol
