Mets Fantasy: The Story of Jacob Milani

I know the Reds didn't work out, I didn't have enough time to update it...I'll try harder this time to keep up with this one, to make sure the Yankees aren't the only talk in New York.

Jacob Milani started out playing baseball with his friends out in the neighborhood...he went up the ranks, to little league, up to high school at Notre Dame High School, some scouts from the University of North Carolina noticed him, and they offered him a baseball scholarship to Chapel Hill. Milani grew up rooting for the Tar Heels, so he accepted almost instantly. He shined as a third baseman at UNC, and he will enter the new Fantasy Draft as one of the best rookies. Some say he will go first overall, but will he? We will find out soon...

Commisioner Bud Selig announced: "With the first overall pick in the 2005 MLB Fantasy Draft, the New York Mets select... Jacob Milani, third baseman, University of North Carolina."

Milani's cheering section jumped and waved in delight. Milani was secretly pleased. I'm gonna help this team become the best in New York, he thought.

Halls heroics win it for Mets in 11th

Milani goes 3-5, 4 RBI in debut

The Mets rallied in the 8th to tie it at 5, and Toby Hall's 2-run homer in the 11th gave the Mets a 7-5 Opening Day win in Cincinnati. Rookie Jacob Milani went 3-for-5 with 2 homers and 4 RBI in his MLB debut. The Mets got on the board first in the third inning, when Carlos Zambranos singled, and, one out later, Milani crushed the ball into the left field seats in his second at-bat to make it 2-0.

Zambrano 2-hit the Reds through 4, but ran into trouble in the 5th, surrendering 5 runs, 2 on a triple from Brian Roberts. Edgardo Alfonzo then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Roberts, then Carlos Lee homered to make it 4-2. One out later, Rafael Palmeiro tripled, then scored on a single by Roberto Alomar. Jose Macias then flied out to end the inning.

In the eight with the Mets down by three, with one out, Ryan Howard hit a pinch-hit single, then one out later, Milani launched one 374 feet into the right-center field seats to make it a one-run game. Carlos Beltran and Paul Konerko hit back-to-back singles, then Matt Holiday drove in Beltran with an RBI single to tie the game at 5. The game was scoreless for the next 2 ½ innings, and in the top of the 11th, Placido Polanco led off with a single, then one out later, Toby Hall deposited a 2-2 pitch into the left field seats to make it 7-5. Matt Kinney worked a scoreless bottom of the 11th, and the Mets escaped with a win.

Greinke dominates as Mets roll

Hall hits 2nd HR

Zack Greinke went the distance, scattering eight hits with no earned runs, and the Mets provided just enough offense to sneak out a 2-1 win over the Reds. The win is New York's second straight.

The game was scoreless until the sixth, when Toby Hall hit his second homer of the year to make it 1-0. In the eighth with one away after Greinke grounded into a fielders choice, Josè Reyes hit an RBI triple that scored Greinke to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the eighth, with Carlos Lee on first, Juan Gonzalez hit a grounder to Reyes who made an errant throw to first, allowing Lee to score and Gonzalez to reach third. It was Reyes' second of the night and the third by the Mets (The other was by Jacob Milani). Josè Contreras pitches for the Mets tomorrow for the Mets. He will be facing

Contreras goes distance, Beltran saves day in win

Hall continues to swing hot bat

Jose Contreras pitched the Mets' second straight complete game, and the Mets won their third straight with a 3-1 win over Atlanta at Turner Field. Scoring was kicked off in the 3rd, when Miguel Cabrera hit a line drive homer to make it 1-0. The Mets answered in the fifth after a Matt Holliday single, when Alex Rios hit a shot to the opposite field that sneaked over the wall for a two-run bomb to give the Mets the lead. IN the top of the ninth with two outs, Carlos Beltran sent a 3-1 pitch 430 feet away from the plate to center field that provided some insurance. But the Braves weren't done. With 2 outs, after a pinch-hit single from Wayne Krukow, Kenny Lofton drove one to center field that would have tied the game. Then, Beltran defied the laws of gravity, giving it all he had to reach over the wall and snatch it back to save the win for Contreras.

Mets win it in 10

Reyes Singles in Rios in 10th

The Mets won their fourth straight, with help from some good pitching from Tomo Ohka and a clutch hit from Jose Reyes, defeating Atlanta 2-1 at Turner Field. Atlanta drew first blood in the 2nd on an RBI triple from David Eckstein. The Mets got on the board in the 4th, when Placido Polanco drilled a solo homer to right-center field to tie it up.

Not a lot of actioin came until the tenth, with 2 outs, when Alex Rios reached on an error, and manager Willie Randolph decided to let Kaz Tadano hit, because he thought if he got out, he would holfd them another inning the way he was pitching. Then, Tadano hit a bloop into right center feild that dropped for a hit in his first Major League at-bat. That brought up Reyes, who singled in Rios. Tadano was thrown out trying to get to third to end the inning, but not before Rios crossed the plate. Tadano then threw a 1-2-3 inning to get the win.
