CD Drive Problem

Recommended Posts

I was running an Instructional math CD from my CD drive when all of sudden the program froze. The program involved QuickTime and Macromedia (just the intro though). It stopped during a quicktime portion of the CD. Now my PC doesn't even read any kind of CD whatsoever Audio, DVD or data. I don't know what happened. Can somebody tell me some possible solutions to this problem. I only have one CD drive that functions as a DVD player,CD player and CDR/CDRW. Any help is greatly appreciated...

thanks for the inital advice. My main concern is that I cannot back up my files via the CDR drive and I have only 1 GB of free space. I really can't do anything. I'm paranoid also about using the Math software on another computer just in case that's the culprit. In additon, I do not want to mess with my registries just in case, it's a virus related thing where I might make the situation worse.

My PC is a second hand PC. It's probably from around 2001 to 2002. The drive still lights up but the light blinks rhythmically for about ten seconds and gives up. On my PC, when I put any disc in, the mouse cursor has the "cpu is thinking" icon until the light stops.

I just check some Information and noticed "ASPI not installed" for Sytem ASPI. Does anybody know what this means?

It seems to me -and mind you I am not an expert- but it seems to me that your computer can not locate for some reason a driver for your CD ROM drive. How this happened or why is something I can't explain.

If I am wrong on this I would hope that someone in here can correct me and guide you to the correct answer.

It sounds like the drive is dead. I suggest buying a new DVD burner. You can get a good one for less than $40.

Thanks for all your advice, people. Before I do anything, I will consult my brother when he comes back in town. He gave me the PC I'm using now and put everything together for me software and hardware wise. He's a pilot so I don't expect to see him for a month or so. But I'll just go without a CD drive until then. I am no CPU expert so I don't want to risk anything.

Windows XP does not have Aspi installed by default, as it is not essential.

So this is unlikely to be the cause of your problem

However you can install aspi by googling for "ForceASPI"

I don't think it will help though.

To be sure if it is dead or not, try booting the system from the cd drive with a bootable cd like Windows install disc or Knoppix, memtest etc etc

Or try the drive in another system...

If it recognises the cd in the bios then your problem is with Windows.

But it's 99% likely the drive is dead from the sounds of it.
