Component Video hookups

Recommended Posts

I just got a Digital Video Recorder and I hooked it up through the Component Video hookups on my TV. I was wondering if the three jacks all transfer the video, or so they also transfer sound. I have no sound at all on my TV so I have to use my stereo for sound. If they only transfer video, could someone tell me another way to get sound to my TV. Any help will be appreciated.

Quick reference:

Stereo jacks are usually red and yellow and are marked L and R (left speaker and right speaker). Component video jacks are red, green, and blue.

It's probably better to ask the folks at AVS Forum as there are people who can handle all sorts of A/V related questions.

the red, green, blue (component) cables you're refering to carry video only. there should be some type of audio output for your DVR to output into an audio input on your tv. or a digital audio out (coax or toslink) to a surround receiver (or if your tv is really high end it may have them as well).

usually the dvr will have both types of audio out- digital for dolby digital and analog (red/white, red/black) for standard stereo. it may have hdmi as well.

if you have an hdmi output on the box and the hdmi input on your tv it will carry both sound and video. hdmi carries a slightly better video signal than the component cable and carries audio as well.
