so long magic mountain?

i heard this really bad news yesterday. apprently, six flags wants to shut down magic mountain for cost cutting measures. for those who don't know, this is a legendary park, located about 30 minutes north of los angeles in the santa clartia valley, and it holds world records in coasters with 17 and is just an amazing park for thrill enthusasts. it's also the flagship park of the six flags chain and the most heavliy promoted. it is a break from the kiddy and family parks like disneyland and other parks in the rest of the area.

there is a petiton up, since yesterday and has gotten 1300 signatures, and #4 in most active petitons at petitononline.com. Save Magic Mountain

this is a travesty that this is going on, and just becuase it appeals to teens and young adults is not a reason to tear it down. it's just another sociolgical aspect that that age group shouldn't have anything fun to do becuase they are all rowdy and should appeal to children and parents and the older set. we seem to be a unfriendly socitey for the teens and young adults here.

here's the location of the park on google: location of park

Story on Closure

this will kill the six flags chain in the long term, and kill any chance for them to get back on the west coast by closing this park. it's not just a vacation spot like disneyland, it's a local place for the socal people to enjoy, and they need to realize that. don't be like disneyland, you appeal to other demographics.

I don;t think a petition can save this. The people who own Six Flags have the right to do whatever they want to their own property. It may suck for us, but they have the ultimate decision.

i know. went four times, had a blast all four times, when i was in high school, and lived in san diego.

and i'm becoming dissatifsed with corprate america. it's all about familes with small children and the rich now. what happens when those small children go into puberty? they won't like the disneyland stuff anymore and want a bit of an edge to their experince. not saying those demographics shouldn't have a fun place, but we have made an effort to exculde everyone outside of that demographic. without places like magic mountain geared to teens and young adults, they will do more dangerous stuff for fun, and nobody wants that.

and if magic mountain goes down, six flags will be gone within the decade. it's one of your best known parks. i would say that only one other park would hurt six flags more, and that's six flags over texas, the one that started the whole thing. i think magic mountain and over texas should not be torn down unless they are getting out of the theme park buisness altogether. and magic mountain is the biggest thrills park on the west coast, where roller coasters are vitrually non existant with the disney and the such. this is problay one of the worst descions of theme park history.

fred13, the petiton may not work, but it shows that people care for this park.

Personally, the Six Flags here in New England costs a fortune to get into -- so I have no problem with them dying a slow death by clearing their biggest attractions.

Ive been to both parks the one in New England and Magic Mountain in the LA area.

And i have to say Magic Mountain blows it away! They also have very afordable ticket prices that makes it easy for teens to get in. I really doubt they will do this. I say maybe in the next ten years, but they just opened up a bunch of new atractions that may save the park!

apparenly new managment doesn't like teenagers in theme parks. they think teenagers just ruin the park and everything. but i think teens and young adults need a place of their own to stay out of trouble (we have so few of them today, it's ethier things for kiddies or adults) and when we take them all away, alot of them turn to more risker activites to occupy themselves with, because we took all the safe fun away from them.

i've only been to two other, over texas and the now closed astroworld (really young though). magic mountain blew them away!! it was a really great place for us to get our fun and to spend an otherwise boring saturday.

and shutting down in the second largest market is stupid...there are 24 millon people in southern caiforna, 1/10th of the nations poplation, and millons more live not too far, about 15 millon more live in the bay area, so i say probaly 45-50 million people live within a resoable distance of this park.

problem is they want to be all disney and a vacation spot. if i wanted disney, i drive down to anahiem (which is an hour south of magic mountain btw.) la has all the kiddie parks, need to have some thrill rides. with this, these people looking for thrills wil have to travel a long way to get them. there is a roller coaster at primm, and in vegas, but it's few and far between west of the rockies.

tribe time, you're about an hour or so away from cedar point, which is magic mountain's main rival, for the east coast. how does that compare in thrill factor? i have never been to that park and want to get a gague about the parks.

For some reason I always thought that Six Flags Great America was the first in the chain.

way wrong. great america was built in 76, 15 years after six flags over texas was. over texas was 61, and ever thought about why it's called six flags? it's becuase there are six flags over the state of texas, spain, mexico, france, texas, the us and the confereate states. just a bit of a history lesson.

i thought great america was the mainstay of the chain for a while, and that six flags represented six parks.

i would say great america it closable, but over texas and magic mountain should be considred untouchable and must not close. get rid of another tiny park.

I've never been to Magic Mountain, but about Cedar Point, it is awesome if you don't mind waiting in lines. I'm spoiled because I live across the street from Geauga Lake which has virtually no lines and there are a few good rides here.

I can see Magic Mountain from my back yard, and right now it's for sale, and I think it's all developers and whatnot bidding for the land and maybe the rides, not really sure though, I heard the lowest bid was $1 million an acre, which would be $280ish million for the park I think...rediculous much?

Ceader Point is heaven for rollercoaster lovers

i've never been there, but i think many people who have been to both cp and mm say that mm is the cp of the west coast becuase of all the coasters.

it will be a shame for these people to be forced to go way to the east coast to get their thrill rides. not too many good coasters west of the rockies outside of mm.

there's this good one in primm, by the cailfiorna-nevada state border on the 15 and a couple in vegas and a few here and there on the west coast, but scatted.

the west coast needs a place like mm. the market serves 1/10th of the country in the immedate market and many millons more not too far away, and the next closest good park is a good day plus away.

Is magic mountain the one in valencia?

Ive never been, but I went to the water park next door when I lived in San diego in '02. It was awesome, and the coasters in the park next door where huge. You could see them for miles.

I hope it stays open. I love thrill rides - unfortunately my fiancee doesnt which is why we went to the water park, but thats annother story....

I hope its still there when I move back to SOCAl next year (fingers crossed for a visa)
