First Attempt at Photoshop... Suggestions?

So I finally went and got photoshop the other day and today was the first day I've had the time/motiviation to really start learning it... wasted about 6 hours on it today on various things... just trying to get the hang of it... so i made my first sig, which i plan to use over at maddenmods, since i like my sig here... keep in mind, this is my first attempt, so i dont need any "omg you suck" comments but i would appreciate constructive criticism (with general instructions on how to do more). I'm just starting to get the idea of filters, and if anyone knows how to create the effect thats on my sig now (the lines that make it look "windy") id appreciate it... here goes...

where'd you get it and how much does a guy have to drop on it? wouldn't mind having it to make some little things for myself, but i don't care enough to drop too many bones on it :D

PS...i like the sig - i think when you figure out how to do the brushy effects that it will be pretty damned sweet!

ive been learning some more today, especially with backgrounds, but still have a lot more to learn... heres an updated version... tell me what you think and suggestions to make it better..

also, nc4182, im sort of flattered, but ill try to make you one... might be a day or two tho... if your name the same over at maddenmods?

I still struggle to understand brushing backgrounds...someone on nbaliveforums.com wrote a simple tutorial on how to make a sig and he used brushes on his background to make it amazing , but when I tried it it looked like complete crap. I was using default photoshop brushes though , so maybe i'll try some of those deviantart ones out. I am not too optimistic about results , though.

Looks good , but blend the players in...click on layer and select one of the options other than normal , then as the people above said play around...you'll get some neat effects

As for stroke...I used to have the same problem you did when I was testing it out a few days ago but now I've simplified the process by putting a new blank layer on top of them all , filling it with a colour , using the rectangle marquee tool to select the whole box , then adding the stroke. The stroke is added with the fill color , then you use magic wand to delete fill color and there's your border.

alright ill try the blending idea... my gf is gonna kill me cause i havent called her yet.. but sadly im enjoying this :) could u walk me through using the magic wand to delete fill color? never used that tool before

edit: it says "could not use magic wand because target is a fill layer"

wait nc... ii think i figured it out... heres the new one...

wow man - i really like the change in that one. it might be a little too dark for my taste, but i could see some definite uses for the process in other apps. as for the arms kind of cut off, i never noticed it until you posted about it :D looks like you're learning fast!

easier way to stroke....

to stroke the sig, just make a new layer ON TOP, then hit CTRL A to select all, (youll get the marquee dotted lines going around your entire peice) then go to edit, stroke... and select how you want to stroke (inside, center, outside)...

extra....

if you want to change the distance of the stroke from the edge, after you select all, in the menu go to SELECT < MODIFY < CONTRACT and pick how many pixels you would like it to shrink.

done.

Another way to get differently shaped boarders, is once you have your project complete, or as complete as you wish, right click on the lasso tool, and select the polygonal lasso tool. While this is selected, click on any point in which there will be a corner in your design, just to make it easier, and holding down the SHIFT key, you can make 45-90 degree angles as well as straight lines. Once you have your desired border shape, go to SELECT, INVERSE to select the excess on your portrait, and hit either delete, or backspace. It matters not because they do the same thing in this project. Once you are done, you can save it, your pic, then host it on imageshack.us, and then whatever site you put it on, the "missing" excess space will be the website's background. If you look at my Sonic Sig, you'll see that I trimed the space around him.

If you need any more help on this, feel free to ask.

Check out some of these amazing brushes from a user over at DeviantArt:

I have a stickied thread with some useful Photoshop tips here:
