bravesj858
looks like 98 and me support ends tomorrow from microsoft. it lasted a good 5 years after xp came out. now with windows vista coming out next year, i wonder how long it will take for xp to be an also ran techology. will gates and company force everyone to get on vista right away, even if they don't have the computer strong enough to take it on? will everyone with an xp computer at release time (or about six months afterwards) be reduced to obscureity, or using has been techology? this has happened to the other windows os. i heard various time frames from various sources. what are your guys take on this. i say 1 year, maybe two. jhath
i sorta think they are gonna have to keep up xp support because of macs growing popularity... i think a lot of ppl are tired of windows, and the more mac shows itself as a legit, user friendly os, the more ppl will be willing to switch, which theoretically (that sure doesnt mean they will cause they usually dont give heck about us) would force microsoft to do more to keep users.... like keep up xp support, add features, lower costs, and what not... although i have heard a couple places that vista is likely microsofts last os... not sure on its accuracy tho
bravesj858
although i have heard a couple places that vista is likely microsofts last os... not sure on its accuracy tho RAM acutally said it several times on this fourm that vista will be either the last os for windows or next to last and they would start concerating on enteratiment systems like the xbox 360. i'm probaly getting a mac laptop in december instead of a windows. xp seems so cluttered, and it feels so empty when you first get it, plus the fact things will eventually phase out for xp in the next 1-2 years. bravesj858
i just got a macbook pro... running both xp and tiger... it has def replaced my desktop.. i love it... i recommend it to you... mac is surprisingly easy to use, its big downside is program compatibility i'm not so worried about program combatabity with the laptop. i just wanted a second computer, and after seeing my parents with an xp laptop with no programs instaled, it seems just like a go to the interent away from your desk machine. boring. and i don't want to spend 500 bucks trying to find the right programs. i've always wanted to make movies and websites and podcasts, but windows software requires you to buy some expensive stuff. my parents aren't so happy about my desicon to go mac. they think i'm a nerd now becuase of this and that i should rather get xp now and get windoze bloatware...err vista in a year or so becuase macs cost too much they say. i'm not fully converting and saying goodbye to windows forever, i still have my xp desktop. i just don't want the same experince with my laptop as my desktop, and going xp, i fear the laptop will just be something to go on the internet on away from home. all i seem to do on the pc is do work...need some stuff to do movies... bravesj858
i dont know why everyone is bashing microsoft...after checking out the vista website i am looking forward to its release many of us are bashing on vista becuase of the generally negative reviews the beta has gotten. also, even with two gigs of ram, it was slowing up computers. it is also considrered to be be very bloated, needing 15 gb of hard drive space to run and that only the high end computers will take up the full vista experince. google vista+bloat, and the reviews aren't really happy about this. even many of the windows fan boys aren't happy. Bama
also- i dont know why everyone is bashing microsoft...after checking out the vista website i am looking forward to its release Well, while I am looking forward to its release, I could care less if it ever came out. I know, that sentence probably didn't make sense, but it does when you think about it. My question to you NDFightingIrish, have you recently used a Mac? Or a good Linux distro? And I put used in bold because there's a difference between trying it and using it. With Mac, you get all the 'cutting-edge' features Microsoft promised they'd deliver with Vista in 2004. It's 2006, and they're not going to ship it until 2007 (maybe). When you look at it, many of the Vista features are pretty much just ripped straight off of the Mac, what happened to WinFS, the revolutionary file system that would make the current C: method obselete? Cancelled. Cancelled just like many of Vista's other features. And still, the release is 3 years late. Oh yeah, and its ******* slow. 2 GIGS OF RAM IS NOT ENOUGH TO RUN IT AT A BETTER THAN DECENT SPEED? WTF MICROSOFT? WE DON'T ALL HAVE 40,000 DOLLARS TO SPEND ON A COMPUTER WITH 16 GB OF RAM AND 4TB HDs! [rant]What pisses me off more than the delays, and cancellation of key features, is the fact that Microsoft can get away with this. If I turned in a paper 3 years late, without a thesis, i fail my ******* classes. But yet, Microsoft has such a stranglehold on the market, people tolerate Windows. I mean ****, everyday I turn on the computer, a ******* paperclip reminds me to download some more shitty updates, that way, a hacker doesn't exploit a hole in software i paid 300 bucks for that hundreds of developers and thousands of beta testers couldn't find until their computer started talking to them and showing popup gay pornography when their kids logged on.[/rant]. But on the other hand, I'm looking forward to Direct X 10. And has anyone tried Linux? The customization that can be achieved is nothing short of amazing, and with Windows, the best i can do in customizing is changing my ******* desktop wallpaper, that, and the colour of the toolbar. I guess the point I'm trying to make is, Microsoft had their chance, to be revolutionary, to get back on peoples' good sides after being on the verge of getting fucked for Anti-Trust violations. They promised something revolutionary, two years after the due date, they say 'give us one more year to make glorified XP, or Mac OS X + Linux + everything you LOVE (Sarcasm) about Windows. Oh yeah, whatever we promised about revolutionary, a translucent toolbar is as far as that goes'. But instead, we're getting screwed. We're going to pay 200 bucks+ to get the Windows XP + Mac OS X style + Google Desktop Search + Y! Widget Engine + IE7 (which no one uses) + WMP11 (free). Wow, thanks Microsoft, are you sure $199 isn't too cheap? Also, read some more reviews, from people testing it with the CTP. www.winsupersite.com . Most of the reviewers are unimpressed with Vista. I'm not a fan of Microsoft, in the least bit, so take everything i said with a grain of salt. But Bill Gates, on the other hand, with all his charity work is a man deserving of the toast that Windows shall never get.
JoeyMcM93
They better keep up support for Xp, I'm not going out an buying a new computer right away. It will take atleast a year to work all the bugs out of Vista anyway. I bet hey keep up XP support for about five years, then Vista will be it. cybernetic
From everything I've heard Vista is basically a glorified XP and it does have some new features but they're not much of an improvement over what we already have with XP

What flavor of Linux are you running? I've been running Slackware for a couple of years now. Looking to try a different flavor.Thinking about the latest SUSE. I keep windows around for games. bravesj858
i was reading something about the wga being microsoft's little kill switch, meaning that they will shut off all copies of windows xp forever after vista comes out, to force people to get vista. chances of that happening? if this is true that microsoft can cut windows xp off at any time, i'm defintley going to get a mac. Bama
Hopefully they can't do that...but they don't call Microsoft evil for no reason...
RAM
i doubt they would kill xp, from a business standpoint that would be suicide IMO. what they'll probably do is announce a phase out date for windows xp support in hopes it will force everyone to upgrade their pc's . makes no difference to me, only time i've ever called their support line (and i use that term very loosely) was for a new key when i upgraded a mobo. again take it all with a grain of salt though. i mean vista has to come out first, which i guess it will- one day. until then all we can do is speculate.
