sfgiantsflgators
Giants Get Beat Down In Split Of Two-Game Series In the second and final game of their short series with the Padres, the Giants were on the receiving end of some pent up Padre aggression. San Diego has struggled so far this season, 9-17 after yesterday's loss to the Giants. Today, however, they got a little bit of revenge against undefeated Giant starter Noah Lowry (3-0). The scoring started for San Diego in the second, getting two runs off Lowry. After scoring another in the third, San Diego opened up again in the fifth, getting two and sending Lowry to the clubhouse down 5-0. The big blow for the Giants came in the seventh when San Diego opened up for five runs, two on a Brian Giles homerun. Giles ended up with five RBI on the day and the Padres pushed on to win by the score of 12-2. Woody Williams got his third win for the Padres with 6.1 innings of scoreless work. The Padres knocked out eighteen hits today, but only four of them went for extra bases - three doubles and one homerun. Everyone but reliever Tim Stauffer hit for the Padres and only Stauffer and Vinny Castilla failed to score a run. For the Giants, Todd Greene got his second homerun of the season, starting in place of regular catcher Mike Matheny. Game 2 Boxscore League Suspensions: CWS DH Jim Thome has been suspended for six games. League Injuries: MIN RF Michael Cuddyer is day to day with a sprained right hip flexor. MIN SS Luis Rodriguez was placed on the 15 day DL with a strained ribcage.

sfgiantsflgators
Giants Lose Third Straight In 7-0 Loss The Giants drew the Brewers at the wrong time. Yesterday's Milwaukee win was their fourth straight, giving them a half game lead in the NL Central. The loss was the Giants second straight and they looked to Matt Cain to stop the trend before it turned into a streak. The Brewers good fortunes were too much though as Cain lasted five, giving up six runs on eight hits, three runs coming on a Brady Clark homerun in the third inning. Just to be sure, Brewers' starter Dave Bush went 7.1 shutout innings, allowing just three hits. The loss put Cain at 3-2 on the season. Every Brewer position player got a hit. Game 2 Boxscore League Injuries: ANA 1B Darin Erstad is day to day with a concussion. BOS SP Josh Beckett was placed on the 15 day DL with elbow tendonitis. sfgiantsflgators
Injury Bug Hits Fresno - Peterson Out 6-8 Weeks Fresno Grizzlies' starting pitcher Jeff Peterson suffered a torn MCL today and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with the injury. Three moves were made within the system to counter Peterson's absense: SP Pat Misch was called up to Fresno from AA Conneticut, SP Timothy Lincecum was called up to Conneticut from A San Jose, and minor league free agent Jay Rodriguez was signed to play at San Jose. Misch was 2-1 with a miniscule 1.80 ERA in Conneticut, having thrown 35.1 innings. He struck out 24 and walked only eight. Lincecum was 5-0 with a Misch-like 1.86 ERA in San Jose, having 29 IP under his belt. He struck out 17 while walking ten. Jay Rodriguez hasn't pitched professionally yet, being just eighteen. Scouts rave about his fastball and project him to eventually be a middle rotation starter - with ace potential not completely out of reach. sfgiantsflgators
Wolf-Bitten: Giants' Sweep Snubbed In 1-0 Loss Game two of the Giants' series in Philadelphia came with Barry Bonds looking to tie Babe Ruth for second on the all-time homerun list. The Giants sent starter Matt Morris out to face off against Jon Lieber. Neither pitcher performed well, but Lieber got the worst of it, going 6.1 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits. The big inning of the game came in the top of the seventh when the Giants erupted for seven runs, five on two homeruns: a two run shot by Randy Winn and a three run shot by Ray Durham. The Phillies would answer with three in the bottom of the seventh but fell short in the game 8-7. Jeremy Accardo improved to 3-0 depsite 0.2 innings of work in which he allowed three runs. Armando Benitez got his ninth save of the season. With a series win wrapped up, the Giants were looking for the sweep. Noah Lowry looked to give his team just that but couldn't match a great performance by Philly starter Randy Wolf. Wolf went the distance, getting a complete game shutout while allowing just five hits and striking out six. Lowry went 7.1 allowing just one run on a solo shot by Pat Burrell, his fourth of the season. The loss put Lowry at 3-2 on the season while Wolf improved to 4-1. Bonds remains at 713 career homeruns as the Giants head home to San Francisco to face the Cubs. Mark Prior is scheduled to start against the Giants in the first game of the series. Bonds has faced Prior twice but walked both times. Game 2 Boxscore Game 3 Boxscore League Injuries: OAK SP Brad Halsey is day to day with a concussion. COL RF Brad Hawpe is day to day with an inflamed left elbow. ATL SP John Smoltz will miss his next start with an ACL sprain but is not expected to be placed on the DL. sfgiantsflgators
More Injuries On The Farm - Sanchez, Kinney Go Down The Giants got more bad news today regarding their farm system as Conneticut Defender starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez and Fresno Grizzly starting pitcher Matt Kinney both went down with injuries. Sanchez suffered a fractured hand and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Kinney also suffered a fracture, this one on his right knee and is also expected to be out for 4-6 weeks. Craig Whitaker was called up to Conneticut from Single-A San Jose. Whitaker was 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 36.2 innings at San Jose. He struck out 31 and walked nine. Chris Begg was called to Fresno from Conneticut after posting a 2-2 record with a 2.75 ERA in 39.1 innings. He struck out 33 and walked seven. Two free agents were also signed. 26-year old Tim Drew, who was placed in the Defender starting rotation; and 17-year old Jeff King, who has yet to play professionally. Drew could work his way up the ranks quickly. He features five quality pitches, the best of which is his four-seamer. His control is the main concern but if he is able to begin hitting his spots, his future with the Giants could become long-term. King will start in San Jose and will be moved along slowly, as he is only 17. He features a plus fastball and changeup. The Giants will probably leave him in San Jose for the remainder of this year and if he does well, could move him to Conneticut at the start of next season. sfgiantsflgators
Giants Sweep Cubs - Head Into Dodger Series Hot Game two of the Giants and Cubs series in San Francisco saw a matchup of young versus...veteran. The Cubs' Greg Maddux (1-3) has had a great career but insists he still has enough left in the tank. Giants' rookie Matt Cain had a good end to 2005 and continues to impress in 2006. On this particular day, youth prevailed. Cain was great, going eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Maddux allowed four runs in five innings, two on a Lance Niekro homerun in the third inning. Armando Benitez pitched the ninth to get his eleventh save of the season. Cain improved to 4-2. The sweep was on the line as two fireballers squared off - Jason Schmidt and Kerry Wood. Schmidt lasted six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out seven. He would leave the game trailing as Wood threw the first seven innings with only one run surrendered. However, the Giants were able to get two in the bottom of the eighth, taking Schmidt off the hook and placing Wood on the line for the loss. Brian Wilson pitched two scoreless innings before handing the ball off to Benitez, who allowed one hit in the ninth before shutting the Cubs down and earning his twelfth save. Wilson got the win, putting him at 1-1 on the season. Barry Bonds failed to hit a homerun in the series after narrowly missing in the first game, and remains one behind the Babe for second on the all-time list. He now has three games at home against the rival Dodgers. Derek Lowe is scheduled to start game one of the series - Bonds is hitless against Lowe in six career at-bats. Game 2 Boxscore Game 3 Boxscore League Injuries: CWS 2B Tadahito Iguchi suffered a fractured right knee and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. NYM SS Jose Reyes suffered a fractured right knee and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.
